First seen in the pilot episode, Carly appeared at first glance to be a typical teenage girl, leading foster sister Lynn into a series of escapades, desperately trying to get the attention of the local surfers and moaning when things didn't go her way. She took an instant dislike to Bobby but grudgingly came to accept her inclusion as part of the family. Carly has a vivacious personality, a quick mind and a distinct tendency to stretch the truth.
She grew up adoring her mother and hating her father. Her father owned and ran a very successful advertising agency. Her constant defiance of his authority infuriated him to the point where he started beating her. When neighbours noticed the bruises, her mother lied that they were caused from falls.
Carly's mother has died, but beating continued. Continuous beating left her with a fractured skull; as a result, the authorities were brought in.
Carly was taken away from her father, despite the efforts of his lawyers to stop the move. She was fostered to the Fletchers.
Carly has adjusted well to living with Tom and Pippa. For the first time in her life, her qualities are recognised and praised and it's like heaven to live in a family where the rights of the individual are respected. The scars are still there but she was enjoying lift too much to dwell on them.
In 1988, she suffered an incident: she was raped. She did not reveal the truth until later. Her attempts to cover it up were fruitless.
When she attended Summer Bay High, she later had a crush on one of its teachers: Andrew Foley. She was hurt when she overheard him telling his partner of Carly having a crush on him and laughing about it.
In 1991, Ben arrived in the Bay and Carly was attracted to him. After numerous problems with the wedding arrangements, they got married.
They did not have a smooth marriage when they squabbled over an old house which Carly refused to live in. They eventually sorted their differences and moved in.
Carly and Ben had no longer been in the Bay. Around 1997, Carly returned briefly to see the family. In 2000, she returned again for Sally's wedding which did not finish.
Carly was one of the original characters in Home and Away.
