Is Ash’s brother Luke still alive? VJ struggles to look after Luc by himself. Will Summer Bay forgive John, and will he be able to forgive himself?
Extended Summary
Kat tracks down Ash on the beach and asks where he’s been, since he just took off. Ash says he needed to clear his head but refuses to believe Luke is alive. Kat reiterates that there’s no death certificate and points out Ash was in jail at the time. Ash says Luke fell off a bridge while drunk and drowned, and he’s visited his grave. After getting the date, Kat rings Murray and asks him to send the police report. Meanwhile, Alf goes to see John but the latter isn’t interested in either his smuggled in chocolates or a game of cards and feels he should be in jail. Alf says John isn’t responsible and points out Billie died of terminal cancer but John says he hastened her death. He asks about VJ and Alf says he’s getting comfort from Luc, also claiming Leah and Ash are getting on with things when John asks. John worries about Marilyn.
Marilyn adjusts her glove at home before sitting down with a cup of tea. She picks up her tablet and is shocked to find a headline saying “BAIL GRANTED FOR FIRE BUG – LOCALS OUTRAGED”. Marilyn heads to the Diner where Irene claims she’s only just seen the article, despite several newspapers with it on the front page being dotted around. Marilyn worries that everyone’s looking at her. Irene initially claims no-one’s said anything before admitting a couple of gossip mongers have. Marilyn says the article says everyone hates John. Irene says it was a shock. Marilyn wants to see Leah and VJ but Irene tells her not to, thinking it’s not the right time.
Nevertheless, Marilyn goes round to the house and encounters Leah on the patio. Marilyn says she’s sorry about what’s happened. Leah accepts it, assuring her they’re still friends and asking how she is, but her answers are very flat. When Marilyn asks to see VJ, Leah refuses to let her and Marilyn leaves. Leah finds VJ and Luc asleep inside, with the newspaper in front of them. She tries to take Luc but only manages to wake them both up. She tells VJ about Marilyn’s visit and VJ says she didn’t have to send her away. Leah tries to take Luc for a bath but VJ irritably insists on doing it himself, thinking he isn’t pulling his weight since he’s accepted Irene and Ash’s offer and leaves Luc with her during the day.
Next morning, Kat tells Ash she needs a strong coffee, having been kept awake by his tossing and turning. Ash gets a phone call from a number that he’s been getting a lot of recently but when he answers it no-one speaks. Kat gets an e-mail through with the report on Luke: It says he fell off the bridge during a fight but the search was called off after two days. When she sees a photo that Ash confirms is Luke, she realises it’s the man she saw at Billie’s funeral. She suggests a fake death certificate may have been used for Luke’s funeral. Ash still insists Luke wouldn’t do it so Kat wonders if someone else could have faked his death. Ash gets another of the silent phone calls. Kat tells him to ring the number back and they hear the voicemail of Patrick Stanwood. Ash has never heard of Patrick…but the voice is Luke’s.
VJ rocks Luc before putting her down in her crib, but as soon as he does she starts crying. VJ picks her up but seems on the verge of losing his temper. Leah comes in and tries to take over but VJ refuses to let her. Leah eventually agrees to go to work and tells VJ to call her if he needs help: He bluntly says he won’t. At the Diner, Leah shares the information with Irene, worrying about VJ wanting to do everything himself. Irene wonders if he’s still okay with her and Ash having Luc and Leah doesn’t know. Irene mentions stopping Marilyn coming round and Leah reveals she came anyway, explaining she stopped her seeing VJ because she wasn’t sure how he’d react. She admits she and VJ haven’t talked about John since he found out. Irene suggests it’s not a good idea to keep things bottled up.
Kat tells Ash she’s got Murray to look up Patrick’s mobile number and has got an address. They head to an ordinary suburban house which Kat explains is a rental. Ash is starting to convince himself that it wasn’t really Luke’s voice he heard and that someone must be playing a trick. They knock on the door but get no response. Trying the back door doesn’t go any better. Kat suggests they go away but Ash refuses to leave without answers and, to her shock, kicks the door open.
Alf goes to pick up Marilyn; they are going to the hospital for John’s results. Marilyn has got up early to do her hair and make-up but is fretting about her outfit. Alf assures her John won’t care. Marilyn wants John to feel that he has support. They head to the hospital where John tells them the tumour’s benign and he’s being discharged that morning. Alf has to leave to take a phone call. John asks Marilyn how she and everyone else are. Marilyn insists she’s getting better and says no-one blames John.
VJ puts Luc down in her crib and sits down, trying to rest himself. However, mere moments later Luc starts crying again and VJ goes back to her. At the hospital, Marilyn is gushing about John going home. Alf comes in and admits the phone call was from Todd Billwood at the surf club. Marilyn tries to change the subject but John says he’s seen the paper and knows things aren’t how she’s saying. Alf admits the board are insisting John resigns. Marilyn tries to claim it doesn’t matter since John isn’t well enough to do his duties anyway. John says it does matter.
Ash is searching the rental house. Kat is reluctant to take part, since it’s breaking and entering, and her being police doesn’t help since she’s off duty and doesn’t have a warrant. Ash is determined to find out who lives there, unaware someone is watching the house from outside. Meanwhile, VJ brings Luc downstairs, having got her a bottle. He protests that he’s changed and burped her. Putting her down in the crib doesn’t seem to make her settle and VJ gets increasingly stressed, holding onto the crib and raising his voice. Alf arrives and asks what’s going on. He takes over at the crib as VJ sits down, looking shattered.
Ash and Kat are leaving the rental house: There didn’t seem to be any personal items. Patrick suddenly steps from the trees and calls Ash Marty. Ash recognises him as Luke. Patrick notes Ash must have a lot of questions but Ash simply punches him before hurrying back to the car. Kat gets in with him and they drive off as Patrick watches.
