Mali makes an important decision. Cash gets a heartbreaking letter. Justin spins a web of lies.

Extended Summary

Outside the surf club, Kirby is enthusiastic about Mali’s offer. Mali is more subdued though, feeling the guy is expecting a real artist and he’s only done one piece, and has decided to tell him he doesn’t want to meet. At the Newman house, Cash is lying on his bed. John turns up and says Marilyn insisted he make another food drop. He has also brought Cash’s post in. He asks about Salt and Cash tells him about his decision to step back. John approves, noting he gets the benefits of being a partner without having to do any work. Cash trails off as he opens one of the letters: It’s from Ultimate Gift, the people who handled Felicity’s organ donation, and one of the recipients has reached out to him.

At Salt, Rose is telling Xander that she wishes she could do more to help Tane but Carl is denying everything and she hopes the court case will be over soon. Kirby comes up and recalls Rose dated Mali. Rose retorts that Kirby dated his brother. Kirby wonders how you get Mali to do something he doesn’t want to, explaining about the gallery offer.

Rose heads downstairs where Mali is taking selfies of himself with the certificate, explaining Victoria wants to see it. Rose tells him she heard about the art gallery offer and encourages him to meet the guy. Kirby comes down as well and adds her own voice. Mali isn’t impressed however, telling Kirby to close up because he’s going home.

Theo turns up at the coffee cart and tells Leah he only needs one coffee because Justin didn’t stay at the garage for long. He says Justin’s been in and out for days and wonders if he’s still mad at him about Claudia’s accident. Leah thinks he should be mad at Claudia and considers the matter sorted. Meanwhile, Justin is picking up Claudia and is bemused that she wanted to meet in the middle of nowhere rather than at her house. She insists on sitting in the back, saying she needs room for her paperwork. Justin wonders what her job is and she says she does home assessments for veterans. She senses he thinks the job requires patience and kindness and says she puts up walls to protect herself which can make her seem cold, as her husband points out. Her client today is struggling. Justin recalls Jett coming home paraplegic.

Staring at the blank envelope, Cash tells John he was told at the hospital about correspondence but wasn’t expecting it so soon. The covering letter says that five people had Felicity’s organs successfully transplanted into them. Later, John checks the letter and notes Cash is under no obligation to read it and can even send it back. Cash opens the letter and starts reading it out loud. The recipient says she was born with a heart defect and could have dropped dead at any time without a heart and lung transplant. He falters and John takes over the reading with the recipent saying she has a chance to live, travel, go to uni and be a mum. She feels bad that someone had to die and says she’ll always be grateful.

In Salt, Kirby tries to get Rose to try again with Mali. Rose thinks Kirby might be right about him having low self-esteem but says she’s out. Xander asks why Kirby doesn’t just leave Mali alone. Kirby says this might be what Mali is meant to do with his life. Xander accepts the point. Meanwhile, Justin is taking Claudia back from her appointment.; she says she made a breakthrough with the client. She wonders if Justin could take her to Yabbie Creek for a coffee but he has to get back. She gets a call from her husband, Eric, which quickly becomes heated as she says she can work but not drive. She gets Justin to pull over as she gets out to continue the conversation.

John and Cash discuss the letter. Cash wants to find out more about the woman and tell her about Felicity. John says Cash can write letters and they’ll be passed on but he can’t meet her face to face: All correspondence has to be anonymous. Meanwhile, Justin asks Claudia if her husband is a problem. Claudia says not in the way he means. Eric has to do more at home since she injured her arm: He’s struggled since he lost his job and relies on her a lot. She didn’t tell him Justin was driving her because he asked her a lot of questions last time he saw them together.

Kirby turns up at the farm house to see Mali, who hopes it’s about something other than the art gallery. Kirby asks why he’s so determined not to get involved. Mali says he only did one painting and it happened because he was in a dark place and he doesn’t want to go back there. Kirby suggests painting can come from joy as well. Later, Mali gets off the phone and tells Kirby he’s arranged a meeting. Kirby tells him not to sign a contract until he’s been over it with a lawyer. She also tells him not to accept the first offer and maybe shop around. Mali jokingly asks if she wants to represent him.

At the Diner, Alf is trying to sort out the patrol rosters with John and checks Dana is still fine to work with him. John is worried about Cash and tells Alf about him and Eden breaking up. Justin comes in and apologises to Leah for being so late. He asks Theo if he handled everything at the garage. Theo says he did but more came in so Justin will need to handle it tomorrow when he has the day off. Justin says that’s fine and claims to Leah he had a problem with a supplier. That night, Cash is lying awake. He looks at the letter, then gets up and starts writing to the recipient, thanking her for the letter.

Next morning, Justin and Leah are at the coffee cart discussing Theo, with Leah revealing he thinks Justin’s avoiding him. Justin gets a call from Claudia and walk away to take it. She obviously wants him to pick her up today. He reminds her she was meant to tell him about her appointments but eventually says to text him the details and he’ll be there.
