Extended Summary

Xander rejoins Rose on the beach. Rose is still getting used to seeing his tattoos but Xander says it’s him now, although he’s going to get rid of the last one because he should never have got it. He suspects she’s worrying about seeing Cash at work, saying Cash has to fix himself. Bree comes along and comments on Xander having changed his mind about going in the water. Rose seems to look from Xander to Bree thoughtfully as Bree walks away. Meanwhile, Heather wakes up alone in her caravan. She pulls on a robe and goes outside, where she finds Nikau has got breakfast. He is still trying to wrap his head round what she said about Marilyn but is glad she told him.

John is loitering by the door at the surf club. Dean bangs into him while coming in with a box and complains about him being in the way. Tane comes past, with Dean noting he’s in a good mood. Alf comes in and John asks him about Marilyn. Alf says she locked herself away in her room all night and was gone before light. John doesn’t think she slashed his tyres. Alf says he finds it’s hard to believe but doesn’t know what to think when Marilyn won’t talk to him.

Near the beach, Xander and Rose discuss the fact she has to go into work while he has three days off. Xander suggests they meet up for lunch. They see Marilyn looking upset but she declines Rose’s offer to call Irene, saying she doesn’t want to speak to anyone.

John finds Marilyn on the beach and asks to speak to her. Marilyn starts to walk away until John apologises to her, saying he knows she’d never have done that to his car and shouldn’t have asked her. Marilyn asks why he did and he says the idea was put in his head. He says it’s not right she’s being accused.

At the Diner, a flustered Irene tells Rose they’re short-staffed because Marilyn hasn’t turned up. Roo says she was gone when she and Alf got up. Rose talks about seeing her upset by the beach. Roo says things are getting worse, mentioning John’s car. John comes in at that moment and says it wasn’t Marilyn, telling Rose he wants to report a crime.

Heather rejoins Nikau, having got dressed. He isn’t happy that Marilyn is making her keep it a secret but says he supports whatever she decides. Alf appears with Rose, who he explains wants to speak to Heather. Rose says it’s to do with a damaged car. Nikau says if she means John’s, then Heather’s already said she didn’t do it. Alf convinces him they should both leave so Rose can talk to Heather. At the surf club, Xander tells Dean he’s been thinking of taking surfing lessons. Dean gives him a pamphlet. John enters and Dean says he heard about his car. John says the police should be getting the culprit right now.

Heather continues to tell Rose she didn’t do it. She admits she was at the surf club but says she doesn’t know what time. Nikau interrupts as Rose asks if Heather threatened John. Heather says he was hassling her and she told him to back off. She continues to be vague about where she was until Nikau says she was with him: They went back to his and watched the footie. He agrees to make a statement. Heather looks triumphant.

At the Diner, Irene chides Marilyn for only turning up to work when she feels like it. Marilyn says she couldn’t face anyone after being accused. Irene tells her to take some muffins outside. Nearby, Roo finishes a phone call with Alf about Heather’s alibi. Marilyn isn’t happy when Irene says it doesn’t look good for her, saying her ex-husband has more faith in her than her friends. Heather comes in and apologises to Roo for being late, saying she can’t believe the police questioned her and has to go. To Irene’s frustration, Marilyn also leaves, saying she needs a minute.

Xander and Bree run into each other at Salt and briefly chat about their day off. Rose arrives and greets Xander, who is distracted and suggests they invite Bree to join them for lunch. Rose agrees, as does Bree. Meanwhile, Marilyn meets up with Heather by the beach. Heather insists people have it in for her and she’s beginning to wish she’d never found Marilyn. Marilyn asks if she did slash the tyres. Heather says she did; John was asking questions and she had to keep Marilyn’s secret. She reveals Nikau covered for her and also that she told him about Marilyn, saying he’s the only person that cares for her. Marilyn protests that she does and Heather retorts that Marilyn’s the one making her do this.

Dean runs into Tane at Salt and wonders about his good mood. Tane says to thank Ziggy for her advice and explains he’s going to propose to Felicity. Nearby, Rose asks Bree about Xander. Bree says nurses keep asking if he’s single. Rose emphasises that he is. Back at the Parata house, Tane greets Nikau, who tells him about giving the statement to help Heather. Tane tells him about the proposal plan. Nikau is delighted.

Xander and Bree debate the respective merits of swimming and surfing. Rose excuses herself from the meal and Xander calls her subtle. Bree wonders if Rose knows she’s married. Xander says he doubts it, since he didn’t know himself until just now. Later, Xander is walking by the road. Rose pulls up in her police car, alerting him with her siren. She correctly guesses that he’s on his way to meet Bree for a swim. Xander tells her that Bree’s married. Rose suggests it’s good practice for when another girl comes along.

Marilyn calls round to see Nikau and he lets her in. Marilyn says Heather told him that she told him about them and asks him to keep it secret. Nikau asks why. Marilyn says she needs to keep it secret so that she can get to know Heather. Nikau isn’t convinced and asks her how she thinks Heather feels being made to keep it a secret.

Marilyn returns to the Diner, where Irene asks if she’s actually going to stay this time. She gives John his coffee and he protests he’s had flat whites for twenty years. He complains that the police haven’t arrested Heather. Irene tells him that Heather’s been cleared. John insists she did it and he’s going to make sure she pays. Marilyn blurts out that she was the one who slashed his tyres.
