Extended Summary
Roscoe continues to hold an uncomfortable Mackenzie tight to him as the hostages drive on. Todd snaps at Ziggy and Mackenzie to shut up as they offer them money or the car to let them go. Roscoe tells Ziggy to keep her eyes front. Back at the car park, Levi is unable to get a phone signal, not even for 000. Dean tells him to keep an eye out and warn him if anyone comes, despite Levi thinking they want someone to come. After trying some cars, Dean smashes the window of one and, to Levi’s consternation, starts trying to hotwire it.
Down on the beach, Justin, Kirby and Bree have just finished a surf. Justin shows Kirby the details of the studio he thinks is best. Kirby isn’t sure she’ll be able to pay Remi back but Bree tells her she’s doing him a favour since it takes his mind off what happened with Sonny. Justin asks what did happen, explaining Sonny spent the night at theirs but wouldn’t talk about it. Bree says Remi will tell him eventually. Kirby gets a message from Remi wanting to meet. Up at Salt, Remi chats to Eden about Cash getting his rank back and Mackenzie being away. He notes he’s meeting Justin and Kirby. Eden calls them two other band members and Remi says there isn’t a band. The pair turn up before he can explain further.
Later, Eden serves Justin, Kirby and Remi as Remi says they should do an album instead of an EP. Eden asks why they’re talking about an album if Lyrik’s dead. Justin says Kirby’s going solo, getting a pained look from Kirby as they all apologise to Eden that it happened suddenly. Eden says she’s fine and they carry on talking without her, with Remi offering to be Kirby’s producer and her happily agreeing. Eden says she’ll leave them to it. Remi follows Eden outside and wonders if she’s angry with him. Eden says they had a band they could do all this with and it feels like everyone else is moving on.
Levi has run down the road, trying to get a signal. Dean pulls up next to him, having got the stolen car started. When Dean threatens to leave him, Levi reluctantly gets in. At the coffee cart, Rose explains to Irene that it’s her last shift and she’s been sent out on patrol. Bree arrives and Irene thanks them for geeing her up last night, saying she feels more like herself today. Rose and Bree walk away and Rose explains no-one wants her to take on a case she can’t finish, so she’s spending her last shift by herself. Bree suggests someone might commit a heinous crime.
Levi asks Dean how he knows they’re going the right way. Dean says the other way leads back into town: The men were in prison green and are obviously running. Levi suggests they might have just got paroled and Dean says you take your uniform off when released. Levi turns the radio on, hoping to get news, and they immediately hear a report identifying the two men as 26-year-old Todd Reinhardt and 35-year-old Roscoe Mulhern, who escaped from a prison transport during a transfer. The report adds the public should not approach since Mulhern is serving a life sentence for murder and is considered highly dangerous. Meanwhile, Roscoe continues to get handsy with Mackenzie, noting he’s been in a cage for fifteen years and is admiring the view. Todd warns Ziggy not to slow down but they see the police setting up a road block ahead. Roscoe directs Ziggy to drive down a dirt track before they reach it.
Kirby approaches Eden as she returns to the surf club, wondering if she’s upset. Eden insists she’s happy for her but admits she thought Lyrik would get back together. Kirby says she thought that too. Eden says she obviously got over it, then apologises. Later, up in Salt, Kirby tells Justin and Remi that while she likes the idea of a full album, it would mean writing twice as many songs. Justin has thought of this but has an idea: They buy her songs back off Forrest. Kirby isn’t sure he’d go for it but agrees to him asking. At the bar, Bree talks to Eden before joining the others at the table. Remi also approaches and apologises for being harsh. Bree asks Kirby if she’s free for the next few hours.
Ziggy pulls over, saying she’s pregnant and needs to be sick. Mackenzie goes with her, with Roscoe warning them to stay in sight of the car. Ziggy quietly confirms to Mackenzie that she’s three months and says they need to stall the pair until Dean catches up with them. Roscoe tells Todd they’ll have to ditch the car: He has a mate waiting with another one at the border. He also makes it clear he doesn’t intend to leave witnesses, which makes Todd nervous. Roscoe calls the women back.
Further back, Dean insists the escapees are heading for the border. Levi thinks he and Dean are out of their depth, saying Dean might be tougher than him but it doesn’t make him tougher than them. He adds that Mackenzie told him Dean was in a gang but not that he was an idiot. They see the road block ahead. Levi thinks it’s a chance to get help but Dean starts reversing, saying they’re two guys in a stolen car and he can’t spend time answering questions. He heads down the dirt track.
Remi follows Eden downstairs at the surf club. Eden says she’s feeling directionless: Remi’s producing, Theo’s got his cars, Cash is moving up the ranks and Kirby has her solo career, while the highlight of her day is counting tips from waiting tables, which was only meant to be a stop-gap. Remi says Kirby will need some bass tracks and suggests Eden come in with them but Eden says she doesn’t want to be a session muso, even though she doesn’t know what she wants. Meanwhile, Kirby and Bree turn up at the police station and, despite Rose protesting that she’s not due a break, insist she comes to lunch with them.
The car passes a sign saying 205km to the next petrol station. Roscoe tells Ziggy to pull over. Ziggy notices how nervous Todd is looking and says the police will blame him for anything Roscoe does to them. Todd says he’s not a murderer and throws himself out of the vehicle. A panicking Roscoe tells Ziggy to keep going, threatening Mackenzie.
Not too far away, Dean is beginning to doubt his decisions as they pass the same sign and thinks they should have stopped and spoken to the police. He tells Levi that Ziggy’s pregnant and Levi congratulates him. Dean says Ziggy and Mackenzie need him and Levi says he needs Mackenzie. They are about to turn round when Levi spots an injured Todd staggering along beside the road. Dean tackles him to the ground and stands on his injured leg. Levi intervenes, pointing out he won’t tell them anything if he’s unconscious. He guesses who Todd is and Dean realises that means the women are with a murderer. Levi tells Todd he’s a doctor and can help him if he tells them what they want to know. Otherwise, he’ll let Dean loose on him.
