Shauna first appeared, running late for an interview for the surf club’s full-time lifeguard position. Despite the fact that she had three years professional experience, Vinnie hired her based on her looks. When Alf learns of her appointment, he told Vinnie to reverse his decision. Shauna was livid when she learnt of this and threatened to sue Alf for discrimination. As a result, Alf withdrew his direction. She quickly became the object of Adam’s affection and he convinced her to move in to James’ house. Soon enough, she realised he only did it to live with her, which left her unimpressed. Despite this, Shauna accepted when James offered her the second spare room.
Adam’s continued attempts to woo Shauna turned her off more and more. To bring him down a peg, she organised a surf triathlon. Shauna was confident she would win, but after learning that Adam is renowned for playing dirty, she enlisted James’ help to also cheat. She won the competition and not only gained gloating rights over Adam, but proved herself to Alf. However, the living situation continued in a hostile manner when her underwear turned up in Adam’s bedroom. It soon became clear she had a stalker, after hearing someone outside her window, but believed it to be Adam. James kicked him out and word got around that Adam had preyed on his new housemate. He left town not long after, and although Shauna believed the stalking had stopped, she got a fright when a brick was thrown through the kitchen window. Meanwhile, she was left unimpressed with another male in town, when Harry Keller drove through a puddle and drenched her whilst she was out on a run.
After finding all her clothes folded, Shauna realised that her former roommate Jillian was in town, now going under the pseudonym of Amber. Shauna confronted her in the diner and she was arrested, vowing to return should James hurt her. She and Harry began to grow closer, but Shauna found herself withdrawing from him, believing it was too soon after her breakup with her ex, Darryl to pursue another relationship. When she and Harry got locked together in the boat shed during a deluge, they almost kissed, but he ran off before they could. After narrowly avoiding a plane crash, Shauna learnt that Harry was in the witness protection program. Her life was in danger when a hitman came after him, but they were able to overpower him. The event resulted in them admitting their mutual feelings. When Harry returned, Shauna learnt he used to be engaged, and his ex, Alison, believed they were still together.
The arrival of Alison tested Shauna’s relationship with Harry and she was hurt to learn he wasn’t telling Alison the truth about his relationship with her. When Alison was called back to the US, Shauna broke up with him and told him to follow her. He had a change of mind on the way to the airport, and she was thrilled when he returned for her. The pair had their first tiff when he paid off her credit card without talking to her first.
Shauna contemplated quitting lifesaving after ignoring Vinnie’s urge to close the beach because of a worsening rip due to her own ego. She also stood by Harry when he was accused of inappropriate conduct by a student. Soon enough, it became apparent that Shauna had a phobia of dogs. She admitted she was attacked when she was seven years old, and has never recovered. To try to help, Harry purchased Shauna a puppy. The pair clashed after Harry purchased Will’s motorcyle. Shauna revealed that her cousin was killed in a motorcycle accident, and eventually offered him an ultimatum: her or the bike. She soon realised the error of her ways and apologised, however Gypsy’s car crash saw Harry sell the bike back to Ken.
After being tricked into giving him mouth to mouth, Shauna refused to believe that Duncan was missing at sea. When it became obvious he was lost, she launched an full scale investigation. Ailsa overhead Shauna admitting her guilt to Leah, and had her suspended from the surf club. Once Duncan was found, Ailsa apologised and she was reinstated. As her and Harry’s relationship began to head up, Shauna was surprised to hear he was planning to propose. She admitted that the timing wasn’t right. Eventually, she confessed that she didn’t agree with the institution of marriage, which led to her moving into her own room at the house. He eventually moved out to allow their friendship the space it required to continue.
Shauna was surprised to see her aunt Kate O’Connor arrive in Summer Bay. It was evident that the pair shared a close bond, but it eventually emerged that Kate and Ailsa had known each other in prison. As Shauna bid adieu to her aunt, Ailsa confessed the truth behind her connection to Kate. They had shared a cell in prison. When Ailsa was raped by a guard, she fell pregnant and following Kate’s release, she organised for the baby to be raised by her sister Margaret. It was Kate who suggested that Shauna move to the Bay in a bid to connect mother and daughter. Shauna’s adoptive mother visited and revealed that she was adopted when Shauna questioned why she didn’t have any photos of her as a child. It didn’t take long for Shauna to put the pieces of the puzzle together and confront Ailsa. She and Harry reconciled in the aftermath and made plans to leave the Bay. She later changed her mind.
The pair found themselves gravitating back to one another, but decided to take it slow. When it became obvious to Shauna that Ailsa was avoiding her, she followed her to Victoria as she confronted the demons of her past. It was there that Ailsa had accepted killing her father and introduced Shauna as her daughter to an old neighbour. Shauna and Harry finally drew a line through their relationship after Harry bought another motorcycle. The awkwardness remained between the couple for several weeks. Whilst on patrol, Shauna was confronted by a drinking beach-goer. When he was rude to her, Gavin Campbell stepped in to help. She was disappointed to learn he was married. Despite her wishes, Gavin persisted in trying to get Shauna, telling her about how toxic their relationship is.
