He had been sitting there in silence for 5 minutes. “Why didn’t you tell you?” “I’ve told you now though haven’t I?” “How long have you known?” “Does it matter?” “Of course it matters. How long?” “A while” “A while? And didn’t you think you should have told me straight away?” “Yes. I’m sorry Roman. I just didn’t know how to tell you. And I didn’t want to ruin everything” “I’m sorry Roman” “Martha, you shouldn’t be saying sorry. I should. You felt you couldn’t even tell me. What does that say about me?” “No, look Roman; it’s nothing to do with you. I just guess I didn’t want to say anything. It would have made it seem so much more real” OK so she lied. But she couldn’t say it was about Jack. “Martha, I’m going to be here for you all the way. You will get through this” “I hope so” “You will. You’re strong Martha. We will get through this together” “I love you so much Martha” “I love you too” They both burst into tears and hugged. Martha finally realized she had to let go of Jack and she really did love Roman. Angelo heard someone coming up the path towards the house. This better be Charlie he thought. He jumped off his seat and rushed to the door. “Charlie, where the hell have you been all night?” “No where” “Charlie, do you not care how worried I have been?” “Angelo do you not care how it makes me feel to be accused of cheating when I was..” She couldn’t say the word. “Of course I do. I am so sorry. Why didn’t you tell me?” “Because as soon as I got home you accused me of cheating. Just like you always do when I say I’m going to a friends” “Who was it?” “I don’t know” “OK well let’s go down to the station and report this now” “No, Angelo, there’s no point. I didn’t see his face and I have no idea who it was” “The person who did this is not going to get away with this!” “Angelo! Calm down” “Calm down? No I won’t bloody calm down! You were raped and you expect me to act normal” “No I expect you to ask how I am which you haven’t yet” She was right. What was he thinking? The last thing she needs right now is him going off on one. “I’m sorry. I just don’t want to see the person get away with hurting you like that” “OK. But please don’t ask me to report this. I can’t go through with that” “But...” “Please” “OK. I won’t. And I’m so sorry for not believing you when you said you wasn’t with another man” “Anyway, I have to go to work now” Do you think that’s a good idea? Why don’t you stay at home? You’ve been through this traumatizing ordeal” Charlie walked over to Angelo and kissed him. “I’ll be fine” she left the house thinking to herself how she didn’t want to go to work. She just didn’t want to be around Angelo. *2 weeks later* “Morning gorgeous” “Morning” “Do you want a cuppa?” “Please. Why are all smiley?” “Cause I have a surprise for you” Roman had a big smile on his face. “Ooh, what is it?” “You’ll find out tonight” “Roman, tell me now. You know I can’t stand surprises” “You’re going to love this one. I hope” “So when will I find out?” “Tonight. I have to sort it out when I finish work, and then as soon as I get home I’ll tell you what it is” “Roman…” “My lips are sealed” He passed Martha the cup of tea and kissed her quickly. “I have to go. I’ll see you later” “Bye” Everything had been great these past two weeks. He and Martha were happier than ever. Even though the cancer had returned, they were going to get through it together. And tonight was going to be so special. “You look happy” Irene had just walked in the kitchen and placed the empty plates in the sink “I am happy” “Anything to do with the surprise you have planned for Martha?” “How do you know about that?” “I’ve saw her on the beach this morning. She was getting really frustrated trying to think what it could be” Roman laughed. “Well then, I hope it’s worth the wait” “So, are you going to tell me what it is?” “Wow that’s fantastic darl” “I know. I can’t wait” “You and Martha are great together” Roman smiled, thinking about tonight. There was a knock at the door. “Hey, is it alright if we come in?” “Course” Rachel and Hugo and little Natasha came in. “How are you all?” “Good thanks” Hugo said putting Natasha down. “Tash why don’t you go play with Jack and Brooke” “Jack’s not here. He’s at a friends. But Brooke’s in the garden. Why don’t you go out and play with her” “So how are you Martha? “I’m alright thanks. What about you two? You look happier from the last time I saw you” “We’re good thanks. Everything has been really great lately” “Aw that’s great guys” Martha couldn’t help noticing the look of doubt in Rachel’s eyes though. “There’s something I need to tell you. I don’t want you to worry though” “What is it Martha?” Rachel couldn’t help but worry. “The cancer. It’s returned. “Oh my god. When did you find out?” “A while ago” “And how are you feeling Martha?” “I’m alright” She saw that they weren’t too sure that was the truth. “Really. I am. Roman’s been great and they caught it early” “That’s good. Have you started your treatment yet?” “No not yet. I start it next week” “You know we’re always here for you Martha” “Thanks Rach. I know” Roman came in the door with a big bunch of flowers. Martha jumped up and gave her boyfriend a kiss. “Aw they’re beautiful Roman. Is this my surprise?” “No” “What is it then?” Roman looked over at the others. “I’ll tell you when we’re alone” “Mate, its ok. We don’t mind” Hugo laughed. “Roman, what is it? I have been waiting all day for it” “This isn’t how I planned it but ok. Martha I love you so much. Ever since I met you. And even when we were apart, I never stopped loving you. Not really” “Aw” Rachel thought it was so sweet. “Alright let me finished” he laughed. “I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Me, you, Jack and Brooke. You’re everything I need and want” He put his hand in his pocket and pulled out a red, small box. “Martha, will you marry me?” “Oh my god. Yes!” Martha kissed her fiancée and he kissed her back. “That’s great guys” Rachel hugged them both and Hugo shook Roman’s hand. “Congratulations” “Thanks guys” “OK we’ll leave you to get on with celebrating then. See ya. “Bye” As they left, they kissed again. “I love you Martha” I love you too” Hugo thinks everything is great. But what happens when he finds out the truth?
