93-108

So we begin our 2014 poll with a new host, which hopefully will go better than when Jim Davidson took over The Generation Game. As is traditional, this first section consists of those who only had one point, meaning they’re one person’s fifth favourite character.

93. Cheryl Braxton (1 point) ►NEW

Played by Suzi Dougherty
The Braxton matriarch, who has suffered from having a new personality in each appearance and disappearing for months at a time, but is at least liked by one person.

93= Chris Harrington (1 point) ►NEW

Played by Johnny Ruffo
A low showing for what I’ve considered one of the best new characters, who seems to be shaping up to be a decent lovable rogue type as well as creating most of the show’s best funny moments. Shame his girlfriends keep leaving him.

93= Colleen Smart (1 point) ▼12

Played by Lyn Collingwood
After over a decade as Home and Away’s resident battleaxe, gossip and judgemental busybody, Colleen finally slid off the show to the dismay of some and the relief of others…and slid to the bottom of the BTTB poll as well.

93= Denny Miller (1 point) ►NEW

Played by Jessica Grace Smith
One of the surprisingly few new characters introduced this year, Denny started off well but kind of self-destructed when the show tried to make her into the love of doomed Casey’s life without any real build-up. You know, like they did with Tamara the previous year

93= Elijah Johnson (1 point) ►NEW

Played by Jay Laga’aia
Now here’s a character I wasn’t expecting to be remembered: Elijah and Leah were meant to be the next big thing but weren’t, and after a fairly good return storyline giving him a marriage of convenience and ill stepson, he basically spent a year wandering around the caravan park asking to borrow light bulbs.

93= Freya Duric (1 point) ▼3

Played by Sophie Hensser
Ah, Freya. A two-week guest character from 2009, not really significant for anything other than inititiating the show’s first same sex kiss, but one person has voted for her in every poll since. Actually, given the lack of same sex relationships since, that’s probably more significant than it should be.

93= Josh West (1 point) ▲7

Played by Dan Collopy
And here’s Josh. Not the brooding Barrett body but Josh West, the rich kid turned good turned bad from a decade ago, who ended up having most of the town as suspects for shooting him dead.

93= Lance Smart (1 point) ▼34

Played by Peter Vroom
One half of the show’s original comedy double act, who disappeared off to the army with the other half after two years or so. Received the same number of votes as his mother, whose ascension to regular status a decade later provided plenty of scope for return appearances.

93= Lynn Davenport (1 point) ▼34

Played by Helena Bozich
The first of the original regulars to leave the show, written out after about six months when someone decided the Fletcher household was a bit over-crowded and they had three other girls. And has now gone down in history and still managed a point in this poll while characters who only appeared last year have been forgotten.

93= Maddy Osborne (1 point) ►NEW

Played by Kassandra Clementi
I voted for Maddy because I thought no-one else would. They didn’t. Her habit of going into a sulk every time her boyfriend cheats on her, or she has a year’s schoolwork written off because of one bad result, or Alf tells her to take the bins out obviously hasn’t endeared her to that many people. Maybe next time, eh?

93= Nicole Franklin (1 point) ▼80

Played by Tessa James
How quickly we forget. Last time round, Nicole was in the Top 20, now she’s in the first update, the biggest fall of any character in both polls. After dating both Geoff and Aden and becoming a stalwart of the caravan park crowd, her last few months, with the private adoption storyline and her happy ever after ending with a guy she hardly knew, possibly contributed to her being erased from most people’s minds.

93= Peta Bradley (1 point) ►NEW

Played by Nadia Townsend
Filling the gap between Sid and Nate was Doctor Peta, who became an instant hero by putting April in her place and dealing calmly with histrionics from everyone from Brax to Sally. Given she’s earned more points than several other characters introduced around that time, maybe she should have been kept on?

93= Rhys Sutherland (1 point) ►NEW

Played by Michael Beckley
In 2000, the Fletcher/Ross/Nash dynasty came to an end and a new family bought the caravan park, led by the frequently put-upon Rhys, who charmed people with his dry wit. Then the entire family were written out one by one in the space of a few months, with Rhys becoming public enemy number one by leaving his second wife for his first.

93= Romeo Smith (1 point) ▲7

Played by Luke Mitchell
Romeo only got one point last time and he only got one point this time, so at least he’s consistent. After three and a half years as the show’s affable love rat, Romeo had an off screen death so Luke Mitchell could go to the States and star in a post-watershed show based on a 1970s ITV children’s series. Luke’s next project: A sexier and more violent remake of Rainbow.

93= Sarah Lewis (1 points)▼26

Played by Luisa Hastings-Edge
Either someone really hated Noah Lawson or they appreciated Sarah’s descent from, um, psycho stalker to drug-crazed gunwoman. Died during the armed siege that formed the 2004 Olympic cliffhanger, although as we only found that out in a throwaway line there’s still occasional debate as to how.

93= Scruffy (1 points) ◄RETURN

Played by a Border Collie
The Campbell farm dog, whose perils seemed to gain more interest at the time than the latest round of “Will Jack and Martha get back together?” Left town with Jonah/Michael but reappeared out of nowhere when Martha bought the farm, only to disappear again soon afterwards.

And so there we have the least loved Home and Away characters, but at least they’re loved by someone. Harvey and Natalie, two then-current characters who didn’t get a vote in the last poll, didn’t get a vote this time either, and a staggering six members of the current cast who were eligible to be voted for weren’t. See if you can guess who they are.
