Extended Summary

Ryder and Chloe run into each other at the Diner and ask each other about Tane and Martha. Ryder apologises for embarrassing her and Chloe apologises for staying out all night with Theo. Ryder asks if anything happened and gets a stony silence in response. He offers her a lift to the hospital. Meanwhile, Mia finds Ari at the snack machine. He apologises for snapping at her and says he can sort out the reference after the business with Tane is over, although he’s not sure it will do any good. Mia says she’ll let the lawyer know. After she’s gone, Ari hits the machine in frustration. Alf and Justin come along and Justin offers to take Ari for a walk.

Felicity is in her caravan, looking anxious. She phones the hospital to check on Tane but isn’t given any information. When there is a knock on the door, she looks scared and is relieved when it turns out to be Anne, who she’d summoned. Back at the hospital, Theo turns up in Leah’s room with flowers and a giant teddy bear, who he dubs Bernice. Seeing Chloe in the corridor, he quickly grabs one of the flowers and chases after her, only to find Ryder with her. Ryder queries the flower and Theo says it’s for the nurses. Ryder and Chloe head off to check on her family.

Ari and Justin are walking along the beach. Ari explains about snapping at Mia and about the adoption plans. He notes they’ve been told to forget about it because of his criminal record. Justin suggests he could still make it happen. At the hospital, Mia has filled in Nikau. Ryder and Chloe arrive and Mia says they’re waiting to see if the drugs work. Ryder goes to find Alf. Chloe wonders who’d do this. Nikau says he’s got a good idea.

On the beach, Felicity explains to Anne that it doesn’t look good that this happened straight after the AVO and even Cash suspects her. Anne asks where she was and Felicity says she was alone in her van, so she wants Anne to tell the police that she was with her. Back at the hospital, Nikau has explained to Ari, Mia and Chloe about Felicity taking out the AVO against Tane. Chloe recalls seeing them fighting. Ari says Cash didn’t mention it. Nikau thinks he’s protecting her.

Anne and Felicity head to Salt. Felicity doesn’t want to hide because it would make her look guilty. Anne sits her down and agrees to cover for her. She suggests they say that they walked her dog and then baked biscuits together. Back at the hospital, Alf is fretting about how long it’s taking to run tests. Ryder suggests Alf go home and recharge but Alf wants to be there when Martha comes back.

Theo and Leah reminisce about her visiting him in hospital when he had his tonsils out. Justin arrives to collect Leah and doesn’t seem too interested in a catch-up. Theo leaves. Justin is bemused by the bear. Leah tells him not to read anything into it. Meanwhile, Ari joins Mia and Chloe, having failed to get hold of Nikau. Ari asks to talk to Mia in private. He suggests that they take his name off the adoption application. Mia refuses however, saying she wants to have a baby with him.

Felicity thanks Anne for agreeing to help. Nikau comes in and angrily accuses Felicity of trying to kill Tane. Anne threatens to call the police but Nikau says Cash can’t save Felicity. Theo, who has just entered, steps in and takes Nikau outside. Soon after, Anne and Felicity have gone for a walk. Felicity says it started out as a bit of fun but she liked Tane and now he might die. Anne says it’s not her fault and promises to have her back.

Near the Diner, Nikau tells Theo about the roses being left for Tane and how Tane warned Felicity off. Theo suggests they go for a coffee. Meanwhile, Justin and Leah are walking through the caravan park. Justin makes a pointed comment about wanting it to just be the two of them, realising Leah wants Theo to move in. Leah says that he’s making friends and turning his life around, plus he’s family. Justin agrees and they walk off, holding Bernice between them.

Ryder brings Alf some sandwiches which he says he got from the nurses’ fridge. Alf says the tests confirmed Martha’s lungs are crook. He says Martha’s his life and it can’t end like this. Ryder goes to see Chloe at the Parata house, where she’s been making up meals for when people need them. He says she doesn’t have to answer the question he asked before. Chloe says she and Theo didn’t sleep together or kiss, but the fact it came up shows she and Ryder aren’t working. She notes Ari and Mia never doubt each other despite their rough patches. Ryder asks if it’s to do with Theo. Chloe says he wouldn’t ask if he believed in them. Ryder accepts it’s not going to work.

At the Diner, Theo gets a text from Leah about moving in and tells Nikau that it means he gets her cooking all the time. Nikau says he’s going to catch up with Bella and then head home, inviting him to come. Theo hears Chloe will be there and says it might be awkward, since they hung up on the beach all night. Nikau asks what exactly he’s saying but Theo says he doesn’t kiss and tell.
