In this single episode of Home and Away, a 30-year retcon changes the history of the show forever as Alf Stewart reveals to his daughter, Roo Stewart, that her mother is alive.
The facts we know:
- Martha was said to have drowned in 1985 during a sailing accident.
- They held a funeral for her
- Alf’s grief was the catalyst for him deciding to sell Summer Bay House, as he couldn’t bear to live there any more. With the Fletchers buying it, it acted as part of the foundation for the show’s beginning.
- She was very close to Morag (it was Martha who coined the nickname Bugsy for her), they’d been friends since they were kids.
- Martha was the only person in the bay who knew the secret of Bobby’s parentage, always tried to look out for Bobby, and acted as a go-between for Morag to send money to Al & Doris Simpson on a monthly basis. When she ‘died’ that money stopped (Morag had stipulated that she didn’t want to know who Bobby had been given to, nor should they know who she was) and Al turned to gambling and crime, making Doris and Bobby’s life a living hell in the process.
