Extended Summary

Ryder and Theo are sat outside the Diner, with Theo looking at comments from their new female fans. Ryder asks for his cut ($800) but says he needs more to pay off his family. He gets an alert on the payment and explains he thought it was Roo, telling Theo she might be donating a kidney to her mum. Outside the Parata house, Ari, Tane, Chloe and Mia are celebrating. Mia realises that both Tane and Chloe knew about the proposal and Ari comments that it’s a shame Nikau couldn’t stick around. Felicity turns up looking for Tane.

Tane and Felicity go into the house and Tane drily comments on it being his brother’s engagement. Felicity says she’s caught up with Cash and is going to get out of town. She was going to ask Tane to come with her but understands he has other things on. Tane says he will come and to just give him time to grab a bag. Outside, Chloe is telling Mia that if she’s going to be bridesmaid, she wants input on the dresses. Ari checks with Tane that he’s sure he knows what he’s doing before Tane leaves with Felicity. Chloe makes a speech to the small remaining audience, toasting her mother and the only father she’s ever known and saying that even though Mia was already perfect, she’s better with Ari.

Ryder and Theo are discussing ideas at the Diner. Ryder warns Theo not to mention water melons and lighthouses. He suggests going through a ball pit with cameras on their heads but Theo says that would get them arrested and suggests running through a car wash. Justin comes in and warns them against more challenges, saying someone will get hurt or arrested, although Theo points out it got him an ad for the garage. Once he’s out of earshot, they start talking about it again. Ryder gets a text saying Roo’s going ahead and Theo says to go and he’ll pay their bill. Justin notes it’s weird seeing him being nice to Ryder. At the hospital, Martha checks that Alf didn’t put pressure on Roo. Roo comes back and says there’s a slot for the transplant tomorrow. Martha seems cautious but Roo is on board. Ryder turns up with flowers and a balloon, saying they didn’t have one that said “Happy new kidney”. He looks for a vase and finds the coffin brochure in the drawer. Martha tells him to throw it away. He does but looks thoughtful.

Tane and Felicity are driving on a bush road. Tane asks where she wants to go and Felicity admits she didn’t really have any thoughts beyond driving away but says she could do with somewhere with a bed and a shower. Tane says he knows a place and drives to a country cabin, saying he’s got contacts and it’s got everything Flick asked for. He tries to ask her what happened with Cash but she dodges the question, wondering what it’s like inside.

At Salt, Ryder is telling Theo about an idea he’s had. Theo isn’t entirely convinced but Ryder says he’ll be the one to do it and suggests they could live stream it and have a cover charge, which gets Theo enthusiastic. Justin stops by and wonders what they’re talking about. Ryder says world politics and Theo says chicks. After Justin’s gone, Theo asks if Ryder has a tape measure. Outside the Parata house, Chloe wonders if she should get engaged too. Ari asks who to and she dismisses that as details, wondering if Tane’s getting engaged as well. She gets Ari and Mia to pose for a selfie with her and then films them dancing. Her phone silently alerts her to a call from Mathew; she has several missed calls from him. She rejects the call and blocks the number.

Tane has started a fire while Felicity was in the bath. She tells him about Cash bringing the police file back. Tane notes that’s what she wanted. Felicity agrees but says there was no investigation because they already knew what happened: There were no suspicious circumstances and it was self-inflicted. Later, Tane brings her a cup of tea and they note they’ve never done anything normal like this before. They cuddle up and then kiss, softly and intimately.

Both Roo and Martha are settling in at the hospital. Roo offers some reassurances as Alf watches them from the door. Next morning, Ryder and Theo have driven out into the bush and Theo complains that they couldn’t get closer. He has knocked up a large wooden box overnight, which Ryder complains has splinters. Theo sarcastically offers him a pillow. They carry the box into the bush, with Theo commenting about being buried alive. Seeing Ryder’s nervous expression, he suggests he could do it but Ryder tells him to dig.

Chloe is working at the Diner when Matthew suddenly appears. He wonders why she’s ignoring his calls, since last time they spoke she was moving in with him and going to business college. She says he lost any right to talk to her when he laid hands on her mum. Matthew asks exactly what Mia told her, following Chloe outside and asking to give his side of the story. Chloe says Mia wouldn’t lie and Matthew says she has a particular point of view. Alf appears and Matthew asks him to give them a minute. Alf agrees but Chloe says Matthew was leaving and he grudgingly complies.

Ryder and Theo have dug a deep hole and placed the open box in it. Ryder says he’ll be okay so long as Theo remember the rules and doesn’t leave him down there. Theo says Ryder wins the challenge if he lasts five hours in the coffin. Ryder gets into it as Theo starts the stream. Ryder talks to the audience from his closed box, as Theo starts to bury him and he gets a stream of shocked but definitely interested comments. He explains Theo will dig him out if he uses the safe word “boomerang”. Meanwhile, Tane and Felicity are waking up together. She says she slept well for the first time in weeks but then bursts into tears, saying her father was all they had left with their mum gone and he still chose to leave and she didn’t notice how much pain he was in. Tane cradles her.
