Extended Summary

Felicity is coming up from the beach and exchanges glares with Tane, who is setting up for a class nearby. Roo approaches Felicity who tells her about Tane turning up at her work last night. She wonders if she overreacted but Roo says she needs to feel safe and set Tane boundaries. Felicity explains Tane wasn’t there for her but to pick up Ryder, who was drunk and who she was about to chuck out herself. She apologises for dobbing him in. At the Parata house, Ari and Mia question Ryder about leaving Chloe alone at the club. Ryder says Tane didn’t give him much choice and Chloe was with Theo. He laments the fact they’ve been together all night, while Mia fails to get an answer phoning her. Ryder gets texts from Roo asking if he’s all right and reminding him of the birthday lunch. Ari tells him to get cleaned up and he’ll take him.

Chloe and Theo are eating on the grass near the Diner. Chloe is keen to avoid Mia and Ryder as long as possible. Theo says Ryder’s an idiot. Chloe says he can be sometimes but kidnapping him was extreme and she might need more details next time she leaves him to handle things. She answers a call from Mia, saying she’ll be home soon. Meanwhile, Alf, Martha, Roo and Marilyn all wish Ryder a happy birthday and Roo thanks Ari for bringing him home. Ari quickly leaves as the others ask Ryder about the party and Chloe. Ryder says Chloe’s probably not coming and asks that they not talk about it. Roo sends him to get a shower before opening his presents.

Chloe and Theo arrive at the Parata house. Chloe tells Mia they got talking and lost track of time. Theo introduces himself but Mia ignores his offered hand. Theo leaves, passing Ari. Chloe says she’s going to bed but Ari reminds her she’s meant to be going to Ryder’s birthday lunch, saying Ryder has a right to try and fix things. Meanwhile, Marilyn has given a bemused Ryder a birth chart, which she notes says he’s a lovely person who can be relied on in a crisis. Ryder points out it also says he’s misunderstood and uncomfortable in social situations. Alf gives him a present from Quinn and he and Roo try asking about last night. Chloe turns up and Ryder looks pleased to see her, although things seem awkward as she takes a seat.

Leah and Justin are approaching the Diner, with him noting he’ll come back later. Theo sees them kissing and notes he had a good time at the party but Ryder got drunk and got in a fight with Chloe. He says Chloe’s cool and Justin notes Ryder thinks so too. As they head inside, Mackenzie runs into Tane, who says he’s trying to avoid Felicity. Mackenzie drags him upstairs to help move furniture around. Tane isn’t too keen that he’s helping Dean move in with Ziggy and tells her about Felicity ordering him out of the club. He points out Mackenzie kicked Felicity out of Salt but Mackenzie says that’s different. Tane notes he got a lecture from Alf on how to talk to women so it’s best he stays away. Mackenzie refuses to change her behaviour and says he shouldn’t either.

Mia and Ari are walking on the beach. Mia wonders how well Chloe knows Theo. Ari points out he’s Leah’s nephew. Mia notes she misses the days when she could pick Chloe up and carry her away. Ari gets a call from the adoption agency. He asks what the next step is and thanks them for letting him know. He tells Mia that the application’s been declined and she knows why. Meanwhile, there is awkward discussion about the food at the party dinner. Martha asks if there was many people at the party. Ryder says Chloe can answer that better than him and it looked like she was having a good time. The others try to move the conversation on, talking about the fundraiser, but Ryder asks about the hotel room Chloe booked and whether she slept with Theo.

Mackenzie and Tane are walking by the surf club and encounter Felicity who asks to talk to Tane. She wants him to promise not to come to her work place but Mackenzie says Felicity should follow her own advice and stay away from him. Felicity says it’s nothing to do with her and Mackenzie asks if she’s going to follow her to her car again. Felicity turns towards her and Tane steps in. Tane and Mackenzie go up to Salt. Tane worries they made things worse but Mackenzie says he can’t let Felicity tell him where to go. Down on the beach, Felicity calls Cash and asks if Jasmine’s sick of him yet. She seems upset that he’s not coming back until tomorrow afternoon but just says that they’ll talk then.

Theo is driving when he sees Chloe in tears. He pulls over and gives her a hug. Down on the pier, Alf is chiding Ryder for what he said. Ryder is upset that he’s ruined things with Chloe. Recalling when turning 21 meant becoming a man, Alf says he has a present for him. Ryder says Alf already bought him something and Alf replies that Martha bought it and put his name on the card. He gives Ryder an old compass, explaining he was given it by his father on his 21st and his father received it from his. He says it’s guided generations of Stewart men and Ryder is one in everything but name.

At the surf club, Chloe tells Theo that she doesn’t know what’s worse: Ryder thinking what he did or saying it in front of his family. Mia comes past and Chloe can see she’s upset so follows her out. Outside, Ari tells Mia that they can talk to the adoption lawyer and appeal. Chloe asks what’s going on and they tell her about the adoption being rejected.

Justin returns to see Leah at the Diner. Ryder enters and heads to Theo’s table. He tells him to stay away from him and Chloe but Theo is unimpressed. Ryder ends up lunging for Theo and Justin restrains him and takes him outside. Ryder walks off and Alf asks Justin what’s going on. Both of them think Theo’s trouble. Justin thinks Leah can’t deny it after this.
