Extended Summary

Tane joins Ziggy in the farm house kitchen. She notes she thought he’d never wake and he replies that he didn’t sleep much on the sofa and then someone tired him out. He finds he has four missed calls from Ari. Ringing him, he asks about Nikau, then becomes serious. Soon after, Ziggy turns up at the Diner flat and tells Bella that Nikau’s in hospital and she and Tane are taking Chloe down there. Bella immediately agrees to go with them.

Nikau is prepared for surgery by theatre staff. Christian enters and the anaesthetist says they’re ready for him. A nurse, Jamie, pops her head round the door and asks Christian what he wants done with his jacket. Christian says to hang it up and adds that there’s something precious in the pocket. Meanwhile, Tane, Ziggy, Chloe and Bella pile out of the lift. Mackenzie and Ari greet them and Mackenzie tells Bella she was going to call her about something else. Tori appears and gives them an update on Nikau’s surgery. She takes Mackenzie aside and Mackenzie tells Bella to come too. Ari tells the others that Mia lost the baby. Ziggy hears Tori telling Mackenzie and Bella that Dean has a fractured pelvis and internal bleeding; Mackenzie explains that he and Mia went to get Nik. Logan arrives with Dean; Tori tries to take over but Logan keeps giving instructions, saying they can’t wait for imaging and need to remove the balloon blocking the aorta to restore the blood supply. Tori reluctantly agrees.

Leah and Justin are waiting on the pier and wonder where Tori and Christian have got to. Back at the hospital, Christian is still operating when Jamie appears and says Justin’s on the phone. Christian tells her to put it on speaker and explains that he and Tori were called in for a serious car crash and will be there more of the night, telling Justin to pack it up. Justin explains to Leah, who laments that it will all go to waste. Justin suggests that it doesn’t have to, picking up the bottle of champagne.

Freya reports to Tori that theatre’s ready for Dean. However, Logan insists he’s too unstable to move and they need to pack the pelvis. Tori protests that he needs to be in theatre, but reluctantly backs down when Logan asks if she wants to be responsible for Dean not making it. Ziggy, Bella and Mackenzie are all waiting outside as Tori appears and gives an update. Bella wonders why she isn’t with Dean. Tori grudgingly says the doctor with him knows what he’s doing. Tane appears and asks Mackenzie how Dean is, shooting a look at Ziggy.

Later, Bella, Mackenzie, Ziggy, Tane, Ari and Chloe are all scattered around the waiting area. Chloe reminds Ari that this is what she was afraid of happening and blames him for Mia going through this again. Ziggy quietly wonders if she and Tane should do a Diner run but Tane thinks no-one feels like eating and asks if she’s worried about Dean. Bella tells Mackenzie it’s her fault for pushing Nik away and Mackenzie says it was an accident. Tori appears and tells them Dean’s stable. Mackenzie thanks her and Tori says it was down to the doctor who brought him in. She says Nikau’s still in surgery but Mia’s fine and has been taken to a ward. She leads Ari and Chloe there. Mia tells Ari she isn’t willing to try again, then turns away, saying she wants some sleep.

Tane finds Ari in the corridor and says he’s sorry about the baby. Ari stops Tane from touching him, then sits down and bursts into tears. Tane comforts him. Meanwhile, Logan is with Dean as he comes round. Logan notes that he wishes he could say the worst is over but it will be a long recovery. Dean notes he’s been here before. Tori tries to talk to Logan about the way he behaved before but Logan dismissively says they got the outcome they wanted.

Christian and his team have finished operating on Nikau. Mia and Chloe cuddle up to each other. Logan gives Mackenzie a hug of thanks as Dean is taken into ICU. Ari and Tane come past and Tane sees Ziggy, Bella and Mackenzie all watching over Dean. The two brothers join Christian by Nikau’s bedside. On the pier, Leah and Justin kiss as the fireworks go off behind them.

Christian runs into Tori waiting for a lift. He gets a text from Justin with a selfie of him and Leah with the fireworks and tells Tori it was meant to be them. Tori notes she’s fond of the lift, since they had their first kiss there. Christian suddenly tells her to hold the lift and rushes to get his jacket. Joining her, he produces the ring and, getting down on one knee, proposes to her again. Tori crouches down, says yes, and kisses him as the doors close. Next morning, Leah, Justin, Tori and Christian are all on the balcony at Salt. Leah and Justin teasingly talk about the crab puffs and champagne and the song he sang, noting Christian organised a romantic night. Tori says it didn’t match their night. Christian gets a call into work as Leah notes it’s good to see Tori wearing the ring again.

Christian rushes into hospital, passing Ari. The team is working on Nikau, explaining he arrested. Bella arrives and Ari tells her that Nikau was asleep and then this happened. Christian gets Nikau back into sinus and rushes him into theatre. Later, Ari and Bella ask Jasmine what’s going on. She looks over the notes and says Nikau’s been in theatre for an hour, telling them to wait in his room while she looks into it. Ari goes to call Tane, telling Bella to stay put and wait for news.

Jasmine goes into theatre and asks Christian for an update. Christian confirms there’s a secondary bleed and tells her to check back in an hour. He quietly tells Nikau that he needs to pull through because this has to be a good day.