Gavin persistence in chasing Shauna resulted in them agreeing to go to a concert together, albeit platonically. Afterwards, the pair shared a kiss. Shauna’s confusion over her feelings fell by the wayside when the pair began an affair. It wasn’t long before the wider Summer Bay community found out and condemned the pair. Gavin’s wife Alicia eventually uncovered the affair and confronted Shauna. Not long after, her body was found at the bottom of a cliff face. A police investigation ensued and Shauna was the number one suspect, however was cleared by Duncan’s testimony that she had slipped. A week later, she was caught in a mudslide and was saved by Gavin. Tragedy later struck when the Stewart House exploded, killing Gavin, leaving her heartbroken.
Following Gavin’s death, Shauna found herself withdrawn from every day life, and sought comfort in Harry. Unbeknownst to her, Harry was still in love with Shauna. The pair both left town around the same time and returned together, causing rumours that they were together. Harry confessed his feelings to Shauna, which led to his relationship with Gypsy ending. Whilst painting the new Diner, Shauna met Jude Lawson and she advised him that the business space was no longer available to rent. A few days later, Shauna collapsed after a run and was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Shauna was distraught to learn this but found comfort in Jude. The following week, Shauna had a pacemaker fitted.
Shauna found herself growing closer to Jude and he asked her out. She jumped on the back of his motorbike, despite her hatred of them, to get away from Harry. Not long after, Ailsa died from a heart attack. The shock of her passing pushed Shauna to seek the truth about her father’s identity. Although reluctant, Alf revealed to Shauna that she was the product of rape.
Jude and Shauna continued to grow closer, but despite his best attempts, their first kiss kept going awry. After he was beaten up helping Irene and Noah, Shauna kissed him, not wanting to wait any longer. She invited Duncan to move into the share house temporarily, and he soon caused issues between friends when he threatened Leah. Duncan apologised and found his feet in the house when Alf decided to visit Roo in the States. After some doubts in her career, Shauna quit lifesaving and pursued a Diploma of Education at TAFE, with the intention of becoming a PDHPE teacher at Summer Bay High. When she began teaching, she clashed with Fisher over her attire when she wore a crop top in one of her classes.
Soon after starting at Summer Bay High, she came student Kane Phillips who was immediately enamoured by her. As his affection grew, Jude confronted him and Kane later ended up in hospital, beaten up. He alleged that Jude had done it, resulting in his arrest, but soon admitted to Shauna that his drug dealer brother Scott was the culprit. Shauna pleaded with Kane to reveal the truth, to no avail. Backed into a corner, Shauna recorded Kane admitting the truth. Kane told Scott and the pair kidnapped her and held her captive, with Scott contemplating killing her. With a police investigation under way, Shauna and Kane teamed up against Scott and were almost able to escape. Jude showed up to save them and inadvertently pushed Scott off the roof. Jude then asked Shauna to move in with him. Shauna agreed to think about it, and in the end, decided that she wanted more: she asked Jude to marry her. Fearful she’d scared him off, Shauna was placated when Jude arrived at the school with a ring box, disguised as an apple.she had scared him off, Shauna was touched when Jude gave her a ring, from inside a ring box, disguised as an apple.
Following the announcement of their engagement, Shauna and Jude went for a romantic breakfast on a boat. Jude was knocked unconscious and into the water and Shauna was forced to jump in to save him. Once he was rescued, Shauna collapsed and it was revealed she had had a heart attack. Shauna was released a week later and informed Jude that she had decided she didn’t want children to prevent passing on her genetic heart condition. Shauna was put off by newcomer Flynn Saunders, however Sally saw through her façade and realised she had a crush on him. As the weeks went on, Shauna hid her developing feelings until the pressure of the wedding discussions became too much. She got drunk and asked Flynn to pick her up. Back at his caravan, where she was trying to sober up so no one would see her intoxicated, Shauna revealed she was in love with Flynn.
When Jude returned from a trip to the City for a law interview, Shauna broke off their engagement. He was heartbroken and when she tried to talk to him, he rode off and crashed his motorcycle. It was soon revealed by Jude that Shauna had feelings for Flynn, resulting in her and Sally falling out. When Sally made it clear their friendship was over, Shauna moved in with Alf. With the people she held closest now refusing to talk to her, Shauna begins to entertain the idea of applying for a teaching job in Melbourne. When June returned, she helped Shauna make up her mind to make the move. Following a final farewell to Ailsa with Alf, making headway towards a reconciliation with Sally, and apologising to Jude, Shauna headed to Melbourne for a new life.
