Xander’s first date ends in disaster. Mackenzie freezes in a crisis. Can Marilyn revive Roo’s tutoring confidence?

Extended Summary

Dean and Mackenzie run into each other outside the surf club. Dean is taking pizza home to Ziggy. Mackenzie reflects on looking forward to a busy night and tries to convince Dean to come back and keep her company. Up in Salt, Xander tries to get Rose to leave. Rose says she’s not going to cramp his style but is still there when Stacey turns up. They are briefly introduced before Rose goes to the bar and tells Mackenzie to send another round over to the pair. A nearby customer seems confused that his glass is empty and Mackenzie offers to get him a water. Stacey tells Xander it’s her first time in Salt. Xander automatically says it’s his too, then admits he eats there all the time and is a bit rusty at first dates.

Rose has returned to the Diner flat, where she looks through the profiles on Smoulder without much enthusiasm, finding faulty with all of them and rejecting them. She notes it looks like she’s eating on her own…then changes her mind when she checks the fridge. Downstairs, Justin says goodbye to Leah: He has to see Mackenzie about a gig since he promised Ziggy he’d do it after work hours, which Leah is a bit concerned about. Alf, Marilyn and Roo arrive and are greeted by Irene and Leah. Marilyn talks about how it’s good to get back into a routine and asks Roo if she’s looking forward to getting back into tutoring. Roo says she hasn’t really thought about it and quickly changes the subject.

Justin suggests a film behind the band or lasers for the next gig but Mackenzie says they don’t have a projector or lasers. The customer from earlier asks for another beer. Mackenzie suggests he’s had enough but he says he’s only had one beer so she agrees, telling Justin she’s keeping an eye on him. Nearby, Stacey tells Xander she hadn’t been in the surf club before he asked her out. Xander says he did it because he lost a bet then realises that sounds bad and assures her he wanted to ask her out, he just needed a nudge.

Marilyn announces she wants to go back to the city and work on the food truck. Alf isn’t keen but Roo thinks it’s a good idea so he backs down. Leah comes over with their orders. Roo checks her phone and says she’s got an enquiry about tutoring. Alf suggests calling them back but Roo says she doesn’t want the food to get cold. Rose comes in and chats to Irene and Leah about Xander’s date.

Xander asks Stacey what she does for work. Stacey says she’s an exotic dancer, then says she was joking and is between jobs at the moment. Xander says he was wondering where an exotic dancer would find work in Summer Bay. At the bar, Mackenzie is trying to get the customer from earlier to leave, saying she’ll get him a cab, when he suddenly collapses to the floor, out cold. Xander rushes to help and Justin keeps the crowds back. Xander asks what happened; Mackenzie is just staring in shock so Justin answers. Xander says to call an ambulance. Mackenzie continues to stare so Stacey does it.

Xander and Stacey bring the customer, David, up to the emergency department in a wheelchair. A doctor greets them and Xander tells her David refused an ambulance and deteriorated in the car. They take him through to resus, with Xander apologising to Stacey and saying she doesn’t need to wait.

Alf, Marilyn and Roo finish their meal. While Alf pays, Marilyn suggests Roo call the tutoring candidate back. Roo says what happened with Heather has put a damper on things. Marilyn says Heather used her. Roo says Marilyn tried to warn her. Marilyn says not to stop it doing her something she loved. Justin comes in and tells Leah and Irene about the customer collapsing.

Xander watches David get wheeled off before rejoining Stacey. She guesses it was a stroke, explaining she used to be a nurse while Xander explains he’s a paramedic. He suggests they go for a drink but Stacey says she’ll take a cab because she has a big day tomorrow. Xander leans in towards her but she just says goodbye as the lift door closes between them.

Xander arrives home and Rose asks him how it went. Xander says Stacey is nice and wasn’t turned off by his sister being a psychopath but explains about the man collapsing. He thinks Stacey isn’t in to him: He asked her for a drink but she went home. At the farm house, Mackenzie is downloading to Dean, saying she missed the signs and tried to put David in a car home, where he could have died. She worries that she froze up.

Next morning, Xander and Rose are on the balcony at Salt. Rose wants him to call Stacey but Xander thinks it was the worst date of her life. Rose says at least he’s back on the horse, whereas the only person on the app who wanted to date her is nearly a hundred and still married. Mackenzie comes over and asks about David. Xander tells her it was probably a stroke and she insists he doesn’t need to pay. Rose tries to reassure her she couldn’t have done anything.

Downstairs, Dean and Xander chat about Mackenzie blaming herself. Xander bumps into Stacey who says she wanted to go for a drink with him but actually did have a big day and thinks he was amazing. She adds that there was something she forgot to do and kisses him on the cheek before heading to the gym, telling him to call her.

Mackenzie turns up at the hospital with flowers. Running into Xander, she asks him to point her towards David. Xander says he’s in ICU in an induced coma and it’s not looking good. At the Diner, Justin tries to convince Irene to go to Lyrik’s gig. Leah doesn’t think it would be Irene’s thing. Alf comes in and Justin tries to convince him too. They both turn him down, although Leah says she wouldn’t miss it. Irene quips about Leah thinking he was burning out.

Xander and Mackenzie arrive back at Salt. Mackenzie wonders if she could have done anything more. Xander says she followed RSA rules and David would have had a stroke whatever she did. Mackenzie feels bad about freezing so Xander tells her to get the knowledge and experience to be ready next time. Mackenzie thanks him, then calls Felicity and says she needs everyone together for a staff meeting. Felicity runs into Tane outside the house and tells him about Mackenzie’s call. Tane has been interviewing people for a job. Felicity says she always lied on her CV but she’s ended up as a business owner.

Felicity meets with Mackenzie at Salt. Mackenzie tells her what happened last night and says she needs all staff to do a first aid course so they’re ready for next time. She asks Felicity to find out who hasn’t got a certificate, including them. Felicity reveals she already has a certificate, since she was offered one at a previous job.

Marilyn joins Roo outside the house and is pleased to see her doing work. Roo admits she’s e-mailing the guy who contacted her to say she can’t take him on: She’s shutting the business down. Marilyn replies that she’s not going to let her quit.
