Mackenzie is rushed into hospital. The truth comes as a shock to Mia. Alf battles the aftermath of Susie.
Extended Summary
Ziggy and Tane are dropped off by a taxi outside the Parata house. They discuss Mackenzie wanting space and how hard the day’s going to be for her. Tane reminds her that going out clubbing was only meant to be step one of them making up and says he’ll show her what comes next if she comes inside. Meanwhile, Mackenzie is still lying on the floor at the farm house. She attempts to crawl to the surface where her phone is lying but passes out again.
At the surf club, Alf tells Roo and Marilyn that the police are still investigating but there’s no sign of Susie. They’ve frozen the surf club accounts but no-one knows where the sponsorship money is. Alf is frustrated at the lack of help from John. Dean, who has been listening in, asks if the surf competition is going ahead. Alf gives a blunt answer and Roo tells him they don’t know; Dean says to let him know if he can help. Meanwhile, Mackenzie reaches the phone and manages to call Dean, but only manages to say his name before passing out. Dean tries to call someone.
Mia brings Ari a coffee: He is now sitting by his bed. She offers to take him for a walk later. Ari is hoping to be discharged today. Mia notes there’s no-one to look after him there and Ari says there will be if she moves in. Mia hugs him. Meanwhile, Dean has arrived at the farm house but finds both doors locked. He looks through the window and sees Mackenzie lying on the floor. He kicks the door down and rushes to her side. She stirs slightly and he calls an ambulance.
Alf and Roo are looking through the paperwork from the donations Susie’s arranged. Alf thinks they should call round them. Marilyn points out the police are still investigating. Alf says some are regular donors and he and Roo decide to split them up. Nearby, Tane is preparing to take Ziggy up to Salt for breakfast but Ziggy is dithering over whether or not to check in with Mac. Tane ends up taking the phone from her. At the hospital, Tori greets Dean as he arrives with Mackenzie. Dean explains he found her unconscious but can’t say how long she was out for or how many weeks pregnant she is. While Tori examines her, he leaves a message for Ziggy. Ari and Mia then appear and see him. Ari wonders why he’s there.
Ziggy and Tane have finished their meal and are given the bill. Tane checks his wallet and finds he has no cash. Ziggy says she can pay, even though she paid for the taxi and most of the drinks. Tane says with the situation with the police sorted, he should look for a job. Ziggy takes her phone and discovers the message from Dean. At the hospital, Dean has accompanied Ari and Mia back to Ari’s room. Ari thanks Dean for coming to see him but wonders why he was in Emergency. Dean claims he was lost but Ari is suspicious, even sending Mia away so they can talk in private. Tane arrives and sees Dean there, saying Ziggy was looking for him. Tane also plays innocent with Ari. Dean meets Ziggy in Emergency and fills her in. Mackenzie is brought past and Tori explains she needs emergency surgery: The pregnancy was ectopic and the tube has ruptured. She asks about the father and Dean says the father doesn’t know. Ziggy reassures him.
Alf and Roo join Marilyn at the Diner and note most of the people they’ve spoken to haven’t been particularly happy. Alf is worried about losing trust. He gets a call from Gus at the hardware store and tells the women the store’s been onto a lawyer and is threatening to sue them for misappropriating funds. Shortly after, Alf is finishing a phone call to a lawyer outside the Diner. He tells Marilyn and Roo they’d have no chance of winning a court case: Their only options are to hand the money back (which they can’t do) or run the competition to fulfill their obligation to their sponsors. However, they don’t know if they have the funds, so need to get hold of John.
Ziggy is feeling guilty about leaving Mackenzie alone. Tane joins her and Dean and assures them he didn’t tell Ari. Tori appears as Mackenzie is brought through. Dean chats to Mackenzie as she is taken into a room. Mia sees them and asks Ziggy and Tane what’s going on. They try and dismiss her questions but Mia presses, saying she’ll tell Ari. Despite a warning look from Ziggy, Tane tells her Mackenzie lost a baby. Mia realises it was Ari’s. Tane says she can’t tell him. In the room, Tori tells Mackenzie she lost the baby and they had to remove the tube. She explains to her and Dean that Mackenzie can still have children: It might happen again but they know to monitor. Dean tries to comfort Mackenzie but she asks him to go so she can rest.
Ziggy and Tane chat at the surf club. Tane wonders if he did the right thing telling Mia. Ziggy says he was backed into a corner and they hope she won’t tell Ari. Dean arrives and tells them that Mackenzie wants to be alone: He thinks it hasn’t sunk in yet. At the hospital, Mia checks on Mackenzie and agrees not to tell Ari. She offers to be there if Mackenzie wants to talk, saying she knows how it feels. Mackenzie says Mia doesn’t know what it’s like to go through it alone and that she’d already decided not to go through with the pregnancy, telling her to go.
Alf finishes off a phone call before complaining that the surf club fell apart the minute he took his eyes off it. The police have unfrozen the account but they can’t access it for twenty-four hours. He and Roo note John is the only person other than Susie who knows everything and Alf says he’ll have to come back. Marilyn says she’ll call Jett. Meanwhile, Mia rejoins Ari, who is doing his physio with stretches. Although she tries to plaster on a smile, Ari can tell something’s wrong. Mia denies it but Ari says they shouldn’t start again with secrets.
