Is Dean the prime suspect for murder? Mac & Felicity’s feud boils over. Bella gets a dream proposal.
Extended Summary
Ziggy and Bella run into each other by the coffee cart. Bella has just got a text from Ryder saying he’s the king of cruise ship trivia and they comment on doing what he’s done. Bella invites Ziggy to share a coffee before she starts an assignment but Ziggy says she took the afternoon off work to spend time with Dean, so Bella promises to avoid the house all afternoon. They comment on the customer’s car Ziggy is looking after. After Bella’s gone, Ziggy gets a call from Dean and is shocked by where he is. She goes to the police station and sees him in the interview room with Cash. Rose stops her going in and tries to find out if she knew PK, before telling her she can wait.
At the Parata house, Felicity is trying to call Mackenzie or Nathan for information. Tane tries to get her to calm down and focus on the positives: They’re alive and healthy (“ish,”Felicity adds). Tane suggests they go for a walk to clear their heads. Meanwhile, Bella is lying on her back taking photos looking up at trees when Emmett leans over her and says the light’s not right for that shot. Bella is delighted to see him, having thought he was in New York. Emmett suggests they get a coffee then go up to her place to catch up. Bella says she doesn’t actually live there anymore and Emmett comments that a lot’s changed.
Cash finishes the interview with Dean and wonders what happened to his hands. Dean says he did it surfing. He finds Ziggy waiting. Cash asks if she can confirm Dean’s whereabouts on the day of the murder. Dean interrupts, saying they don’t know when it was, and Cash says it was two days ago between 1 and 4pm. Ziggy says he was home with her, since she took the day off work. After they’ve gone, Rose pokes holes in their story but Cash seems willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. At Salt, Mackenzie gets a call from Cash and reluctantly agrees to come down the station. Outside, Tane and Felicity are watching a class. Tane tries to usher her away when Mackenzie appears, steamed up. Mackenzie blames Felicity for suggesting the poker nights and Felicity retorts she told Mackenzie not to trust PK. Mackenzie also has a go for telling Logan about her going to PK’s room while Felicity accuses Mackenzie of only worrying about herself, before Tane finally gets her to leave.
Ziggy worries about lying to the police. Dean insists PK was alive when he left him. Ziggy worries he might have had a brain bleed but Dean says it’s not down to him and something else must have happened. At the police station, Cash and Rose look at Dean’s record, which includes card skimming, assault and manslaughter. Rose points out that the latter was a car accident, but Cash points out he was also a person of interest in Ross Nixon’s murder. Mackenzie turns up and Cash takes her in for an interview, saying he knows she’s in debt. Mackenzie realises Felicity told him. Cash asks about PK paying off some of the debt and what the terms were. Mackenzie says she paid him back a few days ago and hasn’t seen him since. Cash asks how Dean fits in and she says he doesn’t.
At the Diner, Emmett has been filling Bella in on his life in New York. He asks her what’s been going on in town. She says she’s back at TAFE and has been doing freelance work. He asks if she worked things out with Nikau. At the Parata house, Felicity insists that Mackenzie agreed to the poker nights and insisted on keeping going. Tane points out Mackenzie’s lost Logan and might lose the business and doesn’t have many people in her corner. He suggests leaving the past in the past and remembering that Felicity and Mackenzie made a good team once.
Mackenzie continues to insist to Cash that Dean had nothing to do with it and is shocked that the police have already spoken to him. As Cash shows her out, Rose tells him the coroner called: Cause of death was repeated blows to the head with a blunt weapon, probably a wrench. She also confirmed with John that Dean had an argument with PK and checked out his alibi: Ziggy used an ATM in Yabbie Creek that afternoon while CCTV places Dean in Reefton Lakes. They go to the farm house with other police officers and tell Ziggy they know the alibi was fake and have a warrant to search the place.
Mackenzie is on the balcony at Salt and texts Dean saying to give her a call. Tane sends Felicity over to her while he gets the drinks. Mackenzie says the police don’t know about the poker night but think PK paid off her debts. She thanks Felicity for coming up with a cover story but says to tell her next time. Felicity expresses regret about before and Mackenzie says Felicity was just in the way. They exchange apologies and say to not forget who the real bad guys are. Tane comes over and Mackenzie suggests they never trust people like that again.
Bella has filled Emmett in on her recent history, which he notes she never mentioned in her e-mails. He says he’s glad she went back to photography. Bella prepares to leave to do her assignment and Emmett tries to get her to stay. Bella asks what’s going on. He says he has a job for her in New York: He’s been hired by an indie gallery and needs an assistant for three months. Bella is astonished and he tells her to think about it. He goes to Salt where he and Mackenzie are pleased to see each other.
Rose tells Cash they didn’t find anything. Ziggy insists there’s nothing to find and, despite the false alibi, they’re nothing to do with anything. Rose asks where her vehicle is. She and Cash meet Dean outside the surf club to search his car. Rose finds a bloodied wrench in his boot. Dean says it’s nothing to do with him and doesn’t think it’s Ziggy’s either: He doesn’t know how it got there. Cash says they need him to come down the station. Dean protests at first but eventually comes quietly.
Arriving at the station, Dean admits to beating up PK but says he was alive when he last saw him. Cash points out he hasn’t been honest so far. Rose is sceptical about PK being fine when he was murdered the same day. They bring up his priors, his connections to the River Boys and Colby, and his false alibi. Dean says he can’t explain the wrench. Rose says she’ll get forensics onto it and Cash says it’s not looking good for him.
