Extended Summary

Tane follows Kahu from the house as he prepares to head off to the gym. Felicity arrives back and Kahu tells her he’s sorted out the washing and the dishes, prompting her to call him the perfect house guest. After he’s gone, Tane tells Felicity he thinks Kahu is only doing it because he gave him a serve over Cash and wants to follow him to the surf club and keep an eye on him. Felicity says to give her a moment to get her laptop and then she’ll walk back with him.

Rose and Mali are walking outside the surf club. Rose admits she’s been avoiding him but wonders why he kept saying he liked hanging out with her and she was special during the surf lesson. As John watches from a distance, Mali babbles, saying he meant it and her making a move on him meant nothing. Rose ends up cutting him short and walking off. John sarcastically says that went well.

Mackenzie emerges from the store room at Salt and Xander checks she’s all right. She halts further conversation by telling him the merlots are running low. Kahu turns up and Mackenzie says she’s missed his face but nothing else. She asks Xander to take his order. Xander reminds her he’s meant to be sorting out the merlots and she tells him to do both.

Bree finds Remi at his house, having just come home from work. He shows her an advert for a Battle of the Bands with a $20,000 prize. He says the band have never entered anything like that but he was the state-wide classical guitar champion when he was twelve. He notes his parents were disappointed when he turned to electric guitar but it’s led to him ending up with someone out of his league. Bree goes to have a shower.

Tane and Felicity arrive at the surf club and see Kahu talking to John. Tane worries it’s suss but Felicity says they could just be discussing stamps. Kahu asks Tane what he’s doing there and Tane says he has to adjust the rosters. He asks what Kahu was talking to John about. Kahu asks if Tane’s fed up of babysitting him but Tane just repeats the question. Kahu says they were talking about where they grew up.

Upstairs, Mackenzie rather bluntly chides Xander for giving a table the wrong wines. His phone goes off and she tells him not to answer it, being dismissive of Rose’s crisis. Rose sends Xander a text saying “SOS” and Felicity tells him to call her, annoying Mackenzie. Rose starts to rant to Xander about the most embarrassing experience of her life but almost immediately hangs up to answer the door…which, of course, turns out to be Mali.

Bree, having got changed, joins Remi outside. Remi is distracted looking up the Battle of the Band requiremements, which include individual bios, history of the band and gig footage, complaining that there’s three pages of terms and conditions. Bree half-seriously says she’ll go and stop distracting him. Remi gives her his attention.

Rose says she wishes she hadn’t tried to kiss Mali and admits she saw things because she wanted them to be true. Mali suggests they just blame him. Rose asks if he hasn’t got a surf lesson to get to and Mali realises she memorised his schedule. He suggests she walk there with him.

Tane approaches John and asks what he and Kahu were talking about and if Kahu asked him for money. John says they were talking about Scutters Beach, which he visited in his navy days. Kahu cuts in and, as he and Tane square off, John tells them not to punch up inside the clubhouse, or outside, or anywhere else. Kahu says whanau are meant to trust each other and Tane retorts that he’s given him reason not to.

Back at the Lyrik house, Remi and Bree are now half-dressed. Bree suggests an early dinner but Remi wants to get on with sorting out the Battle of the Bands. He discovers they’re only allowed to do three songs and remembers they have a gig coming up. Bree remembers it’s next week. Remi checks she’s okay with it. Bree says she is but looks uncomfortable.

Kahu has gone back up to Salt and Mackenzie comments on him giving her thw cold shoulder. Kahu says he wasn’t into anything deep. Mackenzie says she didn’t think he’d do what Tane told him to and suggests he lost interest when he found out she wasn’t loaded. Kahu denies it but Mackenzie says she was using him as well. Xander remarks to Felicity that Mackenzie seems fine when not dealing with him and mentions seeing her crying earlier. Felicity approaches Mackenzie and asks about Kahu. Mackenzie says he’s after a woman with a healthier bank account.

Mali and Rose walk through a park area. She asks why he wants to stay friends and he says she’s smart, funny and honest…too honest at times. Rose agrees it would be the mature thing and Mali says then she could stop avoiding him. Rose asks what he’s doing after the surf lesson.

Xander tells Felicity she was right about him keeping his head down. However, after she’s gone, he asks to talk to Mackenzie, reminding her of why he quit his paramedic job and saying he has good days and some he wants to forget. Mackenzie tells him about looking at the texts and how she misses Gabe. Xander takes some glasses from her. Rose turns up and Xander says she might want to leave when Mali comes in a moment later. Mali and Rose pretend to snipe at each other before bursting out laughing.

At the Lyrik house, Remi tells Bree he’s been ringing venue managers cancelling the tour. Bree asks why and Remi says they need to rehearse for the competition. Bree asks if the others are on board. Remi tells her he hasn’t told them yet because he wanted to tell the venues first but thinks they’ll be fine with it.

Sitting at the juice bar, Felicity tells Tane what Mackenzie said about Kahu. John comes over and asks if they’re going to smooch like teenagers. Felicity says that’s an idea. Tane recalls Kahu saying he was going to use his money to register the business. He looks him up and sees he isn’t on the registry. Felicity wonders what he spent the money on and convinces Tane to wait until he’s calmer.

Next morning, Remi finds Bree outside the house. She says she’s been up for hours and explains she’s not comfortable about him cancelling the gig. Remi says he’s doing that for the album but Bree says that’s about her as well and that he’s not helping.

Kahu is cleaning out the pool. Tane approaches him and asks about his business. Kahu says he registered it under his name. Tane grabs the net Kahu’s holding and says he wants the truth.
