Extended Summary

Ben is alone on the beach. Back at the house, Coco asks Maggie why she wrote the letters. Maggie says she didn’t want to leave things unsaid. Even though she didn’t mean for them to get them yet, she tells them they can read the letters now if they want. Ziggy decides to go and look for Ben. Maggie encourages Coco to go with her. Coco isn’t keen on leaving Maggie but Maggie insists she’ll be fine.

At the Palmer house, Marilyn checks what Ty and Raffy are doing; Ty is planning to watch TV while Raffy has an assignment to do. John announces he’s going out, since the casual that was meant to be running the gelato bar has let him down, but Marilyn reminds him Ty and Raffy aren’t meant to be left alone. Marilyn decides Raffy can come to the Diner with her.

At the Morgan house, Brody makes fun of Hunter and Mason using the dating app. Hunter says he had a nice conversation with a girl who binned him for misspelling “your”. (He blames auto-correct.) Brody says it’s a shame there isn’t a place for meeting girls in real life, then “remembers” there’s bars. Mason argues that if you see a girl in one, you don’t know if she’s single and/or straight. Brody recalls a guy asked to organise a singles night at Salt: He didn’t think there’d be a market but Hunter and Mason have changed his mind. Hunter stumbles across Olivia’s dating photo.

Alf and Roo are near the beach and see Ben, Ziggy and Coco; Ben tells the girls to go on ahead. Alf and Roo note it doesn’t look good. Ben realises he’s the subject of attention and Roo awkwardly waves to him; Ben nods in response. Meanwhile, Maggie is lying down on her bed. She hears a car and Roo calling out and calls for her to come in. Roo tells her about seeing Ben.

Ziggy and Coco walk along the beach. Coco wonders if Ziggy’s going to read the letter. Ryder approaches and tells them he’s got a job at the gelato bar. Sensing their mood, he wonders what’s wrong. Coco tells him it’s not his problem anymore. Back at the house, Maggie wonders what she can do about Ben. Roo suggests that it’s not something she can fix. Maggie has said the letters were written with love so hopefully if they read them, Ben and the girls can deal with that.

Ziggy asks Brody’s opinion on reading the letter. A part of her wants to throw it away so Maggie has to say it herself. Brody says he’d read it, since he’d give anything to know what his mother felt before she died. He wonders if Ziggy can risk not finding out what Maggie has to say. At the Diner, Leah, Marilyn and Olivia are behind the counter as Mason and Hunter come in, with Mason distributing flyers for the singles night. (He assures them the guy organising it did them.) Hunter isn’t keen on going himself however. Marilyn encourages Olivia to go but she is very reluctant.

John comes home for his wallet, surprising Ty who thought he’d be out all day. John is slightly exasperated that Ty has been on the couch all day. He tells him they want the arrangement to work and Ty says he does too. Ty gets a text and says Ryder wants to hang out, heading off. At the Diner, Raffy is on her laptop and gets a text that she tells Marilyn is also from Ryder. She insists she’s basically finished the assignment so Marilyn lets her go.

John finds Ben near the beach and Ben tells him about the letters. John suggests Maggie wrote them for peace of mind but Ben isn’t ready to hear it. John leads him to Gina’s bench, explaining she died suddenly of an aneurysm five years ago. He wishes the last thing he’d said to her had been more profound than “Where are we stopping for lunch?” and tells Ben not to waste time. At Salt, Ziggy and Brody are watching over Coco; Ryder asked Ziggy to get her there but Coco thinks they’re waiting for Ben. Ryder, Raffy and Ty turn up and Ziggy excuses herself. Ryder tells Coco she looked like she needed to have fun. Coco is surprised but grateful, with Brody offering them free pizza.

At the Diner, Olivia has come back for a meal, since Jasmine is out and the alternative was eating alone. Marilyn tries to suggest that going to the singles night might change that. John watches the exchange through the window, then comes in and puts his arms round Marilyn, telling her she makes him happy. They compare notes on Ty and Raffy and realise they both said they were meeting Ryder, suspecting they’ve been played. Meanwhile, Mason and Hunter arrive back at the Morgan house from distributing the flyers. Hunter still isn’t keen to go, thinking he’ll just be rejected by a load of beautiful women, but Mason says he’ll drag him there if he has to.

Brody and Ziggy are on the beach. Ziggy says she has to read the letter and Brody gives her privacy. At the same time, Ben reads his letter not too far away. Maggie tells Ziggy she felt complete when she was born and tells Ben he’s the love of her life, saying he now has to be brave and face the world without her. She says similar to Ziggy, telling her to look after Ben and be happy and that she regrets that she won’t get to walk her down the aisle. Ben returns home and hugs Maggie.

Coco has taken Ryder to one side in Salt and apologises for being sharp before, thanking him. Ryder notes things have been weird since they broke up. John and Marilyn march over to Raffy and Ty and accuse them of lying. The pair are bemused so John and Marilyn ask where Ryder is…just as he and Coco come back. John and Marilyn beat an embarassed retreat, Marilyn a bit more graciously than John. Brody and Ziggy come back and go into a store room for a quick chat. Brody offers to take time off to be with her but Ziggy declines and they joke about the singles night being full of weirdos like Mason. Ziggy is left alone, looking thoughtful.

Later in the evening, Hunter and Mason give Brody details of around forty people who signed up. Olivia comes up and says they can add her to the list, blaming Marilyn for bullying her into it. She adds that she also saw Hunter’s dating profile and advises him to lose the topless photo. Coco leaves her friends to join Ziggy on the balcony. Coco says she’s decided not to read the letter: She’ll keep it and hope she never has to read it. Ziggy says Maggie’s scared of not being at her wedding so she wants to do something about it: She’s going to ask Brody to marry her.
