Extended Summary

Remi is busking outside the surf club and both Mackenzie and Stacey stop to listen. Mackenzie comments on the upbeat tune. Xander comes out in time to hear Stacey telling Remi she hasn’t seen him in a while. She tells Xander that she and Remi hooked up a few times, then asks about his date. Xander reminds her they aren’t supposed to kiss and tell but says it went great. Up in Salt, Dean is tense as he waits for his takeaway. Mackenzie comments on him not asking her about her trip but Dean explains about Ziggy being in hospital. Mackenzie says she’ll go back to the hospital with him.

Cash arrives at the hospital and is greeted by Bree, who takes him into her office to talk. Bree says the victim’s in the hospital and admits it’s Ziggy. Cash realises she’s accusing Dean and seems sceptical. Bree says he’s aggressive and controlling and Ziggy keeps making excuses for him and calming him down. She says she likes them but points out things can be different behind closed doors.

Ziggy is on the phone to Dean, asking him to bring her a decaf. Cash arrives with Bree and says he’s received a report about her and Dean and needs to ask her some questions. Ziggy is increasingly confused as Bree says they’re here to help her, she’s safe and she doesn’t have to keep on lying for Dean.

Dean and Mackenzie exit the surf club and Remi jokingly asks if one of the coffees is for him. Dean squares up to him and Mackenzie sends him to the car, explaining to Remi about Ziggy being in hospital. Stacey returns, having hoped Remi would still be playing. Remi says he’s meeting someone. At the Diner, Xander tells Irene he had a date that didn’t work out and it wasn’t with Stacey, explaining about her not believing in monogamy and how he’s trying to respect that because she was honest. Irene says he can’t try and change who he is.

Dean and Mackenzie arrive at the hospital but are stopped by Cash who asks to speak to Dean. Dean wants to deliver the food to Ziggy but Cash stops him and Bree stops Ziggy getting out of bed, saying it’s for her protection. Mackenzie realises Dean has been accused of hurting Ziggy. Cash says if Dean doesn’t calm down he’ll have to arrest him, and ends up dragging him down the station. Dean asks Mackenzie to stay with Ziggy. At the station, Cash takes Dean into the interview room. Dean wants to get back to Ziggy but Cash says he has a job to do.

Mackenzie tries to argue that she lives with Dean and Ziggy and would know but Bree says abusers are clever and she’s trained to recognise the signs. She says Dean’s been aggressive and controlling and Ziggy has a bruise she can’t account for. Mackenzie realises Bree thinks Dean pushed Ziggy down the stairs. Bree says she’s trying to keep Ziggy safe but Ziggy tells her to get out, saying she wants another doctor, and asks Mackenzie to check on Dean. Bree runs across Remi as Mackenzie comes past and says Bree’s meant to cure people, not tear them apart.

Cash tells Dean it’ll take as long as it has to. Dean refuses to answer his questions but does insist he’d never hurt Ziggy. He sees Mackenzie and worries something’s happened. Cash goes to talk to her and she says to tell Dean Ziggy’s as well as she can be. Cash explains Dean hasn’t actually been interviewed yet and says Mackenzie can wait and talk to him afterwards.

Stacey finishes off a class on the beach. Xander comes over and asks if they can have lunch together, saying they need to talk. Stacey says she’ll meet him at Salt in a bit. Back at the police station, Dean is unable to provide an explanation for how Ziggy fell down the stairs. Cash says he can keep Dean there for six hours and he could end up with an AVO if he doesn’t co-operate.

Walking on the beach, Remi asks Bree what made her think something was going on. Bree says she knows what abuse looks like. Remi says he’s not Dean’s biggest fan but he and Ziggy seem to get each other. Bree says things can be different on the inside to the outside, noting her family all love Jacob. Remi says that’s her story, not necessarily Ziggy’s. Bree gets annoyed and walks away.

Dean can only suggest that Ziggy tripped or got dizzy. Cash says they won’t be applying for an AVO but Dean will need to stay away from Ziggy until they’ve spoken to her. He asks if Dean has anywhere to stay and Dean says that’s not his problem. He meets up with Mackenzie. Cash agrees to Dean calling Ziggy once. Mackenzie asks Cash if Dean seems like an abuser.

Stacey notes Xander isn’t eating. Xander admits that the non-exclusive thing isn’t for him, he believes in committing to one person. Stacey understands and says being open and honest is the whole idea, but she can’t be something she’s not either. She kisses him on the cheek and leaves. Meanwhile, Cash runs into Remi in the street. He recalls what Remi said before about having a friend who’s in trouble and says to let him know if he thinks of any reason why Bree said what she did.

Dean and Mackenzie chat outside the surf club. Dean can’t go to the hospital or home and Mackenzie worries he’ll end up sleeping in his car. Dean asks Mackenzie to look after Ziggy. Bree listens unnoticed from a nearby table, looking guilty. She goes round to see Remi and tells him she’s not there to argue: She’s made a big mistake.
