Episode 8099

Tane is setting up a class near the beach. Felicity attempts to sneak up on him, but he asks what she’s doing without turning round. They discuss final arrangements for the first self-defence class tomorrow. Eden appears and she and Felicity discuss Lyrik’s first gig as a trio that evening. Back at the Lyrik house, Remi assures Bree he’s fine with her moving in. Eden arrives and Remi comments on her absence. She asks if Theo’s learned the new arrangements. Remi admits it’s not just Kirby they’ll be performing without.

At the Diner, Marilyn is rushing about while Leah tells Justin he can’t hide out there forever and has to go and see Mackenzie and let her know about the gig. Marilyn offers to work Leah’s shift so she can spend the evening with Justin. At Salt, Felicity arranges staff to set up the stage and tells Mackenzie that the extra staff and drinks are arranged. Justin turns up and tells them that the band can’t play anything Kirby wrote or co-wrote, which means they’re left with covers and All of You. Mackenzie says that people are coming to listen to the new album, not covers, and calls the gig off, which Felicity isn’t entirely happy with. Justin says to take it up with Forrest.

Remi gets off the phone to Justin and tells Eden and Bree that the gig’s been cancelled. Eden asks about the album, then decides from Remi’s expression that she doesn’t want to know. She sees Bree’s suitcase and learns about the house switch. Bree stresses it was her idea and Remi tells her Justin told them not to talk to Kirby about the copyright. Eden heads round to see Leah and Justin, telling Justin he doesn’t get to tell her who she’s friends with and wondering what he actually does apart from deliver bad news. Justin points out she was the one that refused to answer Kirby’s calls.

Mackenzie tells the crowd that the gig is off, with them unimpressed by the pizza and cocktails deals she offers instead. Tane turns up and Felicity says they could have had a great cover band. She notes she kept out of it because she didn’t want to undermine Mack. Mackenzie decides to do what Justin said and talk to Forrest. Remi and Bree are at the bar and Remi checks the drinks are free. Mackenzie replies that free drinks are for performers. Remi replies that if it was up to him, he’d be performing.

Next morning, Mackenzie runs into Justin by the beach. She tells him she spoke to Forrest and showed him the contract that Kirby and the rest of Lyrik signed: He’s agreed compensation for lack of income and gigs with Kirby when her single comes out.

Outside the Lyrik house, Bree tells Remi she’s unpacked her stuff. Remi makes her moving in official by giving her a key…although he notes they never lock the place anyway. Eden appears; Bree offers to walk to self-defence with her but Eden says she’ll catch her up, maybe. Remi notes Eden hasn’t pinched his toast so it must be bad. Eden wonders how they got here. At the Diner, Justin complains to Leah about Forrest being reasonable with Mackenzie. He notes the band’s falling apart.

Tane and Felicity have set up the class with a number of women attending. Felicity wonders what’s happened to Eden. Mackenzie and Bree arrive, although Bree says she’ll have to leave early for work. Tane tells the class that the idea isn’t to trade blows but to get away safely and take back control. He says he’ll teach them some simple strikes and to partner up. Mackenzie and Bree pair up but Felicity is left over and again wonders where Eden is. Bree admits she’s probably not coming.

Remi and Eden reflect on the fact they never thought about contracts: They were too busy having fun and thought their friendships would be enough. Remi says Eden’s still got him and he was her favourite anyway. He notes his parents know the business and the legal stuff would be the same. He says they’ve got nothing to lose by contacting them.

Some time later, Remi ends a phone conversation with his father and tells Eden that his parents have put him in touch with a lawyer. Felicity turns up and asks Eden why she isn’t at self-defence. Eden says she’s not in the mood. Felicity declares herself a terrible friend for not noticing Eden’s problems…but also says that the self-defence class is the best thing for her. Eden gives in.

Remi goes round to see Justin and tells him his parents have arranged an appointment for them with a top entertainment rights lawyer. Justin quickly abandons his breakfast, saying Theo can have it, and says they need to stop by the Diner and let Leah know.

Tane tells the class about basic blocks to disable opponents and directs them to practice the blow you’d put to the face by hitting pads their partners are holding. Bree excuses herself to go to the hospital and Tane partners Mackenzie for a while until Felicity and Eden turn up and he catches them up. At the Diner, Justin and Remi fill Leah in on their trip. Remi points out that Theo wrote some of the songs with Kirby so he’s probably got rights as well. Marilyn tells Leah she’s spoken to Irene and her granddaughter’s had the babies.

Tane gets Mackenzie to help him demonstrate ways of getting out of a wrist grab and tells them to practice hitting with a palm. He goes to answer a phone call from Nikau, leaving Mackenzie to practice on a punchbag. Felicity encourages Eden to go for it…only for Eden to miss the pad and hit her in the face.
