Ruby has a massive health scare. Miles nearly has a car accident and the culprit surprises everyone. Aden acts in haste and has to eat humble pie.
Extended Summary
Ruby is slowly coming to terms with being a diabetic, but while she’s getting used to the treatment regime, she’s not keen on most people knowing that she has the condition as she thinks they will define her by it. Forced into pulling an all-nighter to finish an assignment for Miles, she absentmindedly prints out the wrong draft of it and takes that to school. Fortunately she realises her mistake as she’s handing the essay in, and Miles lets her go home at lunchtime to print out the final version. Ruby’s pleased when she just makes the deadline, but her lack of sleep, and skipping lunch sees her go into hypoglycaemia and she begins staggering and slurring her speech like a drunk. When kids start laughing at her, Miles comes to her rescue. He gets a sugar hit into her and then takes her off to hospital. All is well, but it’s a wake-up call for Ruby. Geoff’s there to offer her the support she needs and Ruby realises she just has to get over her fear of people knowing that she has a medical condition.
Leah has been trying to ease Miles out of the funk he still feels after Kirsty left him, but Miles hasn’t been very receptive. Leah has to ease up with her efforts with him, as VJ increasingly becomes a handful. Leah’s concerned about the boy when he appears to feign illness to get out of school. He doesn’t seem to like school any more. Things come to a head when Miles is driving Ruby home from the hospital. Slowing up at a pedestrian crossing, a kid throws a water bomb at the car causing Miles to swerve dangerously. The kid takes off and Miles gives chase, but he’s no match for a kid with a head start. When at the diner chatting to Leah, Miles sees VJ entering and recognises something on the boy’s bag that causes Miles to suspect him of the water bombing. Leah’s horrified when on closer inspection it’s clear that VJ has thrown the water bomb.
Aden is less than impressed at now having to share his home with Liam, but it’s Nicole’s place and it was her call. From the first day, Aden and Liam rub each other up the wrong way. Aden thinks Liam’s a slob and while Liam tries a little harder to get along with Aden, it’s more for Nicole’s sake than anything else. When Liam starts to give music lessons from home, Aden tells Nicole that she has to stop them, and it’s the last straw for Aden when she refuses. In a weak moment Aden tells Nicole she can stick her apartment, he’ll move out. His timing’s bad, as he finds out later that day that the Council have voted to cancel two berths at the marina, and one of them is for Irene’s trawler. Aden’s job is destined to go with the lost berth, and he’s forced to eat humble pie and ask Nicole if he can stay on in the apartment, at mates’ rates, as he’s shortly going to be left unemployed.
