Extended Summary

Alf is leaving the surf club when he gets a call from Marilyn telling him about John’s collapse. At the house, an ambulance officer is looking after John, who has come round and is asking what’s going on. Kat arrives but doesn’t tell them why she’s there, instead asking about John. Marilyn goes in the ambulance. As they arrive at the hospital, the ambulance officer gives Nate the details. Nate says to take him to the treatment room and tells Marilyn he’ll let her know.

VJ tells Leah that he’s put Luc down. Leah thinks he should get some rest as well but VJ thinks Luc will be awake again soon. Ash turns up and VJ is infuriated at him appearing when all the arrangements have been made. He tells him that Billie’s being cremated and her ashes will be scattered on the beach tomorrow. Ash objects and Leah tries to get them to talk calmly. They sit around the table but Ash wants Billie buried next to Luke and VJ wants to fulfill Billie’s wishes. Leah tries to calm things but things get heated and Ash tells VJ Billie would still be alive if he hadn’t taken her out of hospital. Leah tells him to go away and calm down.

Nate is looking after John, who recalls going home for lunch and says he was dizzy and nauseous and had a headache all day which got worse at lunch. Nate says they need to do further tests. John wonders if it’s connected with him fainting last year. In the corridor, Alf joins Marilyn who tells him John’s with the doctors. Nate appears and tells them John’s okay for the moment. Kat also arrives, saying she was wondering about John. Alf offers to update her but she says she’ll wait. He asks if she’s any closer to catching the arsonist and she says they’re very close.

Justin and Phoebe are waiting at the Diner. Phoebe wonders if Nina will bring Ava and again offers to stay with him but Justin thinks it’s best it’s just the two of them. Phoebe leaves and Nina immediately turns up. Justin thanks her for coming. They head outside where Nina makes it clear she’s not there to negotiate. She says that after he convinced her before, she had to tell Brian and Ava about him, meaning Ava found out Brian wasn’t her dad. Ava wanted to see him but he never showed up, and Nina isn’t giving him another chance to break her heart. As she walks back to her car, Justin follows and eventually says he was in hospital, explaining Tori was kidnapped and he was stabbed helping her. He insists it’s completely over now but Nina asks what would have happened if Ava had been there and if he can guarantee she’d be safe with him.

Marilyn joins John in his hospital room. He apologises for scaring her. Marilyn tries to dismiss it but John admits he’s been having weird headaches for a while and hoped they’d go away. Marilyn says he’s in the right place to get help now. In the corridor, Alf fills Leah in before she asks Nate for a favour about Billie. At the farm house, Phoebe tells Justin Nina’s being unreasonable but Justin thinks she’s just trying to protect Ava and he can’t guarantee her safety. He says Ava has a dad and it’s not him. Phoebe argues her life would be richer with him in it and urges him not to give up.

Ash meets Nate on the beach, with Nate having told him it’s about Billie. Nate says Leah spoke to him. Ash insists Billie’s not being cremated but Nate says it’s not about that, it’s about him blaming VJ. Ash reminds Nate he said Billie would have days but Nate says he simply said she could have and taking her out of hospital made no difference: There was nothing they could have done. Ash nearly walks away but Nate stresses that if he’s looking for someone to blame, it’s not VJ. He gets a text saying he needs to come into work and tells Ash to call him if he needs anything.

Marilyn is fussing over John when Nate arrives with the MRI results. He says John has a tumour on the frontal lobe of the brain: They won’t know if it’s benign or malignant until they remove it and do a biopsy, and it wasn’t found before because it didn’t show up on CT scans. He says there are treatment options but no firm prognosis. In the corridor, Kat asks Alf about John and he says no visitors are allowed except Marilyn. Nate joins them and says John asked him to tell Alf about the brain tumour. Kat asks if it could cause John to act out of character and Nate says it could, along with blackouts and memory loss. Alf picks up on the questioning.

VJ is settling Luc but Leah takes her away when Ash comes back. Ash says he was wrong about Billie. VJ isn’t in a forgiving mood but Ash stresses that he knows all VJ did was make sure she didn’t die cooped up in hospital and is doing what she wants. VJ says he’s going to say something before they scatter the ashes and suggests Ash says something too, maybe about before the rest of them knew her. Ash says there is something. VJ says Billie wanted them both to step up with Luc. At the Morgan house, Justin is viewing the video of Ava. Phoebe turns up with a Chinese and Justin shows her the clip but says Ava’s grown up since then and he’s missed it. He says he has to let her go.

Alf approaches Kat near the surf club and asks her about the arson investigation. Kat tries to be vague but Alf comments that John had access to the petrol. Kat tells him to leave it but Alf persists so Kat admits she thinks John did it. Alf dismisses her arguments until she tells him about the fingerprints. Alf is horrified, realising that means John hurt Marilyn and Billie. He heads home where Leah asks about John. Alf tells her about the tumour and Marilyn being beside herself, before saying the town might not support them this time. Despite acknowledging he was told to keep quiet, he says that John lit the fires. VJ enters in time to overhear and is shocked.
