Extended Summary

Cash is on the beach. He tenses up as a jogger approaches but the man goes past without incident. Felicity surprises Cash from behind and he yells at her not to do that but denies being jumpy. He asks her about Tane and Nikau going to see the lawyer and she says she’s going with them. He tells her he’s got an appointment for his last psych assessment and is ready to go back to work. He then picks up Xander’s voicemail.

At the Parata house, Nikau is dissolving a headache tablet. Tane chides him for getting wasted the night before going to see the lawyer and he says he had one night not thinking about the court case. Felicity turns up and mentions Cash’s emergency call. Nikau says he needs a shower and Felicity tells him not to use the hot water. She is unhappy about Xander involving Cash in his problems.

Xander greets Cash at the flat. Rose is surprised to see him there. Xander says Rose has some news for Cash. Rose says it’s nothing and offers to walk him out but Xander insists they all go for something to eat. Meanwhile, Roo meets Heather at the Diner. Heather suggests they meet at hers and asks if there’s problems there. Roo brushes aside the question and says she’s looked over Heather’s application and thinks it’s ready to submit. Heather tries to put it off and snaps at Roo to back off before apologising. Roo says not to let fear get in the way of helping people. Heather presses some buttons on the laptop and says it’s done.

Nikau has got changed for the solicitor’s appointment. Tane asks him about Heather and if he’s worried about the court case. Nikau worries about what will happen if Tex’s guys show up. Tane says the DPP will take care of that. Nikau is still worried about Cash staying with them but Tane says he needs them. Felicity comes out and Tane asks if she wants to stay and check on Cash. Felicity notes Cash says he can look after himself.

Xander, Rose and Cash arrive at Salt. Cash asks what’s going on between the pair. Xander says Rose got recommended for a commendation. Cash congratulates her and Xander says she said no. Rose insists she’s focused on the investigation and it’s not a big deal before rushing out. Xander and Cash follow her to a park area. Cash says to leave it with him and tells Rose it’ll look good when she applies to be detective. Rose says she doesn’t understand why she’s getting a commendation when he got shot. Cash says he chose not to put on a vest and, despite Tex goading her and Nikau showing up and him not being on top of his game, she stayed focused and put a lot of dangerous criminals behind bars. Rose agrees to accept it and goes after Xander, at which point Cash looks less cheery.

Nikau, Tane and Felicity arrive home and note that it’s good the court hearing is going to be closed, wishing they’d heard that before. Tane says the police and legal people know what really happened. After Nikau has gone to his room, Cash comes home. Felicity invites him to come out for lunch with them but Cash says he’s not hungry and shuts himself away in his room. Felicity says she’ll stick around and Tane says he’ll keep her company. In his room, Cash sits on the bed, looking drained.

At the Diner, Heather thanks Roo for reminding her why she got into law. As Marilyn comes over to clear the table, Heather comments on how anyone can have a baby and then just give it up. Marilyn says thousands of people adopt for different reasons. Leah looks on with concern as Roo cuts Marilyn off. Roo tells Heather that Marilyn has an adopted son. Stony-faced, Heather asks where he is. Roo says Jett’s in the city. Later, Nikau finds Heather at Salt. He asks her to join him for a drink but she says she has something on. She jokes he should know all about her after last night and he points out she never answered any of his questions.

Leah finds Marilyn wandering near the beach. Marilyn asks if Leah is following her and Leah says she could see Marilyn was upset. She says she could see Heather hit a nerve and she’ll listen if Marilyn wants to talk. Marilyn says when she was very young she went on a trip around the country with her boyfriend: They broke up and she got a job working as a housekeeper on a cattle station and lent on her employer. She got pregnant and had a baby girl and thinks Heather is her daughter.

At the Diner flat, Rose is on the phone to her mother, with Xander shouting out interjections. Rose says there’s no big dinner, her sergeant will just give her the award at work. She promises to take photos. She hands the phone over to Xander, who agrees their dad would be proud.

Leah gets Marilyn a coffee and sits her down. Marilyn says she’s never told anyone before because she was too ashamed. She notes when she told Tim she was keeping the baby, he told his wife. Marilyn thought she’d be thrown out but instead was told she could stay until after the birth. She was looking forward to being a mum but Tim and his wife announced they wanted to adopt the baby and Marilyn felt she couldn’t look after her with no job, money or place to live. Leah encourages her to tell Alf and Roo or talk to Heather. Marilyn says she’s known them most of her adult life and never said anything and thinks they wouldn’t be able to look at her.

Heather turns up at the caravan park house with a chocolate cake to thank Roo for her help. Roo cautiously allows her in. Marilyn turns up moments later; Roo thought she’d be at work. Heather explains that, since she’s got no family, she thought she’d share it with them. Marilyn quickly makes her excuses and leaves.

Tane has to go to the gym while Felicity thinks she can’t ask Mackenzie to cover her shift. She worries that Cash has been holed up in his room all afternoon. She knocks on the door and invites Cash for dinner at Salt. Cash, lying on his bed, says he’s still not hungry. Felicity wants to see he’s all right. Cash comes to the door and looks relatively normal as he promises he’s all right, but lies back on his bed afterwards. Later, Tane goes to see Felicity at Salt. She says she called Cash to offer to bring a pizza home. She thinks whatever happened with Xander has messed with Cash’s head. Tane suggests he’ll have good days and bad days.

Rose answers a knock on the door which turns out to be Cash, who has brought a bottle to celebrate. He admits he had a couple of beers at home and tells her she’s got the whole world in front of her. Rose says he does too. Cash kisses her, leaving her shocked. She tells him to leave and he does.
