Will Mason be sentenced to jail time? Are Brody and Simone finally leaving the Bay for good? Marilyn considers the possibility of joining John and Jett in the city on a permanent basis.
Extended Summary
Mason asks Raffy’s opinion on his suit. Raffy has made him breakfast but senses he’s not up to it so gets him coffee instead. Justin enters with Leah, who has brought muffins. Mason is nervous but slightly more confident now he has the letter from Tori, who was up all night writing it. Outside, Tori reads the letter to Justin and Leah. Brody and Simone arrive and the others are surprised they made it, as are Mason and Raffy when they join them. Leah says her goodbyes and Justin thanks her for coming. Brody dodges questions about what they did and offers to drive them to court; Justin is doing that so asks Brody to take Raffy to Marilyn. Mason gets hugs off Raffy and Brody as he goes; Brody and Simone touch Raffy supportively.
Leah tries to talk to Marilyn about Mason but Marilyn is distracted by John’s absence. Roo joins them and wonders if Marilyn’s had any more thoughts about moving away. She suggests John will change his mind but Marilyn isn’t so sure. Outside, Alf complains to Marilyn that John being there is getting in the way of Jett’s independence. Seeing Brody and Raffy approach, Marilyn asks Alf not to mention anything to her. Raffy tells Brody it’s her fault if Mason goes to jail because she pushed him into doing the trial. She sends Brody to work. Marilyn offers Raffy blueberry pancakes but instead she gets teary.
Brody joins Simone outside the surf club: There is a Sold sign hanging from Salt. Brody notes he’s feeling both sick and excited but is looking forward to their new start and also pleased that the new owner intends to keep the staff on. They head upstairs where Brody sorts out an inventory and Simone arranges rosters to cover until the new manager gets there. She asks Brody when he’s going to tell his family they’re leaving tomorrow. He says he’s waiting until they hear about Mason…and accepts that if it’s bad news he will make it worse.
At the Diner, Leah and Marilyn attempt to reassure Raffy, who feels that everyone she loves leaves. Leah suggests Marilyn take her back to the Morgans’ with Roo offering to cover at work. At the Morgans’, Marilyn puts some cookies in the oven. Raffy is curled up with Buddy and rushes outside when she hears someone there but it’s Brody and Simone. She worries that they haven’t heard anything and suggests calling Justin. However, Mason then appears with Tori and Justin: He’s a free man.
Inside, Mason explains that the judge released him under Section 10: There’s no conditions and no criminal record will be filed. He thanks Tori for her letter. Justin warns him that the judge won’t be so lenient if he does anything else. Marilyn makes her excuses and they thank her for everything, including the cookies. Brody starts to make an announcement, then simply says he’s shouting them lunch at Salt. Simone quietly comments on it being a stalling tactic. At the Diner, Marilyn has filled Leah in. Leah wonders if the development has helped her. Marilyn admits if Mason had gone to jail she’d have had to stay for Raffy but now she’s thinking about Jett.
The family have gathered at Salt. Tori approaches Mason who is pleased with how things went for him but thinks it hasn’t changed anything for Raffy, who’s still getting seizures and isn’t on the trial. Tori says it’s thanks to him that she’s on the list. Mason says he isn’t going to stop; Tori looks worried and he assures her he simply means he’s going to be an advocate legally. As Brody serves the food, Simone encourages him to tell everyone, before heading off to pack. At the Diner, Leah is filling Alf and Roo in. Marilyn gets off the phone from John. She isn’t sure when he’s coming back and feels she should be in the city with him.
Mason is tucking into the food, saying it’s not often Brody fits the bill. Brody tells them it’s his last day in charge of Salt and the new owner arrives at the end of the week. He adds that he and Simone have bought a new restaurant with a vineyard…in the Yarra Valley. Everyone is shocked, especially when he says he’s going tomorrow. Raffy looks increasingly upset and rushes out. Mason goes after her, catching up with her on the beach. She notes that she’s losing Brody instead of him, and that this wouldn’t have happened if he was still with Ziggy. Mason says Brody and Simone were always going to have a fresh start and they should try and be happy for them. Raffy refuses to go back.
Justin and Tori ask Brody why he didn’t get somewhere closer. He says he wasn’t keen himself at first but they can always come and visit. Tori asks about Simone’s teaching and he notes that was only a stopgap. He says it gets them away from Ziggy and her family and being judged, asking them to be excited for him. At the Diner, Simone gets a text from Brody saying he told them. She tells Alf she’ll be vacating the caravan tomorrow. Raffy rushes in with Mason in tow and has a go at Simone as Leah, Roo and Marilyn look on, saying she broke up Brody’s marriage and now their family. She runs out and Marilyn goes after her.
Marilyn finds Raffy sitting on the wharf. Raffy assures her she’s not going to have a seizure but is still upset about Brody going. Marilyn says this is what happens when people grow up: Things change and they move on. Raffy notes Marilyn always knows the right thing to say. At Salt, Simone finds Brody sitting alone. He admits his family didn’t take things that well but is still committed to the idea and says they should just go that night. Simone says that would kill his family.
Marilyn has dropped Raffy off with Justin and Tori, with Tori thanking her for her help. Brody comes to the door as Raffy notes he won’t be there for Tori giving birth or her passing Year 12 or Leah and Justin getting married. Justin thinks the last one is a bit premature. Brody steps into view, saying he can always come back and he’ll give Justin and Leah a special wedding deal. Raffy hugs him and says she’ll miss him. Justin follows Brody outside; Simone is clearing out the cottage. Brody says he’s going to leave first thing. Justin suggests he drop by the Astonis’ first. Brody thinks Ziggy won’t care but Justin thinks he owes it to her.
Brody joins Simone in the cottage. He tells her what Justin said. Simone agrees with him. Brody thinks Ziggy will probably slam the door in his face but Simone says that if she does then at least Brody’s tried to do the right thing. Brody sends her to pack up her van while he sorts his way through the last of his stuff. In a box, he finds clippings of his reviews and concert tickets, then the brochure for the honeymoon cruise and photos of him and Ziggy.
