Extended Summary

Tane takes Kahu for a walk on the beach, telling him if he wants to be trainer, he’ll have to be the fittest person in the class. He tells him to do ten push-ups. Kahu takes off his shirt and starts to do so, then asks if Tane’s going to join him, betting him $10 that he won’t be able to keep up. Tane accepts the challenge and also strips off, with them competing in rope exercises, running, ground exercises and crawling.

At the Diner, Irene serves Cash and Bree and comments on them missing Lyrik. Cash says they’re only away for a few days but Irene thinks he’ll be lost without Eden. While she’s getting their orders, Cash gets a text from Remi asking him to keep an eye on Bree. He tells Bree that he’s not admitting Irene’s right but maybe they should hang out.

Felicity joins Tane and Kahu on the beach as they finish their session. Justin approaches, having just finished a surf. Felicity introduces him to Kahu but Justin’s response is rather flat before he walks off. Kahu sarcastically refers to him as fun and Tane says he must be having a bad day. At the Diner, Irene makes a few efforts to get the attention of Leah to discuss her and Marilyn doing more work while Irene’s away. Leah explains it’s Justin’s first day of community service. Justin arrives and he and Leah briefly talk about the day.

At the flat, Rose wonders what Xander’s up to and he says he’s filling in his exit form for the ambulance service. He says he’s already resignrd and this is just a formality. Rose checks he’s sure. Xander submits the form and insists he’s fine. Meanwhile, Bree is telling Cash how she felt off before Remi left. She mentions how her marriage was long-distance and Cash suggests there’s a connnection. Bree says she used to feel relieved at first when Jacob left but soon felt dread at him coming back. She suggests it’s muscle memory since she actually wants Remi to come back. Rose appears and Cash leaves her and Bree to talk while he goes to work. Rose admits she’s not sure Xander’s okay.

Xander stands on the beach, where he strips off to reveal he is still bandaged from the operation. Despite this, he grabs his surf board and runs out to sea. Shortly after, Rose and Bree are walking through a park area. Bree asks about Mali and Rose admits to stalking him on social media. They see Xander, and Rose is shocked to realise he’s been surfing. She wants him to get checked out and Bree says it wouldn’t hurt. Xander is reluctant but agrees when Rose threatens to follow him around all day otherwise.

At the Diner, Irene and Leah try to cheer Justin up about the community service. Justin says he’ll probably be picking up litter. Leah suggests he might be helping people. Irene says he might make a friend and Justin replies that they’re criminals. Leah suggests some might be people trying to improve themselves like him. At Salt, Tane tells Kahu the qualifications he’ll need to work as a trainer. Felicity is encouraging as Tane says he can do most of it online. He also says Kahu has his first pay and it’ll be double that for working as a trainer. Kahu says breakfast is on him.

Bree gives Xander a check over and says his blood pressure’s fine. Rose asks if he was told what he could and couldn’t do after surgery. Xander says surfing wasn’t mentioned. Bree and Rose both suggest he stick to light activity but he insists he doesn’t need to be wrapped in cotton wool. At the gym, Tane gives Kahu information on how to sign up for TAFE. Kahu gets a phone call from his mum and walks away to take it, claiming the trawler has just got into port and they got a great catch.

Justin pulls up at the community service site and finds Cash supervising things. Cash says they’re missing Robbie Carpenter, who turns up on his bike moments later. Cash chides him about being late before telling the group they’re going to spend eight hours cleaning the nearest house. He says to separate recycling and general waste and not take anything. Robbie realises Justin knows Cash but Justin refuses to talk to him.

Later, Cash reminds the group to only put the right things in the recycle bin. Robbie talks about Justin working hard and suggests he get Cash to go easy on them. Cash tells Justin to take a five minute break but refuses to let Robbie have one as well. Robbie threatens to report him and Cash tells him to move a chair.

Bree tries to get Rose to stop worrying about Xander. Rose thinks he should have a scan. Xander comes through and tells her to drop it. He answers a call from his old boss and says he’s made up his mind. Bree tells Rose Xander can go back to the ambos if he wants and will know if there’s something wrong with him. At the gym, Kahu stacks some shelves. Tane comments on how he dislikes doing the accounts. Kahu says he wants to know all about the business and Tane offers to run him through the software.

Justin has a drink and puts the bottle back in his bag. Robbie appears with some copper wire he found and asks Justin to store it in his car so he can give it to a scrap merchant. Justin tells Robbie to back off. Robbie tells Cash to keep an eye on Justin. Cash warns Justin to keep an eye on his temper. Later, Cash calls an end to lunch and has to tell Robbie twice after he stays sitting down. Robbie starts sorting through a suitcase. Justin sees him find a watch and pocket it.

Tane shows Kahu the expenses and profit. Kahu is impressed. He mentions that he didn’t expect the course to cost $1500 upfront, claiming he spent his savings on the air fare over there. He says all his pay went on breakfast and paying off his credit card, so asks Tane for help. Tane looks uncertain.
