Outside the surf club, Nikau worries about messing up on his first day as lifesaver. Bella reassures him and takes a photo of him in uniform. John comes out and says he’s not going to pay for it, asking Bella about her quote. Bella says she’ll see Nikau on the beach. At Salt, Mackenzie tells Logan she saw Dean and was told they’re not friends anymore. Logan explains he couldn’t give Dean a guarantee he’ll surf again. He mentions Marilyn’s checked herself into hospital, then gets a text and leaves.
At the Diner, Irene talks to Alf and Roo about them talking Marilyn around. Alf is hoping Martha will soon be back in her own bed. Irene asks Roo how long until she knows if she’s a donor. Soon after, Alf and Roo show Martha into her room at Northern Districts. She isn’t much brighter about trading one hospital room for another and asks about Marilyn, before accepting it’s nice to be closer to home.
Justin finds Theo on the couch at home and wonders if he’s moved in the last two hours, saying he’s hardly been outside except to work in days. Theo is trying to plan his next challenge but Justin thinks there isn’t any challenges without Ryder. He asks Theo what he used to do before this but that leads to Theo deciding to do the challenges on his own. At the surf club, John receives a phone call saying the treasurer is threatening to resign again. Nikau has restocked the first aid kit but John gives him a long list of maintenance jobs to do, including inflatables and the defibrillator. Bella comes in wondering why he isn’t on the beach, then notices Dean’s boards for sale.
Bella fills Mackenzie in at Salt, including the fact Colby’s boards are up for sale, but accepts it’s Dean’s choice. She recalls Ziggy and Dean fighting before and Mackenzie explains he’s taking it out on Logan. Bella is amused, recalling what a nightmare she was for Mackenzie when she was dating Colby, and tells her to try and fix it. Downstairs, Nikau tells John he’s finished off the list. John has to attend an emergency committee meeting so gives Nikau the keys to the Polaris, telling him to back it out and give it a service.
Dean tells Ziggy that he’s cancelled all the lessons for next week. Ziggy is shocked but Dean says he’s got no instructors. Mackenzie turns up and Dean suspects she’s there to give him a lecture about quitting surfing. In fact, she’s there to talk to him about Logan but Dean isn’t keen to discuss that either and leaves the room. Later, Mackenzie talks to Ziggy about it. Ziggy explains about the operation Tori wanted Logan to have and how he’ll never know if it could have made things better. Mackenzie retorts that without Logan Dean would be dead. She is worried she’ll end up having to choose between them. After Mackenzie’s gone, Dean emerges. Ziggy warns him not to come between Logan and Mackenzie, and says she’s grateful that Dean’s still alive thanks to Logan.
Alf encourages Martha to eat but she isn’t feeling up to it. Roo brings her a package from her art class. Alf suggests she do some drawing after a rest, despite the lack of view. Logan turns up and, on learning Martha’s homesick, suggests home dialysis might be a possibility. At the Morgan house, Theo tries to convince Justin to film him doing burnouts in the car but Justin considers it too dangerous. He tries to get him to quit the challenges.
Theo finds Nikau working on the Polaris outside the surf club and suggests he could replace Ryder as his partner. Nikau says he’s done with social media. Theo claims there’s someone drowning in the water. Nikau goes to have a look and Theo drives off in the Polaris. Nikau runs inside where Bella is working on the quote. He tells her what’s happened. John comes over: The committee meeting and the treasurer’s threats are over, so he’s going to use the Polaris to check out the pools. Bella tries to stall him, but eventually Nikau admits he doesn’t have the keys…or the Polaris.
Martha looks through the literature which says she could have dialysis at home while she sleeps. Roo tells her she might not be suitable and they might get a transplant first anyway. Martha is upset that something good might be taken away and Alf tries to reassure her. At Salt, Bella rings Ryder and asks for Theo’s number but he hangs up on her. Nikau thinks Theo wouldn’t answer anyway and worries his lifesaving career is over. Logan and Mackenzie come in. Logan thinks maybe he and Dean aren’t meant to be friends, but on seeing what it means to Mackenzie, he decides to go and see him…with ammunition.
Theo is driving the buggy through a park area, filming himself and giving a commentary, including saying he’d kiss Chloe again. The trip comes to an abrupt end when the fuel runs out so Theo just abandons the vehicle. Meanwhile, Ziggy lets Logan into the farm house. He presents a bewildered Dean with beer and pizza and sits down next to him, saying it’s important to Mackenzie that they get along so he’ll camp out if he has to. Dean says there’s a game on in five minutes and not to talk through it.
Martha is annoyed when Roo tries to help her into bed. Alf says they’ll leave her to get some rest and promises to get her home soon. Once they’re back home, Roo chides Alf for making promises he might not be able to keep. Ryder comes in and asks about Martha before telling them he can pay half the money he owes…but it’s Chloe’s half and she’s bought him out of the business, so he might have trouble getting them the rest. They’re fine with waiting.
Theo arrives home to be confronted by John and Justin. He thought Nikau wouldn’t dob him in about stealing the Polaris. Justin tells him he’s crossed a line and John points out he committed a crime and could be reported to the police. Justin says it’s not so funny now.
