It was believed for almost Marilyn’s entire life that her parents had died when she was young, leaving her in an orphanage, before she was eventually taken in by her mother Heather’s sister, Jean.

When a visit from Jean in 1991 led to the pair having a fall out, Jean revealed to Marilyn that Heather hadn’t actually died, but had given her up as she couldn’t be bothered with her.

Marilyn began a search for her parents, with her ad in the papers being answered by Heather and Max Riley. But after spending time getting to know them, Marilyn was thrown when she then received a letter from Heather and George Davidson, also claiming to be her parents.

Marilyn organised to meet the Davidsons, who didn’t give off a good first impression, and was devastated to realise that they were indeed her biological parents after Heather presented a photo of her and Jean. They informed Marilyn that George had a bad heart, with Bobby correctly guessing that he was receiving an invalid pension as a result, and that they were performers, who had resorted to fruit picking to subsidise their wage as they were out of work.

The pair made ripples in Summer Bay by getting Bobby and Pippa offside, and they interrupted a dinner between Marilyn and the Rileys, breaking the news that they were Marilyn’s actual parents. George was quick to accuse the genuinely mistaken Rileys of trying to get money out of Marilyn.

Marilyn shared a meal with George and Heather, and it became clear they were quite demanding. The pair explained their intention to stick around, parking their van at the back of the house, though were seemingly unwilling to contribute to the household and helped themselves to more food as they left for the evening. Marilyn admitted to Bobby that the Davidsons were revolting.

The next day, the pair planned to change their address to the Beach House for for purpose of George’s invalid pension, and then asked Marilyn for $50. Marilyn realised they weren’t genuine people and she ordered them to leave. As she and Bobby pushed them out of the Beach House, George called Marilyn an ungrateful little tart.

The Davidsons were never heard of again.

Doug Scroope would go on to play the father of another Summer Bay regular 14 years later, when he appeared as Graham Walters, dad to Beth Hunter
