I'm guessing this is the only place to ask this question, can't find any other sort of thread

I'm in the middle of writting a fic, will start posting it come next week hopefully and have written 10 chapters so far out of 22. I just wrote a scene, that was, well, not something I would normally write, but the whole mood, characters etc led me on to write it (if that makes any sense so far  ) It's a sexual scene, nothing too hardcore, well not descriptive hardcore but it's suggesting to that way (which is happening) I also have two other very small scenes, but are not so hardcore, just references... I was just wondering can I rate it T? or A? Or T with the warnings at the beginning of these two chapters that have the sexual content? It's not as if the whole story is soft porn or anything, it's deffinetly not an R. After reading the guidelines, I'm just confused... I really don't want it put into the adult section, because the story isn't adult, it's based on teens...

Hopefully this makes sense to whoever reads it and feels kind enough to answer it :P What I was originally going to do was rate it T with the warnings at the beginning of the chapters when something more heavy comes along... Any guidance or whatever, please put my mind to rest :P

Well I'd but it at a T/A rating and just add specific warnings before you post that Chapter. If there's only one or two of those type of scenes there's no point in rating it A+ or R and putting it in the Adult Forum. Just make sure you warn. :P

Ask yourself is it the sort of scene you'd see playing out on haa? If it is then you can call it a T, if not you can call it an A. I see no reason why you can't rate your story T but have one or two chapters as A provided they are heavily warned.

OK. Cheers girls...

Well I'll start it off with a T/A rating, and hopefully you librarians don't think it's too graphic. If it is and it has to be moved... *sighs* well then I guess that's life.

Thanks again.

I'm having that problem myself. And I'm supposed to know these things :P

I've just written a sex scene for "After the Crash" (yes, I AM still writing that thing... two years on...) It's always been an A rating because it deals with some pretty heavy stuff... and some pretty sexy stuff ... I've recently moved it into the Adult forum just in case. But in 60ish chapters there's only been about 4 that have been what I'd call "adult" so I haven't actually changed it to an R rating. So... I might move it back out again later. I don't know what I'm doing with it to be honest, but my official stance would be T rating equates to a PG rating - so anything you'd see on H&A or a sitcom of that rating (because H&A doesn't really push the envelope much). A would equal an M rating, so that allows you to get your more graphic violence as per your cop shows and allow for suggested or obscured sex scenes as you might see in a show like ... hm, Buffy around the Spike saga? (Probably the limit there.) And I think our R goes up to equal an MA rating, so... I feel like that's the same situations you might find in an A rated fic, but written in such a way that it's more intense in "in your face" so to speak...

It's difficult to class writing to be honest. We base these fic ratings on TV and movie ratings because that's what we're most familiar with, but when you're watching something on film, it's being presented to you as is - you see exactly what the censors and ratings permit you to see. Reading is different. Reading is an imaginative process where the writer has to put in enough suggestion to let you know what's happening, without being obscene or evasive to the point of what they're trying to tell you. It's really hard to get that mix some times, and it can sometimes leave both parties feeling like there's a lack of effective communication when there are restrictions put on it. But this is ultimately a "family" board. I think the point is with this rating system that we're trying to protect people who don't want to read adult material - the adult forum has the password written right there on it so that anyone can access it if they choose to, but it is their active choice and they read that content with the knowledge that it may not be entirely suitable for them. Having it separated and password protected is purely to keep people from reading things that might offend them by accident.

I'm sure you get that Drew, but I just thought I'd say it as a reminder to anyone else who might be concerned about it.

As Kat said, if it's only a few scenes in your fic that you're concerned about, and they don't go too far over the line of an T or A rating, then I think chapter warnings should be ok :)

*kicks thread awake*

Hope your don't mind me bringing this one up again. For the last couple of weeks(months maybe) I have been having the urge to write fanfiction again and am a little frightened. I haven't written anything since... 08/09 but have been so engrossed in H&A that the urge to pick up a pen is back.

I'm thinking of little ficlets involving Dex. Possible slashy goodness aswell.

Is this a good idea?
