Extended Summary
Brody is in a fraught state first thing, bemusing Justin and Mason who were expecting him to make breakfast. He says he has to set up for a uni night at Salt. Justin in particular is concerned that uni students don’t actually have any money but Brody thinks it’s about keeping things fresh. They agree to come round later to help set up and Mason throws Brody his keys as he leaves. Meanwhile, Alf sees Leah looking after Luc and offers to help out but she claims she’s fine. VJ turns up and also has an offer of help turned down. He says he’s feeling better after a night’s sleep and had happy memories of Billie while out surfing. Leah tells him to hold on to the feeling.
Marilyn turns up at the Diner in a state, telling Irene about John saying he’s leaving her. She explains about him thinking everyone hates him and says he slept in Jett’s room and refused to come out this morning. Irene agree he’s not a monster and tell Marilyn to go home and wait, since John’s bound to come out at some point. In fact, John is emerging from his room as Marilyn arrives home but hasn’t changed his mind. He says he’ll move out to a motel until the trial, after which he expects to be in jail. Marilyn insists they need to look after each other and says she hasn’t given up on him.
Justin and Mason go into the Diner. Lena is sat at a table and waves to Mason, who explains to Justin he knows her from uni. Justin encourages him to talk to her; Mason is uncertain, since he’s just broken up with Olivia, but Justin asks what’s the worst that can happen. Mason approaches Lena who says she was about to talk to him. After a few uncomfortable moments, she suggests he walk her to her car. She explains she was at a party last night. Mason mentions the event at Salt, which she was already planning to go to, and they arrange to meet there. Lena yawns but says she’ll catch up on some sleep and then take something. Mason is uncomfortable as she offers to get him something too.
John insists to Marilyn that his mind is made up. Alf turns up, having heard from Irene, and adds his voice to Marilyn’s, saying John isn’t doing what’s right for her. John, however, can’t get past the fact he killed someone. At the Diner, Leah turns up with Luc and apologises to Irene for being late. Irene is happy to have Luc there and suggests wrapping her tighter might help her sleep. Leah, not exactly welcoming the advice, says she’ll mention it to VJ and pointedly says the day sleep didn’t help. Irene offers to take Luc overnight some time and Leah ends up snapping that they’ll ask if they need help.
Justin and Mason join Brody at Salt for the setting up. Justin wonders why Mason suddenly seems to have gone off Lena. Mason says he’s still meeting her tonight but it’s not a long term thing. At the caravan park house, VJ is looking after Luc while Leah makes a big sandwich. Leah sarcastically suggests Irene could do a better job. After getting the story out of her, VJ points out Leah’s acting how he was before and says she and Irene are both Luc’s grandmas. Leah goes to see Irene at the Diner and apologises, saying they’ve both got a role to play. Irene again raises the question of having Luc. Leah says it’s up to VJ.
Brody is looking morose behind the bar in Salt despite it being full of students. Lena gets a bit frisky with Mason but he pulls away, saying he’s not into the same sort of stuff as her and they should just be friends. Brody tells Justin no-one’s ordered anything but water and chips. Justin reminds him of what he said about penniless students and leaves. Brody sees Lena giving one of the other patrons drugs and drags Mason into the back room. Mason tries to suggest she’s only giving them to friends, not dealing. Brody wants her out and is worried about the police. Mason insists he’s not okay with it but thinks if Brody makes a scene he’ll scare away his new customers.
Marilyn is sitting alone in the Diner’s veranda. VJ enters with Luc in her carry cot and, after a moment’s hesitation, joins her. Marilyn is pleased to see Luc but tells him Leah doesn’t want them talking. VJ thanks her for the letter she wrote after Billie’s death. Marilyn says she wishes she’d known the truth then. VJ asks after John and Marilyn says he’s going to leave her and she doesn’t know what to do. VJ offers to speak to him. Back at the house, John is packing and takes a photo of himself, Marilyn and Jett off the fridge. Marilyn and VJ turn up. John is uncertain how to talk to VJ but VJ says he’s doing okay. He says he’s heard about the brain tumour and that John is leaving. John says he thinks it’s for the best but VJ tells him not to. He recalls spending time there with Jett and John being like a second dad to him, before saying he forgives him. Overwhelmed, John asks how. VJ says he knows it was an accident and John would never hurt anyone deliberately. He asks him to hold Luc. Taking her, John tearfully says he’s sorry.
VJ arrives home. Alf and Leah note he’s been a while and he explains he went to see John. Alf hopes he wasn’t too hard on him. VJ says he forgave him: He’s not 100% comfortable with it but it’s a relief to let go of the anger. Leah says Billie would be proud. Back at Salt, a wired Lena flirts with Mason again. Brody says he’s shutting the event down. Lena gives him her credit card and says to set up a tab at the bar. She also offers him drugs. Brody isn’t interested so she changes tactics, saying if he turns a blind eye they’ll make it worth his while.
