Extended Summary

Tane arrives home and is greeted by Nikau, who claims to have made him lunch (although it appears to be his own lunch). After asking him about the interviews for a new gym instructor, he asks if he’s given any thoughts to best man. Tane says he was thinking of asking Dean, before putting Nikau out of his misery and saying of course it’s him. Outside the Lyrik house, Theo and Kirby are practising interview questions on each other. Theo wonders if they should mention Bob quitting but Kirby says Bob won’t be listening and it’s a great story. Theo half-jokingly refers to Kirby as their super hot keyboardist.

Roo tries to convince Marilyn that she wants a fresh start, and having tried tutoring she wants to do something else, although she’s at a loss when Marilyn asks her what exactly she’s going to do. Alf comes out and Marilyn tells him Roo wants to quit because of Heather. Alf says he agrees with Marilyn. Meanwhile, Nikau joins Tane outside and wonders why he took so long to ask him to be best man. Tane says Nikau was busy helping Marilyn and it was good that he did. Nikau is shocked that Tane’s heading into work, saying he was hoping they’d discuss wedding preparations: He’s found Gemma’s e-mail. Tane says all Nikau needs to do is organise the bucks night, write a speech and be point man on the day.

Theo nervously announces five minutes until the interview. Kirby tries to reassure him as he worries about looking like an idiot. Kirby says he did that with his online pranks. Theo wonders if Remi and Eden should be there and Kirby says they’re busy and told them to go ahead. They answer a call from the DJ, Knoxy.

Felicity tells Mackenzie their options for the first aid course: They can close for the day and get everyone to do the course then or try and get them to do it in their free time, although that would mean paying them. Mackenzie is distracted and explains Xander called to say David had died. Felicity says they’ll all do the course.

Kirby and Theo celebrate the end of the interview; Kirby congratulates Theo, who says he couldn’t have done it without her. The radio station is playing their song at the end of the show. Theo has to get to work at the garage but Kirby says they have a bit more time to celebrate. As they kiss, Bob appears and says he hopes he’s not interrupting.

At the surf club, Nikau tells Tane that Cash is organising the cars but they have to organise a new suit for him. Tane protests he already has one but Nikau insists on getting another one. Tane has decided on the new instructor so needs to write rejection e-mails. Felicity appears and is pleased Tane put Nikau out of his misery, before explaining about the guy from last night dying and how Mackenzie’s blaming herself.

Inside the house, Kirby asks Bob why he’s there when she said she didn’t want to see him. Bob said he just wanted to congratulate them and always said they should shoot a video. Kirby says he didn’t and Bob bemoans that no-one ever listened to him. Theo asks if he’s just there to give backhanded compliments. Bob says they’re genuine and he wanted to speak to Kirby alone. Theo tells Kirby he can get Ziggy to cover him but Kirby says she’ll be all right.

Marilyn chats to Alf about how evasive Roo was. Roo comes out and guesses they were talking about her, saying she’s often changed jobs in the past. She says she doesn’t want to talk about it and Marilyn gives in and leaves. Roo tells Alf that she believed everything Heather said and doesn’t think she can go on if she’s that bad a judge of character.

Nikau joins Mackenzie on the beach and tells her he heard what happened. He reflects on feeling responsible for someone’s life and recalls John told him to prepare for everything. He says no-one knows how they’ll react in a crisis until it happens. Meanwhile, Kirby continues to ask Bob why he’s there. Bob reminds her she said they could talk. Kirby says she cancelled. Bob asks if “Rebound Guy” objected. Kirby says Theo’s not a rebound. Bob says he hasn’t been with anyone since her and asks her to look him in the eye and say she’s happy. Kirby does, but Bob still thinks he’s getting under her skin.

Marilyn, Alf and Roo all gather outside. Roo says she’s found a data entry job she can do at home. Alf doesn’t think she’ll be able to handle shutting herself away on her own to work. Marilyn says Roo has a gift for teaching and reminds her what she said to her about giving herself a second chance. She suggests Roo call the guy back and make herself available for tutoring. Roo sighs and does so.

Mackenzie returns to Salt and tells Felicity she thinks she overreacted by saying all staff should learn first aid: They’ll find out who’s interested but Mackenzie is definitely doing it. Felicity joins Tane and Nikau, who asks about their reception. Felicity says they’re going to have it on the beach. Nikau looks horrified and says he’ll add it to his “to do” list. Tane and Felicity retreat, slightly bemused, although Felicity says it’ll save her the work.

Theo is listening to the radio at the garage and hears the song being announced. He calls out, then realises there’s no-one there. He calls Kirby and leaves a voicemail message saying she’s missing out. Outside Lyrik’s house, Kirby says Bob isn’t getting under her skin. Bob says he invited Kirby to come with him and accuses her of having her eye on Theo all along, before asking why she agreed to meet him. Kirby says she wanted closure. Bob suggests he wants that too.

Outside the Parata house, Tane finds Nikau on the phone. Nikau complains about how expensive receptions are and how everything’s booked up a year in advance. Tane is slightly freaked out by how obsessed Nikau is and asks what it’s about. Nikau says he know that if Ari or Mikaere were there, one of them would be best man, and he wants to make them and Tane proud.

A reluctant Kirby arrives at Salt with Bob. He says all relationships have their ups and downs. Kirby says she’s only had one fight with Theo. Felicity greets Bob in a faux cheery manner, asking if he’s there to suck the fun out of everything again. Kirby reminds Bob that he let them all down and he says that musicians are unreliable. Kirby makes to go but Bob says he regrets losing her. He starts to say he wants her back, then corrects it to he needs her back.
