Yates was the man from the Education Department who was sent to Summer Bay to investigate claims that Kirsty had had a relationship with Trey and that Miles had assaulted him. He interviewed the parties alongside Martin Bartlett; Trey stayed calm in repeating his allegations, with John mentioning that Jai had attacked him. In contrast, Miles and Kirsty both became defensive when questioned. Miles insisted he had only grabbed Trey’s arm because he thought he was a threat to Kirsty but Yates pointed out that whatever the reason, he had dislocated a student’s shoulder.
