Extended Summary

Dana is going for a run on the beach. Nearby, Xander and Bree discuss the fact Bree has been preoccupied lately. Xander notices Dana and recalls her from the hospital. Bree calls her over and she and Xander introduce themselves to each other. Bree says Xander used to work as a paramedic and he explains him now working at Salt is a long story. Dana carries on and Bree wonders how Mackenzie is. Xander hasn’t heard from her today but hopes she’s all right.

At the farm house, Paramedic Wiley checks over Mackenzie and says her obs are all normal. Mali hurries in to join Tane. Wiley suggests Mackenzie go back to hospital to get checked over but Mackenzie thinks she just overreacted and had a panic attack and sends the paramedics away. She tells Tane and Mali she’s going to have a lie down. She heads to her room and places her phone on the side before going back to bed.

Walking in a park area, Bree tells Xander she’s meant to have another counselling session after work but hasn’t confirmed it. She says the sessions keep bringing up guilt over Jacob and she can’t get past it. Xander helps her realise she has to keep showing up. Meanwhile, Tane tells Mali that Mackenzie checked herself out of hospital. Mali wishes she’d let them call her mum or Dean. Tane says she listens to Xander. He wants to get someone to cover for him at the gym but Mali says he’ll keep an eye on Mackenzie. He checks on her in her room but gets no response so he leaves her.

At the Lyrik house, Kiirby tries out a tune and suggests some lyrics. Justin suggests some of his own which are a bit ropey but Kirby encourages him, saying they’re beautiful. Justin says the song has to be perfect. Kirby convinces him to take a quick break and go for a coffee. Meanwhile, Xander joins Mali at the farm house. Mali explains about the paramedics wanting Mackenzie to go to hospital. Xander checks on Mackenzie (who has rolled over since Mali checked on her) and tries to wake her. He tells Mali to call an ambulance and starts doing chest compressions.

Bree arrives at the hospital, making a phone call confirming her counselling appointment. Levi is there, chatting to Dana about tying things up before heading back to his old job. Bree suggests he make one last attempt to talk to Eden before going. Levi says he doesn’t know how to contact her. Bree offers him her number.

Justin and Kirby are at the coffee cart. Justin still can’t think about anything except the song. Levi turns up and explains he’s looking for Eden: He left her a voicemail but she hasn’t answered. Justin, learning Eden has a brother for the first time, suggests he come back to the house and wait for her but Kirby doesn’t think it’s a good idea. Levi then gets a call and says there’s an emergency.

Xander is with Mackenzie as she is rushed into hospital. He tells Bree and Dana that he found her unresponsive in bed, then stops and lets Wiley give the details. Levi pushes past him, ordering an ECG and other tests, before snapping that this is why she shouldn’t have left the hospital. Meanwhile, Justin and Kirby arrive back at the Lyrik house, with Justin talking about changing the second verse to give a stronger lead-in to the chorus. Kirby is thinking about Eden and Levi, but Justin says if she can’t do anything about that they should concentrate on finishing the song. Kirby says she knows all about using music to get through pain and asks Justin to explain why this is so important to him.

Levi checks Mackenzie’s ECG and tells Dana to take bloods to pathology and get the portable ultrasound. Xander is unable to provide much information about how she was in the lead-up. Although Bree tries to defuse things, Levi has a go at Xander for enabling Mackenzie leaving, saying if she’d been monitored it wouldn’t have got this far. Dana interrupts with the ultrasound. Xander asks her how much she heard of it and Dana convinces him he can’t do anything there.

At the surf club, Alf is having a tense phone call, which he tells Tane is surf club committee business. Mali arrives and learns Tane had his phone off while he was with a client. He explains about Mackenzie being in hospital. The two of them find Xander outside and he tells them Mackenzie’s touch and go. They aren’t happy he left her but he says they’ll just be in the way if they go back.

At the hospital, Dana says Mackenzie’s vitals are within normal limit. She asks Levi about before with Xander, saying it wasn’t like him. Levi says he gets annoyed when people talk about things they know nothing about. Dana tells him Xander used to be a paramedic. Bree returns with the results including an elevated D-dimer. Levi says they need to rush Mackenzie into theatre for clot retrieval.

Justin tells Kirby he trusts the clinic to take care of Leah. Kirby says it must be hard not talking to her and he admits he feels useless: Writing the song makes him feel he can do something for her. Kirby understands but suggests he’s rushing it. He agrees to take it slow. At the coffee cart, Xander is on the phone to the hospital and Mali is getting coffees, while Tane sits with Alf. Xander tells them it was a blood clot. Mali says Mackenzie’s become like a sister to him and Tane says she’s family to him too. Alf asks why they’re there in that case.

Xander, Tane and Mali head back to the hospital and nervously wait for news, with Dana checking on them. Meanwhile, Mackenzie remains in surgery with Levi.
