Extended Summary

Ari approaches Mia at the surf club, taking her bag and asking if there’s something she wants to tell him. After he’s dropped enough hints, Mia realises he knows about the pregnancy test. On the pier, Chloe checks that’s definitely what Ryder found and explains it’s Mia’s. Ryder is intrigued by the idea of her being a big sister but Chloe tells him about Mia’s miscarriages and Kauri dying, noting that’s when everything went wrong: She can’t believe they’re doing it again. Ryder advises her to talk to them.

Tori sees Justin being brought into the hospital by Leah and the ambulance staff. One of the ambulance officers reels off a list of details, including the fact that there’s no sign of external trauma. Leah tells Tori that Justin was fine when she last spoke to him and she didn’t notice any fumes or chemicals at the garage. Justin starts fitting. At the Diner, Marilyn fills Alf and Roo in. Alf decides to go to the hospital to check on Justin while Roo goes back to the bait shop.

Ari and Mia arrive home. Mia says she bought the test for the future. Ari checks the box and notes it says it’s accurate after a week or two, and they’ve been trying for a month. Mia agrees to use it to satisfy her own curiosity. Ari tries to follow her into the bathroom and she says she can do this bit on her own. Some time later, they hear a timer go off and check the test: It’s negative. Chloe arrives home and asks why they kept it from her, saying they can’t remember last time if they’re doing it again: She recalls hearing Mia crying during the night. Chloe disappears into her room. Ari says he’ll talk to her.

Leah wonders why Justin isn’t waking up and Tori says he’s in a deep sleep after the fit. She wonders if he could be taking something other than painkillers. Leah says he’s not even taking them since last week, explaining about him taking too much and saying his GP took him off them, and wondering if stopping suddenly caused it. Tori says it’s more likely he took something but there was nothing in his pockets so they need to find out what. Justin has another seizure. Leah runs into Alf and gets him to give her a lift to the garage. She breaks into the locked cupboard and finds several bottles of pills, She and Alf grab them.

Soon after, at the hospital, Alf wonders why a doctor would have prescribed the pills. Tori doesn’t think they’re from a doctor since she’s never heard of them: The active ingredients are the same as what Justin’s been taking but there might be something toxic in there, so it’s been sent to the lab. Leah urges Tori to do something and Tori says she can give him narcan, although she’s not sure it will help. At the Diner, Marilyn and Roo check with each other if there’s any news. Roo sits with Ryder, who says Chloe has family business. He wonders if it’s also his business. Roo tells him to text her and he sends one saying “Here if you want me.”

Ari and Chloe walk in a park area. Ari says they would have told her once there was something to tell. Chloe is incredulous at the idea of them excitedly telling her great news and then having to tell her different news a few months later, asking why they’re putting themselves through this again. Ari says it might be their only chance to have a child of their own. Hurt, Chloe says that she’s not his so doesn’t fit into their fantasy family. Ari goes back to Mia at the gym and admits he messed up, not realising Chloe was still griving. They decide they need to have the talk with her they should have had at the start.

Justin is starting to come round but is still groggy. Leah, Tori and Alf are all around him, with the bottles of pills lined up. Tori demands to know where he got them from. Justin tries claiming he’s never seen them before but Tori presses him angrily, while Leah takes a gentler approach. Alf ends up leading Tori away and Justin tells Leah to go too. Tori thanks Alf and he says to call him if they need anything. Meanwhile, Ari, Mia and Chloe have met up at Salt. Chloe is still worried, saying Mia and pregnancies don’t work, despite having her. She thinks it’ll just lead to misery and them being torn apart. Ari and Mia say they’ve talked over the worst case scenario and won’t let it split them up. They ask for her support and she agrees.

Chloe meets Ryder at the Diner and gives him a hug. He suggests being a sister could be the best thing that’s happened to her. Chloe says Ryder is. Ryder tells her he’d have stood by her if she had been pregnant but Chloe says she’s not going to have children. Alf comes in and Marilyn and Roo ask him for news. Alf says Justin’s come round and is being looked after, and it’s not his place to say any more. At the hospital, Justin first tries to get Leah to leave, then asks her to help him get out of there. Tori approaches and says he has to stay for observation. Justin argues that she can’t keep him there. Tori says if he tries to leave she’ll call the police.

Ari finds Mia sitting in their bedroom. Mia wonders if Chloe’s right: They thought they were indestructible ten years ago and losing Kauri tore them apart, so maybe they should be happy with what they’ve got. Ari asks how that makes her feel and Mia admits she’s sad, like she was when the test was negative. They consider maybe this is their time. Meanwhile, Justin dares Tori to make the call. Tori says she won’t lose another brother or let Ava lose a father, and he might have died if Leah hadn’t found him. Justin denies that he’s addicted. Leah tries to get him to let Tori look after him but Justin says he wants her replaced as his doctor.
