Extended Summary

Outside the Parata house, Felicity checks on Tane and says to let her know if she can do anything. Nikau also appears and Bella calls after him that he’s forgotten his shoes, telling him she loves him. At the hospital, Logan asks Ari if he had a good night and Ari says he had some wild dreams, jokingly asking if a miracle cure was discovered overnight. Tane and Nikau appear and tell him Mia will be in soon. They ask Logan to get rid of the equipment for an hour and want Ari to dress up for family photos, giving him a white shirt. Chloe and Mia emerge from the lift dressed in their wedding outfits and join them in the room. Mia tells Ari that the celebrant should arrive any minute: They’re getting married today.

At the farm house, Ziggy encourages Dean to ask Karen how long she’s going to stay. Karen and Brett appear and Ziggy says Dean will make them breakfast. Watching the pair kiss, she quietly tells Dean that he can watch that every morning or ask the question. Dean calls Karen over for a chat while Brett goes in the shower. Karen expresses astonishment that someone actually loves her. Later, Dean meets Ziggy by the beach. She isn’t happy that he didn’t ask but accepts his point that he’s never seen Karen happy before. Mackenzie appears in a grumpy mood, saying she woke up alone, although she accepts Logan was probably saving someone’s life. Dean says she should have hooked up with a bum like him. Mackenzie invites them up to Salt.

At the hospital, the celebrant comments that Mia called her at 3am and wasn’t taking no for an answer. She invites Mia and Ari to speak. Mia tells Ari she loves him and always will: They don’t get their happily ever after but she’ll take comfort and joy in being his wife. Ari notes he’s not good at making speeches and doubles up in pain, but rallies to say that when he first met her, he told Mikaere he’d marry her, even though he was punching above his weight and drunk, and not to forget how much he loves her. Later, they exchange rings. Mia repeats the celebrant’s vows but Ari chimes in with his own, telling her to always remember this moment when she looks at it. Chloe tears up and Nikau comforts her. The celebrant pronounces them husband and wife and they kiss…but as everyone congratulates them, Ari collapses and Logan helps him up onto the bed.

Felicity and Bella are still at the Parata house, waiting for news. Felicity feels strange still being there. Bella feels the same and Felicity notes at least Bella’s part of the family, whereas she’s only been there a couple of times. Bella notes that Felicity obviously cares about Tane and him about her. At the hospital, Tane, Nikau and Chloe are waiting for news. The celebrant says she can arrange for everyone to sign the paperwork to legalise the marriage later. Logan calls them through to join Ari and Mia, and Tane tells the celebrant to wait. Logan explains that Ari’s in hypovolemic shock: They’re trying to sort it with a blood transfusion but it might not work. Nikau protests that it can’t happen today. Ari says he thinks it is.

At Salt, Dean and Ziggy have filled Mackenzie in on the situation with Karen. Mackenzie wonders what if Karen wants to stay. She gives them space as Karen and Brett arrive, with Karen taking a swig from Dean’s drink. Karen suggests they get her a new bedspread that doesn’t have surfboards on, maybe in satin, and the room needs a lick of paint. Brett tells her to storm terrifying them and explains they’re leaving. Dean points out she lost her rental and Karen explains she’s moving in with Brett: They’re still taking the marriage idea slow but it seems right. Later, the four of them walk from the building with Karen noting she left a note on John’s desk and to let her know if he blushes. Brett and Ziggy give Dean and Karen space to say goodbye on their own, then Karen drives off with Brett.

Ari signs the wedding certificate. Mia asks who he wants as witnesses and Ari chooses Chloe and Nikau, to the latter’s surprise. Logan checks Ari’s ECG and Ari, in a panic, says to get it off him. Tane calms him. Ari says he wishes he could be on the beach with his feet in the water. Logan notes that’s not possible, which Ari knows but he doesn’t want to die like this. Shortly afterwards, the equipment is gone and everyone is sat around Ari. He hums a melody then sings in Māori before slipping away. Mia kisses him. Nikau rests his forehead against his. Tane repeats the gesture, telling Ari to sleep well.

Felicity is at the Parata house as Tane arrives home looking shattered. He walks into his room without saying anything to her or Bella. On the pier, a tearful Nikau does moves with the taiaha. Down on the beach, Chloe and Mia are still in their wedding clothes. Mia walks out into the sea in the dress.
