Extended Summary

At the Diner, John thanks Irene for helping him out with the tickets to the fundraiser, calling her his fairy godmother. He notes he needs a new suit. Alf enters and says he’s wearing the suit from his wedding. Irene suggests John do the same but John admits his wedding suit doesn’t fit anymore. Martha comes in and tells Alf and Roo she’s finished her painting for the fundraiser, although she won’t show it to them yet. At Salt, Mackenzie is assuming that Logan is going to move with his job. Bella and Nikau come in. Bella complains about being summoned by Chloe and expected to get pizza. She goes over to talk to Mackenzie about Dean moving out. Eager to avoid the conversation with Logan, Mackenzie says they’ll discuss it now.

Theo, in a faux cheery manner, calls himself and Ryder a bromance. Ryder wonders what Theo and Chloe were talking about before and Theo claims she was giving him relationship advice. Bella and Nikau come in and Chloe introduces them both to Theo. Chloe drags Bella out the back for a girl’s chat. Ryder is confused but Theo claims Chloe said she was missing her. He refuses to leave and asks Ryder to make the drinks. Outside, Bella is shocked that Chloe wants a party tonight and asks if she’s sure Ryder wants it. Chloe asks who doesn’t like surprises and Bella says Ryder and her. Chloe says there’ll be cocktails and dancing and she just wants Ryder to have a good time. Bella agrees to help.

Mackenzie is cleaning tables, seemingly in an attempt to avoid Logan. He notes the first things he noticed about her were that she was sexy and confident. Mackenzie says she can’t make the decision for him and Logan says he has to make a decision by the end of the day. Roo and Martha turn up with the seating plan and Mackenzie is eager to go over it with them. Meanwhile, Bella and Nikau arrive at the Diner. They tell Irene, who is with Alf and John, that they need to make a birthday cake for Ryder’s 21st birthday party. John tells the story of his 21st: He was in the navy in the South China Sea and his shipmates kidnapped him, tied him up and drank all his beer. Nikau goes outside to take a phone call.

Bella follows Nikau out and hears him apparently arranging to meet someone. He claims he just went outside to avoid John’s story and the call was board shop stuff. When Bella presses, he says he was arranging rosters. At the surf club, John comments to Logan that they have a connection because of both being in the military. He recalls his son was Afghanistan and was hurt but is doing well now because of blokes like Logan. Mackenzie comes downstairs and says that she thought Logan would have gone. Logan says he’s not going to make his decision until he’s spoken to her.

Theo is telling Chloe that he won’t be DJing himself, but they clam up when Ryder comes back in. Chloe tells him they have a last minute order and asks him to go and get the ingredients. Ryder is surprised she isn’t helping. Theo claims she is giving him a hand with a TAFE application and he didn’t want Leah to know in case he disappointed her. Ryder asks about him saying that he was asking for relationship advice and Theo claims he’s going because there’s hot chicks there. At the surf club, Roo and Martha discuss the seating arrangements. Alf comes over and tells Roo he thinks they need to do something more than the dinner for Ryder’s birthday and he has an idea.

Bella and Nikau are helping Irene make the cake. Bella tenses up when Nikau checks his phone. Ryder arrives with the ingredients and Nikau takes them off him into the kitchen. Ryder asks Bella if she’s noticed anything between Theo and Chloe, saying he doesn’t trust him. Bella asks if he got a lot of calls about the board shop. Ryder says it was mostly walk-ins, and since the board shop has a landline, he doesn’t know why Nikau would be getting calls on his mobile. Meanwhile, Mackenzie and Logan are walking by the beach. Logan isn’t sure what he’d do for work if he left the unit but says he likes doing new things. Mackenzie jokingly notes he’d be too impatient to be a waiter before saying she’s only just stopped doing crazy things and doesn’t want to be the one to ruin his life. She tells him to go.

Chloe insists to Theo that Ryder deserves a special night: She has spent her money on a VIP lounge despite being in debt. She suddenly realises Ryder’s at the Diner and she needs to get him to the club. After a few pointed looks, Theo says he’ll sort something. At Salt, Mackenzie is moaning to Bella that she wanted to stay out of it so it was Logan’s decision and instead she’s told him to leave town. She thinks it’s different to Bella and Nikau since she doesn’t know Logan that well. Bella admits she’s not sure if she trusts Nikau before pointing out Mackenzie referred to Logan as her big potential love.

At the Diner, Alf, Roo, Ryder and Martha crowd around a laptop and John and Irene watch from the counter as the auction ends. Alf, Roo and Martha head home. John starts to tell Ryder the story of his 21st. Irene interrupts and gives Ryder a slice of cake with a candle on it on behalf of the Diner. On the balcony at Salt, Mackenzie runs into Logan. He tells her he’s resigned from the unit and it’s entirely his decision: He’d like to see where things go between them.

At the Parata house, Bella notices Nikau’s phone get a text. After some deliberation, she goes to look at the phone just as Nikau comes back in. He tells her that either she’s forgiven him or she hasn’t. Bella says she has but it’s hard to forget. Nikau reminds her what she said about moving on. Bella asks to leave it until after the party. Chloe appears and asks where their party frocks are, before assuring Bella Ryder getting there is under control. Meanwhile, Ryder is wandering around outside the Diner and tries to text Chloe. Theo suddenly puts a hood over his head from behind and drags him away.
