Extended Summary

Logan is standing on the pier while Dean and Ziggy meet Mackenzie near the Diner. She tells them about Logan moving out and how he hasn’t explained. Dean points him out but Mackenzie refuses to talk to him, saying she’s heading into work. Dean follows her, leaving Ziggy to have breakfast on her own. Justin goes into the Diner on the phone to Tori, chatting about their new nephew, and breaks off when he sees Ziggy. She asks him not to talk about it at work. Nearby, Irene asks Alf if she can get him anything but he says he’s waiting for Roo. Irene gets him a refill.

Dean is propping up the bar in Salt, eating slowly so Mackenzie talks to him. She says Logan’s moving out the day after he moved in and asks why Ziggy’s unhappy. Dean says it’s nothing to do with him, explaining about her ex having a baby. Mackenzie says an ex’s good news makes you feel bad about your own life. Logan arrives and Dean leaves him to it, saying to come and see him afterwards. Logan says he had enough of rules and rosters when he lived in a barracks: He didn’t want to live in a share house and forgot Bella lived there. Mackenzie walks away, annoyed. At the Parata house, Chloe tells Nikau she’s told Matthew she doesn’t want to see him. Tane appears and takes Nikau’s toast. Ari and Mia also appear. Nikau and Tane head off to training. Chloe says she has to head to work and Ari says he’ll walk her.

As Ari and Chloe approach the Diner, he nervously explains that he’s planning to propose to Mia and wants to know her thoughts. Chloe is delighted and hugs him. Ari points out Mia hasn’t said yes yet and Chloe says she’d better. They arrive at the Diner, with Chloe making him promise to give her details. Ari says he’ll do it soon and not to tell anyone.

At the surf club, Dean is telling Logan he needs to get out in the water again and points out Logan’s alternative is arguing with Mackenzie, who’s approaching. Logan nips out and Dean calls someone, saying he needs a favour. Ari comes in and tells Nikau and Tane they need to lay a hangi. Nikau says he has patrol, but after a bit of strong-arming, says he’ll tell John he’ll be late. Soon after, Ari finds Nikau and Tane at the house. Mia appears and Nikau offers to give her a shovel. Ari sends her out to get desserts. Tane privately asks Ari what’s going on and Ari tells him his plans.

Justin and Ziggy arrive at Salt. Mackenzie chats to Ziggy about Logan moving in. Justin distractedly says that’s quick, then realises he’s put his foot in it again and moves to the end of the bar. Ziggy and Mackenzie chat about her ex having a baby. Ziggy explains it’s Justin’s brother and Justin notes he still doesn’t get it. Ziggy says it highlights everything wrong with her life and wishes they could turn back time to before Dean’s accident. Outside, Logan gives Dean a few words before he heads out with his surf board. Ziggy and Mackenzie appear; Ziggy sees what’s going on and calls out to Dean, who looks back but goes in anyway. The first wave knocks Dean off his board, but he gets back on and manages to stand up on a wave. Ziggy runs over, wondering how he got the board back, and kisses him in delight, saying nothing about the moment sucks.

Alf and Roo walk near the Diner. He knows she’s had doubts since she saw the psychologist and Roo admits she was made to think about things she’d been avoiding. Alf accepts her being scared. Outside the Parata house, Ari, Nikau and Tane are putting finishing touches. Chloe delivers Mia, who she has got dressed up for the occasion. Ari hugs Mia and gives Chloe a wink.

At the Diner, Alf tells Roo that no-one would blame her if she doesn’t go through with it. He heads off to see Martha, with Roo saying she’ll pay. Roo goes over to Irene, admitting she wanted so much to be a match and now something’s holding her back. Irene asks how she’d feel if she didn’t donate and Martha didn’t make it. Meanwhile, Alf goes to the hospital chapel. He says it’s a long time since they’ve talked and he doesn’t ask for things often. He notes he should have offered thanks for getting Martha back before and talks about having both her and Roo with him. He asks for strength to support his family whatever happens.

Tane finds Ari inside the house with a ring and guesses he hasn’t just bought it. Ari explains he was planning to propose to Mia when the baby was born, then the accident happened and Matthew was around. He thinks it’s their turn. Tane buttons up Ari’s shirt. Meanwhile, Alf finds Roo in Martha’s room and says he wasn’t expecting her to come in. Roo says she and Martha have a lot to talk about and Martha agrees. Roo explains that she’s decided to donate.

Back at the Paratas’, Ari comes outside and stands with his back to Mia. Tane quietly tells Chloe that he’s choosing his moment. Mia asks Ari to sit down so they can eat. Ari instead kneels down in front of her and, as Tane surreptitiously films them, asks her to marry him. Chloe tells Mia not to leave him hanging and Mia says it’s a yes. Nikau cheers and the others applaud as Ari puts the ring on her finger and they kiss.
