Extended Summary

Rose meets up with Mali on the beach after a class. They discuss the newspaper article. Whilst Rose isn’t happy about what it said about her, she is more worried about the mother’s reaction. Mali suggests the mother might not have seen it but Rose doesn’t think that’s possible if she’s local. She ends up offering to get Mali a coffee. At the Lyrik house, Remi tries telling Bree he didn’t like lying to her but Bree isn’t impressed. Remi asks what he has to do to get her to forgive him and Bree says he should give up the bike. She leaves.

Alf returns to the Diner and apologises to Marilyn for snapping at her, saying he just let the article get to him. He offers to talk wedding plans. Marilyn says she’s thinking of throwing Leah a bridal shower but they’re interrupted by the arrival of Roo, who went to see the editor with Harper. While it’s too late to retract the story, the editor agreed Tane should have been given the right to reply: Peter has been reprimanded and it won’t happen again. At the hospital, Harper joins Tane just after a nurse has left him with Maia. She shows him the article, saying it’s leaked Maia’s temporary name and also questioned Tane’s motives.

Alf and Mali are trying to get rid of the copies of the paper at the surf club and agree it’s unfair on Rose. Alf wonders when Tane will reopen the gym. Mali says he’s still paying the trainers and he’s talked to him about putting a manager on. Rose arrives with the coffees and Mali invites her to join him for a walk followed by mocktails and dinner. As they walk, he notes he’s been remembering how Mackenzie and Xander helped him out with the surf lessons. Before he can go much further, they see Bree nearby, looking upset. Mali leaves Rose to talk to her. Bree tells Rose that Remi lied to her again.

Alf and Roo look over the donations table at the surf club. Roo notes more are coming in and admits it might be because of the article. Alf thinks it’s probably down to Rose’s press conference. While some of the presents are addressed to Maia, Roo notices a bracelet engraved Poppy. Alf recalls having a cousin Poppy who used to climb a tree and throw rocks at him and his sisters. Roo wonders if it’s Maia’s real name.

Near the beach, Bree has filled Rose in on what happened with Remi and says he doesn’t care about her feelings. Rose notes that doesn’t sound like Remi: She understands Bree’s point of view but notes riding is obviously something Remi is passionate about. She gets a text from Roo saying it’s important. Bree lets her go, even though Remi is coming over. Remi guesses Bree filled Rose in.

Roo and Alf show Rose the bracelet. Roo thinks the fact the name Mai appeared in the paper is significant and the mum is trying to correct them. Rose thinks it could just be someone trying to name the baby themselves but takes the bracelet at evidence. Back at the hospital, Tane thinks the article is unfair to Rose but doesn’t care what it says about him. He wonders how they knew about the name Maia and Harper admits Dana was tricked into revealing it. Mali turns up and offers to run the gym for Tane. Harper agrees it’s a good idea and Tane hands over the key.

Alf brings Roo a herbal tea in the office and finds her looking up the name Poppy, which turned out to be quite popular. Peter comes in and asks Mali about the gym being open, looking for Tane. Alf, Roo and Mali all want him to leave. Peter says this isn’t his idea: After the complaint, his editor told him to go and get Tane’s side of the story. Although nobody answers him, he works out that Tane’s still at the hospital.

Down on the beach, Remi says he understands why Bree feels betrayed. Bree tells him to stop saying what he thinks she wants to hear. Remi says he wanted to ride again and see what it felt like. Bree calls it a death wish. Remi says he’s been riding since he was seventeen. He says he’d never tell her to stop surfing even though she could fall off and drown or be eaten by a shark. Bree says she’s not the one who ended up on the operating table. She reminds him she told him it was her or the bike and it looks like he’s made his choice. Remi doesn’t answer so Bree says they’re over.

Rose has gone to see Tane and Harper at the hospital and told them about Roo’s theory. She isn’t convinced but is going to look at Birth, Deaths and Marriages to see if she can find any Poppys the right age and also see if she can find where the bracelet came from. She and Harper look at Maia, thinking it’s a shame she can’t tell them her name. Harper thinks Roo was right and this is the mother letting them know she still cares. Tane retorts that if you care you turn up. Meanwhile, Remi arrives home and takes a painkiller, then calls Justin and asks him to do him a favour about the bike.

Next morning, Rose turns up at the hospital in uniform and runs into Bree. She asks how things went with Remi and Bree says they broke up. Rose is shocked but Bree thinks it’s for the best and she doesn’t want to be wondering if Remi’s lying to her. At that moment, Remi is on the bike again, riding it out into the bush.

Harper checks on Tane with Maia, bringing him breakfast before heading into work. After she’s gone, Peter turns up. He introduces himself to Tane and offers him an exclusive. Tane tells him to get out as Peter asks about his connection to the baby and if he’s the father. Tane pushes Peter out of the room and they start scuffling. Rose steps in and separates them. Maia has started crying during the altercation. Meanwhile, at the gym, Mali is on the phone, promising an unhappy customer the class will be on tomorrow. Roo listens in and Mali notes he has to sort out rosters, pay and holiday on top of his own business. Roo offers to help out.

Rose tells Tane to stay where he is while she goes to talk to Peter. She tells Peter he has no right coming there and causing trouble and she’s going to issue an AVO telling him to stay away. Peter protests that he was assaulted. Rose sends him away then goes back to Tane, who has gone back in with Maia. She tells Tane that he’s not off the hook and they need to have a serious talk.
