I can't believe this. RIC: It's negative, Mattie. I thought you'd be relieved. MATILDA: It's not that... I am relieved. I was just so sure that I was pregnant, you know. RIC: Yeah... but we'll be safer from now on, right? MATILDA: For sure! DOWNSTAIRS IN THE LIVING ROOM. Peter is looking at Sally in his arms, she is watching TV while holding onto his hand. PETER: I hope all of our kids are okay with us dating. SALLY: Mine are. They told me they just wanted to see me happy. PETER: Drew didn't say anything yet... Should I talk to him about this? SALLY: I don't know... it's your son. PETER: But you know him. What's the best way to handle this? SALLY: Just talk to him, hear what he has to say and don't lose your temper. PETER: Right... SALLY: I'm sure he'll be fine with it. PETER: Well if he's not, he should get over it. I love you and I want to be with you. They kiss. Sally's cell phone rings. PETER: Ah, come on! SALLY: Sally Fletcher speaking. Oh, hi Emma! I'm not sure whether I'll be there, but I'll ask one of the other teachers to stand in for me. Of course! Okay, bye! PETER: Who was that? SALLY: Emma McKenzie, she's a new teacher. PETER: Oh. When is she coming? SALLY: Tomorrow, actually. PETER: You're booked off, Miss Fletcher. There's no way you're going to work! SALLY: Well, yes sir! He laughs. OUTSIDE (FLETCHER HOME) Cassie and Rocco are sitting next to each other. ROCCO: It was a gang member. CASSIE: How can you be sure? Maybe it was just a random guy whisteling. ROCCO: No, it wasn't Cassie! I know that whistle! CASSIE: Okay! ROCCO: I didn't mean to snap at you... It's just... CASSIE: What? ROCCO: They saw me with you. CASSIE: So? ROCCO: They wanted me to know that. CASSIE: Who? ROCCO: I don't know who it was! But it was a warning. Just promise me you'll be careful, okay? CASSIE: What, so you think they'll try to get to me to hurt you? ROCCO: That's what I'm afraid of. CASSIE: Okay. I'll be careful. ROCCO: I love you, Cassie. CASSIE: And I love you. HOLDEN/HUNTER HOUSE Jack walks in with Fitzy. He helps her to sit down on the couch. Tony comes out of the kitchen. TONY: Hey guys. Enjoy your walk? JACK: Yeah, it was great! TONY: Did you walk much? Fitzy and Jack both blush and Tony laughs. FITZY: Jack, I want to lie down for a bit. The walk made me kind of tired. JACK: Sure. I'll help you to the room. FITZY: Thanks. She smiles at him. Tony looks at them with a sad glance in his eyes. THE NEXT MORNING SUMMER BAY HIGH Tony and Dan are walking next to each other when a small, blonde woman appears in the hall. Dan enters his classroom and Tony walks further. He sees a small, blonde woman and comes to a stop. TONY: Hi. I'm Tony Holden. EMMA: I'm Emma Smith. TONY: Oh the new teacher? But Sal said your name was Emma McKenzie? EMMA: I took my maiden name back after my divorce. TONY: Oh. Well... Sally isn't here at the moment, but I'll show you around if you like. EMMA: I'd love that. DAN AND LEAH'S HOUSE Leah is in the kitchen. She reaches up to get something out of the cupboard, but quickly grabs her stomach and falls down, her body limp... FLETCHER HOME Sally is in the kitchen, washing the dishes. She checks the clock and picks up her phone. She dials a number. DAN AND LEAH'S HOUSE The phone rings. Leah is still lying motionless on the floor. FLETCHER HOME Sally frowns and puts down the phone. SUMMER BAY HIGH: TONY: You'll love it here, it's great. The kids are good too. EMMA: Sounds nice... TONY: Yeah... My son goes to school here, he'll be in your class. EMMA: You have a son? TONY: Yeah, two. Jack and Lucas. Jack is a policeman. EMMA: I see. TONY: Do you have children? EMMA: Yeah... I have a daughter. TONY: How old is she? EMMA: Sixteen. But she lives with her father... TONY: Oh... Sorry, I didn't want to sound nosy or anything. EMMA: Not at all! So where do you eat around here? TONY: Most of the kids go to the diner at lunch time. EMMA: How about the teachers? TONY: We also like the diner. I'll take you there for lunch - if you want. Since you're new here and all... EMMA: Thanks, that would be nice. TONY: Great. Stops Well... this is your class. Good luck. EMMA: Thanks! She smiles brightly and he leaves, looking back at her small figure standing in the door. FLETCHER HOME Sally is sitting on the couch, reading a magazine. She sighs, and stands up, grabbing her car keys before going out the door. SUMMER BAY HIGH Students enter Emma's class. Rocco and Cassie are walking in the back, whispering. CASSIE: So you think they'll try something? ROCCO: I know they will. They want me back in the gang, and they want Johnny out of jail. CASSIE: But you won't go back to them. ROCCO: Of course not! I don't need them, you're all I need now. CASSIE: Maybe we should tell Sally about this. ROCCO: No! Sally's been through enough, I don't want to upset her. CASSIE: What about Peter then? ROCCO: No, I'll deal with this on my own. Just... never be alone, okay. I wouldn't be able to handle them getting to you. CASSIE: Okay. DAN AND LEAH'S HOUSE Leah is still lying in the kitchen. Sally knocks on the door. SALLY: Leah? She opens the door and sees Leah lying on the floor. SALLY: Leah! Rushes to her. What happened, are you okay? Leah, can you hear me? She picks up her cell phone and dials a number SALLY: Pick up, pick up! Peter! Come to Leah and Dan's house now, it's urgent! SUMMER BAY HIGH Emma's class. Everybody is reading. Suddenly Mattie jumps up and runs out of the classroom with her hand over her mouth. Everyone starts talking at the same time. EMMA: Settle down... QUIET! Points to Cassie Keep them quiet, I'll be back. She runs out of the class after Matilda. HOSPITAL Sally runs in, followed by Peter who is carrying Leah. SALLY: We need a doctor! Rachel comes out of the nearest room. RACHEL: Bring her in here. Peter puts Leah down on the bed and Rachel bends over her. RACHEL: Leah? Can you hear me? Leah, this is Rachel, can you hear me? She looks up at Sally and Peter. RACHEL: I'm going to have to ask you to leave. SALLY: She'll be all right, won't she? RACHEL: I don't know.
