Extended Summary

Bella and Nikau are walking by the road, discussing what they’re going to do. The car that hit Ari passes them at speed and Nikau thinks he saw Paul driving it. He tries to call one of his uncles, but moments later they come across Ari. Nikau tries to rouse him and his hand comes away covered in blood. He tells Bella to phone an ambulance. At the Diner flat, Mackenzie is wondering how to tell Ari. Dean suggests she should just do it. Mackenzie wonders if she should arrange to meet him in person. They’re interrupted by Amber coming home, which prompts Mackenzie to make the call.

Ari is being loaded into an ambulance. Bella tells Nikau to go with him and she’ll meet him at the hospital. She hears a phone ringing and finds Ari’s phone on the ground, answering the call from Mac. Mackenzie is shocked to hear what’s happened. Dean takes the phone off her and tells Bella he’ll come and get her. He asks Amber to look after Mac. At the hospital, Tori is checking Christian didn’t mind what she said earlier and tells him not to think so much. Lewis tells them a male trauma patient is coming in with a right side head injury from being hit by a car. Jasmine adds that it’s Ari.

Outside the bait shop, Mia is telling Alf that she won’t need to extend her stay at the caravan park, noting they were never meant to be there permanently. Alf asks where they’re going. Chloe appears and wants to know the same thing. Alf quickly withdraws as Chloe objects to Mia making all the decisions again. Mia tries to stop Chloe answering a phone call but it’s from Nik, who obviously gives her the news. Up in the flat, Amber offers to take Mackenzie to the hospital. Mackenzie talks about how break-ups are weird, like with Amber and Dean. Amber says things are weird between them because they have a child together and guesses Mackenzie is pregnant by Ari. Mackenzie invites her to call her stupid. Amber guesses Mackenzie is just scared like she was.

Bella and Dean join Nikau and Tane at the hospital. They report that the doctors have mentioned broken ribs. Nikau is still sure he saw Paul although Bella can’t back him up. Tori and Christian come over and say that none of Ari’s injuries are life-threatening but they’ve had to place him in an induced coma in order for him to recover. Staff including Lewis and Jasmine wheel Ari past on his way to a scan. They pass Chloe and Mia, with Mia asking Tane what’s happened to him. Later, Ari is brought back and Christian looks at the scans. He immediately decides Ari needs to go straight into theatre, since there’s bleeding on the brain. The family worry.

Amber gives Mackenzie a sandwich but she isn’t particularly hungry. She asks Amber if she regrets not telling Dean earlier. Amber admits she does but says they were never a couple: She was head over heels for Dean but he never felt the same way. She thinks Ari and Mackenzie will work things out. Later, Mackenzie asks Amber if she considered not having the baby. Amber confirms she did, since she was young and broke and getting lectures from her mum, and doesn’t really know why she ended up having Jai. Dean and Bella arrive back and explain about the surgery. Amber and Dean go to get food, leaving Bella and Mackenzie to chat. Outside, Amber tells Dean that Mackenzie told her about the baby. Dean is glad Mackenzie has someone to talk to, since he worries he’s been giving the wrong advice. Amber thinks Mackenzie needs to go to the hospital because she might not have another chance to see Ari.

Tori approaches Tane, Nikau, Mia and Chloe: The surgery is still ongoing but she assures them it’s going well and it’s normal to take this long. Tane gets a text and asks Mia to keep an eye on things. Nikau follows him away from the others and Tane shows him the text: “Are you having fun yet? I hope so because you’re next.” He guesses it’s from Paul and says he has to stop him. Nikau tries to object, saying he can’t lose anyone else, but Tane says that’s what will happen if he doesn’t go. Later, Mia, Nikau and Chloe are waiting for Ari to be brought back. Chloe realises her phone has a lot of messages from Ari that she hasn’t listened to and tells Mia not all of them want to run away. Ari arrives back. Christian tells them that the operation went well but Ari will have to be kept in a coma and they’re not sure when he’ll come round. Lewis has been listening in and, after Christian’s gone, tells them that Ari’s cleared the first hurdle but there are many more to come. He and Jasmine leave them to it.

Tane is waiting in his car in the woods. Paul’s car draws up nearby. Tane goes over and tells him to get out of the car, adding that there’s no-one else there. Paul says they know why Ari isn’t there and asks if he’s dead yet. Tane pulls Paul out of the car and throws him to the floor, saying Ari’s fighting for his life in hospital and Paul should visit him. Meanwhile, Bella, Dean and Mackenzie arrive at the hospital, to be greeted by Nikau and Chloe. They ask if they can see Ari. Nikau notes he’s only allowed one or two visitors at a time. Mackenzie offers to come back later but Dean says this is why they’re here. Mackenzie goes to the room but sees Mia lying asleep across Ari and quickly thinks better of it. Nikau gets a text from Tane simply saying “It’s done.”

Jasmine and Lewis arrive at the beach house. Jasmine says Lewis did well with the Paratas and Lewis says he knows what it’s like to be waiting for good news and not get it. Jasmine asks him to stay. Lewis asks if she means for dinner. Jasmine says she means for breakfast and kisses him. At the hospital, Tori is assuring Christian he did a good job. Tane arrives supporting Paul, who he dumps in front of the medics. He says he’s the one that ran Ari down and they should call the police.

Some time later, Mia is still sat by Ari’s bedside. Chloe comes in and notes Mia’s supposed to hate him. Mia says it’s not that simple but Chloe calls her a hypocrite. Nikau, Bella and Tane come in. Nikau says he and Bella are going home and invites Chloe to come with them. He thanks Tane for taking care of Paul. Left alone, Tane tells Mia that Chloe didn’t mean what she said but Mia thinks she did and admits she’d have done things differently if she knew what would happen. Tane encourages her to talk to Ari and leaves her with him. Mia says it can’t end with her saying things she didn’t mean and if Ari stays she’ll fix things.

Amber is surprised that Mackenzie went to the hospital and didn’t say anything. Dean points out Ari’s in a coma and thanks her for looking after Mac, worrying that they’ll end up as best friends. Although she wouldn’t go that far, Amber says Mackenzie’s not that bad. Dean reminds her she thought Mackenzie was a princess and took a swing at her. Amber says things change, pointing to them. Dean asks when she got so great and Amber quips that she was always great and Dean was just too stupid to see. Dean says he’s starting to see the light. They have an awkward moment and Amber says she’s going to check on Jai.
