Extended Summary

At the Diner, Irene and Willow are discussing the arrangements for Jai’s birthday. Amber comes in just as Willow is suggesting she’s spoiling it for Dean. She says that she and Dean have sorted things: Karen’s still not coming but Dean understands why. Irene tries to defuse things but Amber leaves. Willow and Irene discuss getting a cake for Jai and Irene remembers he liked chocolate when he was last there, offering to sort out a corner with decorations. She tries to advise Willow against coming between Amber and Dean but Willow says she’s not going to let Dean be walked over. She goes up to the flat where Dean is putting the finishing touches on the bike and recalls him having one the same colour. He admits he’s not really fine with Karen not being there but it’s not the day for arguing. He mentions he nearly told Karen earlier but wonders if Amber’s right about not pushing it.

Christian runs into Tori looking tired at the hospital and she explains Grace kept her up. Leah appears and asks Tori for a coffee since they didn’t get to talk that morning. Christian sees them off then goes to the cubicle where Justin is waiting; he knows they’re keeping his presence secret from Tori. Justin is worried she’ll blame herself for not having all the tumour removed. He says he’s got numbness in his feet and back pains again. Christian decides to order a CT. Later, Leah and Tori return from their coffee. Leah has been asking Tori about taking Justin away when he’s recovered. Leah looks uncomfortable when Tori suggests getting Ava to visit but tries to keep the conversation going by saying Tori will have the house to herself and asking about her and Christian. Tori insists they’re not a thing. She gets a page about an emergency and Leah texts Justin to warn him Tori’s on her way.

Dean has covered the bike in wrapping paper and Willow is struggling to keep a straight face. He eventually asks her to take over. Willow indicates how impressed she is with him as a father. She tells him to wrap the helmet and begins tearing the paper off. Later, Amber and Jai are near the beach when Dean and Willow appear with the bike, which now simply has a large bow on it. Jai is delighted. Amber tries to tell Dean something but then her mother Francesca appears and comments that she hopes Dean paid for the bike. While Willow keeps Jai busy with her present, Dean stiffly greets Francesca, who tells him that if she’d had her way he’d have played no part in Jai’s life.

Christian is reassuring Justin when he also gets a page. He bumps into Tori as he exits the cubicle and she explains the patient fell off a ladder and hit his head. Leah slips past them to join Justin, who explains he’s being sent to Radiology for a scan. Later, Leah is chatting to Christian about it. Tori comes past with a patient and wonders why Leah’s still there. She claims she was going to ask Tori to lunch. Christian says he’s going to Radiology and will take the patient there. He suggests he’s trying to impress Tori but she points out he was going anyway. As Tori watches him walk away, Leah checks that there’s no thing.

Francesca points out Jai can’t ride the bike without training wheels. Dean says they’re in the car because he didn’t know if Jai needed them. Willow quietly criticises Amber for bringing Francesca. Amber says she only came because she heard Dean wanted to invite Karen but points out Francesca’s always been in Jai’s life. Francesca joins them and Willow accuses her of messing up Jai’s birthday. Francesca retorts that they’re to blame for her son’s death and that Dean slept with Amber to get over Willow. Amber goes to join Dean and Jai. Later, John turns up and Amber explains he was her patient. Francesca introduces herself and John comments he knew a Franny at school who could arm wrestle any of the boys. She firmly maintains she’s Francesca. John asks about Karen. Francesca tries to say she’s no-one but Dean tells Jai she’s his other grandma and he might meet her one day. Dean and Amber go off with Jai on his bike while John and Willow make for the food.

Christian is looking at the scan. He hastily puts it away as Tori approaches and tells her their patient didn’t have a bleed so is being kept in for observation. After Tori’s gone to a ward to check on him, Christian takes Justin and Leah into the office. He confirms the tumour’s back. Justin notes operating didn’t help before. Christian asks them to let him talk with his team and come up with a plan of action. Later, Christian tries to chat to Tori about getting something to eat. She notices Justin and Leah leaving in the lift and tries to talk to Christian about it but he quickly leaves.

Amber takes photos of Jai on the bike while Dean and Willow chat about Francesca; Dean recalls her turning a hose on him once because she didn’t want him around Jai or Amber. Willow suggests they go to the Diner for the rest of the party. Francesca tries to say they have to go but Amber agrees. After the others have moved on, Dean tells Francesca not to put him down in front of his kid again. Later, at the Diner, Dean, Willow, Amber, Francesca and Irene all sing happy birthday to Jai. Irene asks about his presents and he says he got a trampoline, some toy cars and a bike. Irene notes she thought he’d have a surf board and Jai says Francesca told him boys who surf are trouble. There’s an awkward moment before Irene suggests they cut the cake.

Leah and Justin walk through a park. Leah wonders if they should tell Tori what’s going on. Justin is still worried about her blaming herself and wants to wait until they know what the plan is. At the hospital, Tori again accosts Christian. He points out he can’t discuss a patient with her. Tori knows Justin didn’t have an appointment, meaning it must be something serious, and says she needs to know he’s going to be all right.

Irene gives Jai the rest of the cake and he thanks her for the party. Willow takes a photo of Dean, Amber and Jai together. Dean jokes about Jai “hooning” on the bike but Francesca insists there’ll be none of that. Dean asks to talk to Amber and Francesca takes Jai home. Dean takes Amber up to the flat balcony. She says Francesca was only supposed to be dropping Jai off. Dean asks how often she looks after Jai and Amber says she looks after him after school, while she’s working and at weekends sometimes. Dean isn’t happy about what she might be saying to Jai and also that she gets to see him and Karen doesn’t. He wants them to meet but Amber continues to refuse point blank, saying her mum isn’t a psycho like Karen, and if Dean can’t accept it then he won’t see Jai either.
