Justin struggles with his reality. Christian makes a bad choice. Roo and Marilyn rally around their friend.
Extended Summary
Christian is accompanying Rachel on a walk around the hospital, with her commenting on her lack of peripheral vision. Seeing Leah, Tori and Jasmine chatting ahead, Christian goes over to join them. Jasmine helps Rachel back to ICU. Tori goes to call Doctor Singh while Leah explains that Justin bought some painkillers online. Christian goes to talk to Justin, who isn’t impressed with the idea of him as a replacement doctor. Christian says he’s heard there’s been some issues with his medication. Justin reiterates that his pain specialist is useless and he had no other option, saying the first batch was fine so it must have been a bad batch. Christian says that’s the risk but Justin insists he’s fine now it’s out of his system. Christian notices Justin’s hands are shaking but Justin says that’s the pain. Christian refuses to get him anything.
Marilyn brings Roo a coffee outside the bait shop. Roo is grateful for the caffeine, admitting that the early starts are hard and she underestimated the workload. Alf appears and says he’s not in the mood for fishing. He refuses to tell them about Justin or let them phone Leah, saying she has enough on her plate, although he does say she’s going to need her friends. At the gym, Ari is helping Mia clear up and suggests they go to a restaurant in Yabbie Creek. Mia says she’s not in the mood and is worried they’re pushing Chloe away. Ari tries to assure her that things will work out.
Jasmine is settling Rachel in her room and admits that her shift’s over but she doesn’t have anywhere else to go. Rachel asks about Tori and is confident Christian will sort it. She seems disappointed on hearing the physio will look after her from now on but convinces Jasmine to stay and watch TV with her. Meanwhile, Christian tells Tori and Leah about Justin asking him for a prescription. Tori isn’t impressed that he said nothing. Christian explains he recommended scans and Justin said he’d have them after the wedding. Tori acidly retorts that the wedding never happened and accuses Christian of being too focused on his voyage of discovery to pay attention. Justin appears, trying to leave the hospital, and ends up pinning Christian against a wall before passing out. He is helped back into bed and insists he’d have been okay if they hadn’t stopped him. Christian says he wouldn’t have made it to the car park and convinces him to stay and see Doctor Singh, who he explains is a pain specialist. Tori is disgusted that Justin only seems interested in someone who can give him pain relief. Justin orders them all out.
Ari and Mia arrive home. Mia finds a post-it note from Chloe saying she’s staying at Ryder’s. Ari doesn’t think that’s unusual but Mia worries she’s avoiding them. Mia heads straight to bed. At the hospital, Tori convinces Leah to go home out of the firing line. Christian tells Tori that Doctor Singh’s with Jutstin. Tori apologises for blaming him. Christian says they have to make sure Justin’s clear of toxins. He advises Tori to go home and spend time with Grace, saying he’ll stay and keep an eye on Justin.
Alf, Marilyn and Roo are all still at the Diner when Leah turns up. She says she’s just been walking and Justin’s not okay. After exchanging a look with Alf, she tells the others that Justin overdosed on pain medication and is addicted. The others reassure her it’s not her fault. At the hospital, Christian is sitting by a sleeping Justin. He sees Rachel walking around and she explains she couldn’t sleep. Christian decides to walk her back to ICU, asking Freya to keep an eye on Justin for a few minutes. He settles Rachel in her room and explains that Justin is his soon-to-be-brother-in-law. He ends up sitting down to talk to her.
Next morning, Mia is setting up a class near the beach. She tells Jasmine she didn’t have to help her. Ari appears and says he’s going to take Mia away. Mia protests that she has work, then realises Jasmine’s in on it. Jasmine explains Tane is covering the rest of Mia’s shift. Mia and Ari drive off on his bike. At the hospital, Tori finds Christian asleep by Rachel’s bedside and demands to know why he’s there instead of with Justin: The hospital called her to let her know that Justin disappeared during the night. She isn’t exactly mollified by Rachel saying it was her fault.
Alf has called Leah after seeing Justin sitting on the beach, noting he wasn’t exactly good at hiding. Leah goes and sits next to Justin, who says he had to get out of there and doesn’t want to go back. He continues to insist he’s not an addict and has been dealing with pain for months, trying to get through every day, and that’s why he lost it. He wants to go home but Leah reminds him that there isn’t any medication there and he needs to go back to hospital to get it sorted. Soon after, Tori is on the phone to Leah at the hospital. Rachel approaches but Tori isn’t happy to see her there and demands to know what she and Christian talk about. Christian steps in, pointedly asking for a word.
Roo finishes serving a customer at the bait shop. Alf appears and they discuss the situation with Justin. Alf also tells her Martha’s doctors have called and want a family meeting to discuss her coming home. Meanwhile, Christian summons Tori into the office and asks why she’s having a go at his patient, calling it unprofessional. Tori reminds him he sat with Rachel instead of Justin and wants to know why he talks to Rachel instead of her. Christian says he’s tried to explain and Tori says she’s tried to understand. Desperately, she asks what she’s supposed to do. Christian just looks at her helplessly and Tori leaves.
