Extended Summary

Ziggy and Dean are walking by the beach. Ziggy wonders how Karen and Brett are getting on. Dean says he just threw them at each other and left, pondering that Karen might be smashing plates now. Ziggy points out that those are their plates and convinces him to go back and check. Nearby, Felicity leaves a message for Tane, suggesting they meet for dinner and work on his wedding speech. Dean arrives back at the farm house and is greeted by the sight of Karen emerging from the bedroom, with a duvet wrapped around her being all that preserves her modesty. She tells an ashen Dean that this is what he wanted and he replies he didn’t want it in their house in his son’s bed. Karen accidentally lets the duvet drop, increasing his mortification. Brett appears wearing a towel and gives Dean a hug, thanking him for his help. Dean beats a retreat, saying he’s going to stick his head in the lawnmower.

On the balcony at Salt, Felicity texts Tane, suggesting they just have dinner. Ziggy calls over from a nearby table asking for a refill. Dean arrives and says he’ll have what Ziggy’s having, draining the remains of her drink first. He explains that Karen and Brett are in the “make up” stage. Ziggy looks as horrified as him but says at least they might get their house back. Dean says they might need to get rid of the surfboard doona. Near the beach, Chloe asks Bella why she’s being nice to her. Bella says she knows Chloe feels bad about the wedding but her family don’t blame her. She suggests Chloe go back to the hospital. Chloe asks Bella to come with her. Bella says she wouldn’t feel right but she’ll be there afterwards.

Chloe arrives back at the hospital and joins Mia, Nikau and Tane in Ari’s room, where Logan is giving him pain relief. Ari says he’s made a decision about the surgery: He’s not going to have it, since it’s not a cure and it would mean spending the rest of his life in either a prison cell or a hospital bed. Nikau and Mia are horrified, and Tane agrees it’s not like him. Nikau tells him they’ve spoken to the lawyer and might be able to get him bail. Ari says that doesn’t make a difference since he can’t fight it. Tane takes an upset Nikau out and Nikau yells at the guard for not noticing he was sick. Tane manages to calm him down. Logan realises Ari is still in pain and says they’ll arrange for him to administer the pain relief himself. Tane and Nikau come back in as Logan leaves. Ari says he wants to die on his own terms.

Ziggy and Dean arrive home and Ziggy wonders if they should knock. Karen calls them through to the kitchen, where she and Brett are fully clothed, and says they’ve finished for now. They have made a pasta meal to celebrate with garlic bread. She pours Ziggy a large wine. Later, Dean and Ziggy are doing their best to stomach the meal and refuse seconds. Ziggy asks about the engagement. Brett gives Karen the necklace with the ring back and they say they’re going to take it at their own pace. Brett comments he could be Dean’s stepdad, before he and Karen disappear for “dessert”.

Logan sets up the pain relief pump for Ari. Ari asks Tane to take Chloe and Nikau home. Both of them want to stay but Tane goes along with it and Mia says she’ll call them if anything changes. Chloe asks if he’d fight if everything with Matthew hadn’t happened. Ari says maybe he would but he’d still lose. After they’re left alone, Mia tells Ari she’s never going to be okay with him choosing to die and goes to walk Chloe out. At the surf club, Bella is on the phone saying she’ll see them when they get there. Felicity appears and asks if she’s okay. Bella asks if she’s spoken to Tane, explaining that Ari’s in hospital and he’s not okay.

Logan checks on Ari, who asks if he saw Mia outside. Logan offers to go and look for her. Ari asks him what he’d do in his position. Logan admits he doesn’t know. Mia arrives back and Logan leaves them alone. Ari says he thought she wasn’t coming back and Mia agrees, telling him she’s not okay with him giving up on them. Ari says he’s got no choice. He convulses with pain and asks Mia to stay with him. At Salt, Bella greets Tane, Nikau and Chloe and tells Tane that she told Felicity. He’s fine with it. Felicity approaches Tane and offers her commiserations.

Mia asks Ari if the pain relief pump is helping. He says yes and no but turns down her offer to go and get a doctor. He says it feels as though everything bad that’s happened to her is because of him and regrets that he didn’t marry her years ago.
