Extended Summary

On the beach, John congratulates Nikau on getting a girl to stick close to her parents: It’s his first day as a paid lifeguard. Bella comes over and Nikau checks it’s okay to kiss her at work. She asks to talk but John says they have to move the flags. Nikau asks if it can wait until his break and Bella says she’ll meet him at the surf club. At the farm house, Ziggy tidies up and leaves a phone message for Dean asking if he’s okay. At Salt, Emmett is filling Mackenzie in on his visit and the New York job. Mackenzie dodges questions about her own life, saying it’s a rollercoaster that went off the rails. She gets a call from Ziggy and tells Emmett she has to go. He says he’ll be there when she gets back if she wants to talk.

Marilyn serves Alf at the coffee cart. Justin comes over and asks how Roo and Martha are going. Alf thanks him for the meals he and Leah left, which have let him concentrate on Roo and Martha. Marilyn gives him some cake for them and says she’ll visit when she finishes work. At the hospital, Roo and Martha arrive back at their room after a walk, with Martha commenting on having to carry a bag of fluids around. Alf listens at the door for a while before joining them. Martha tells him they’ve been for two walks. Roo thinks she’s doing well.

Mackenzie has joined Ziggy at the farm house. Ziggy says the police think Dean killed PK and Mackenzie recalls them asking questions about him. Ziggy says he’s not answering her calls and the police seemed to be looking for something specific. Dean comes home and asks them to sit down. He explains about the police finding the murder weapon but it doesn’t have his fingerprints on it. Ziggy wonders why the police are after him when it was her car the wrench was found in. Dean says he has priors plus someone’s trying to set him up. Mackenzie points out Nathan hated PK as much as them.

Bella is looking at photos of New York on her phone. John and Nikau come in and chat about his work. Nikau breaks off when he sees Emmett coming downstairs; John notes he looks as though he’s seen a ghost and he replies that he has. Bella says that’s what she wanted to talk about. Later, up in Salt, Nikau complains that he thought they were done with that world. Emmett brings some drinks over, including an OJ for Nikau, and tries to make small-talk but retreats when Nikau asks for space. Bella reminds Nikau Emmett was never the bad guy and Sienna screwed all of them over including Emmett. Nikau says seeing him reminds him of that time. Bella tells him about the job. Nikau can’t believe she’s considering it and won’t talk about it.

Downstairs, John and Justin chat about Theo. Justin says he’s been with Chloe every night and John notes they’re out of the friend zone. Nikau comes past and isn’t keen on talking. At the hospital, Marilyn runs into Roo in the corridor. Roo tells her about Martha walking and thinks she’ll be home soon. In their room, Martha tells Alf that she’s finding Roo a bit exhausting. Alf says to tell him if it gets too much.

Ziggy reminds Dean she told him not to call the River Boys while Mackenzie tries to call Nathan. Dean thinks he’ll have left the state. Mackenzie wants to go to the police and tell them about the poker nights, PK and Nathan. Dean says they’ll just think she’s covering for him and he’ll sort it. Ziggy tries to argue but Dean ignores her and tells Mackenzie he’s going to find Nathan. Mackenzie leaves and Ziggy again fails to dissuade Dean. Later, Dean has sent out a message to the River Boys asking them to look for Nathan. Ziggy isn’t happy, saying he still isn’t listening to her and she can’t lose him again.

At Salt, Emmett tells Bella that he understands Nikau having PTSD over Sienna. Bella says Nikau can’t see a difference between this job and the modelling business, so she can’t take it. Emmett is unhappy but Bella says she loves Nikau and they’ve worked really hard to get here. Emmett thinks she should be able to love him in New York and Nikau’s doing what he wants. He goes to talk to Mackenzie at the counter. Down on the beach, John is telling Justin getting Nikau a full-time job was the best thing he did. He notices Nikau is still at work an hour after his shift ended. Nikau tells him about Bella’s job offer. John thinks it’s a good thing but Nikau says she won’t want to come back to TAFE and hanging out on the beach: If she goes, she won’t come back.

Roo shows Martha an app that charts your progress, tells you your appointments and suggests activities. She thinks they should arrange a trip to the mountains for when Martha comes out. Alf tries to get her to cool down and Marilyn manages to get some respite by reminding Roo she has a physio appointment now, joking the app should have told her that. Later, Roo returns from the appointment and tells Alf and Martha she’s been told she can go home. She worries there’s something they’re not telling her. They say the doctor said Martha’s recovery would take a bit longer than Roo’s so she has to be there a few days longer. Roo refuses to go home without her.

John and Nikau are sorting out rosters at the surf club. Bella comes over and John says to remember he was one of her first paying customers. Nikau says he’s too busy to chat but John says they can wait until tomorrow and leaves them to it. Bella says she’s going to the city to sort out her passport: Going is the right thing for her. She accepts she might not want to come back so asks Nikau to come with her.
