Bobby, Selina and Marilyn all lost a baby in 1990, 1996 and 1997 respectively.

But miscarriages have become a lot more often in Home and Away and I was wondering who has lost a baby in the past 12 years.

From memory, I can think of four characters that have had one miscarriage and with Leah having two miscarriages in recent years.

Rachel Armstrong was pregnant with Doctor Lewis Reed's child, only to lose it due to a miscarriage.

She fell pregnant by him and delightedly gave him the news only for him to react badly. He returned a few days later to apologise but at that point Rachel had miscarried and told Lewis that they wanted different things and asked him to leave."

Martha MacKenzie was pregnant with Roman Harris's child but suffered a miscarriage.

"Soon after Martha discovered she was pregnant but she didn't know if Jack or Roman was the father. She didn't tell Jack initially but Roman figured it out for himself. When she did eventually tell Jack he was over the moon and assumed the baby was his. However, when Jack found out that Roman had a DNA testing kit he put two and two together. Jack was devastated that he might not be the father and went missing temporarily, which upset Martha. When he returned they decided that they wouldn't find out who the father was until the baby was born.

Just as things seemed like they were back on track, Martha found a lump in her breast which turned out to be cancer. Martha was totally devastated but remained focused on her baby rather than her own health. She then decided to have a mastectomy to increase her chances of survival. Following the operation Martha decided to have a DNA test to find out who the father of the baby was once and for all. When it turned out to be Roman, Jack was upset but vowed to stand by Martha. Despite needing chemo to help fight her cancer, Martha refused to terminate the pregnancy to have the treatment. Jack tried to persuade her but Martha was adamant that having the baby was too important to her. When Martha returned home she tried to push Jack away as she didn't want him to see her scars. After a while Martha felt comfortable enough to show him her body and their relationship got back on track.

When Rachel went missing before her wedding, Martha helped try and find out what happened to her. However, Martha felt ill and Jack took her to the hospital immediately. She was then diagnosed with a blood clot on her lung and Martha struggled to deal with yet another blow. Jack and Martha then decided to get married straight away in the hospital grounds. Following the ceremony, Martha collapsed and she was rushed straight into the hospital. Jack and her family watched as the doctors attempted to revive her. Just as everyone thought all hope was lost, Martha heart started beating again. Unfortunately the ordeal proved too much for the baby and she didn't survive. This devastated Martha and caused her to struggle to focus on her own recovery. Colleen suggested a memorial ceremony to say goodbye to baby Lindsay and this seemed to help Martha move on."

Sam Holden was pregnant with Jack Holden's child in 2008 but lost the baby.

"When Jack returned home, Sam was still there, and she had a surprise for him - she was pregnant. If he still wanted to turn her in, she would run and take the baby and Rory with her, and he'd never see any of them again.

Jack didn't change his mind. He was still going to turn her in, and he planned to take custody of both Rory and the baby. They fought about it, and Sam was accidentally pushed to the ground. She was rushed to hospital, but tests revealed that she had lost the baby, which settled it for Jack."

Kirsty Phillips was pregnant with Miles Copeland's child but lost the baby.

Miles suggested they get married and Kirsty turned him down, explaining to Irene that she thought having a baby together was commitment enough. She later decided she would marry him if he felt strongly about it but he told her they were fine as they were. When she saw Nicole with Liam, she was concerned about the relationship and asked Miles to talk to him. They babysat Harry for the day for Tony and Rachel and after a rough start Kirsty was left feeling they would be good parents. But that evening, she collapsed from meningitis and food poisoning. She was taken to hospital and had a fit which caused her to miscarry. She told Miles she felt it was her fault for not wanting the baby."

Leah was pregnant with Miles Copeland's child but also lost the baby.

"Leah was shocked when she found out she was pregnant, since she'd thought she couldn't have any more children. She worried about losing the baby and, after admitting the truth to Miles, considered an abortion but ultimately, after Miles made it clear he wanted to keep the baby, decided to go ahead with it. She tried to keep the pregnancy quiet but when Colleen found out and told Marilyn and Elijah they had to tell VJ. She was also shocked to learn Miles was still on anti-depressants and worried when VJ said he was worried they would split up, as she and Dan had as a result of her last pregnancy. She turned Miles down when he proposed to her, saying they'd be getting married for the wrong reasons, and suggested they move in together instead.

She tried to arrange time off work during the pregnancy, only for Irene to be evasive, so she gave Sasha a job. She was left trapped in the Diner during a storm with Elijah and VJ where she feared she was having a miscarriage. She was relieved when she got to the hospital and found it was a false alarm. However, she suffered a miscarriage for real a few weeks later and, when Miles told Alf and Roo, was angry and refused to let him stay with her after surgery. She continued to be distant towards him when she arrived home, going back to work and working late rather than go home with him and avoiding his attempt to discuss the matter. She freaked out when a delivery man brought a cot to the house and then told Sid she wanted a tubal ligation. When she learned Miles had stored the cot at the caravan park, she went round in a hysterical mood to dispose of it before admitting she didn't want any more children to both Miles and Elijah. She seemed disappointed when Miles said he was fine with that and continued to avoid him."

Leah was pregnant with Dan Baker's child but miscarried.

"The incident spelled the end of Dan and Leah's relationship, despite the fact that she was pregnant with his child.

...when she fell off a cliff and wound up in hospital she realised it was Dan she loved. The pair were reunited but further heartache was in store when Leah collapsed and was rushed to hospital with pneumonia subsequently losing her baby. Dan and Leah pushed each other away rather than supporting each other and despite staying together the cracks were already beginning to show."

Martha was pregnant with Ash Naden's child but terminated it rather than lose it through a miscarriage.

Didn't Kirsty also miscarry in 2004 as well? There was the fake baby which she faked miscarrying, then a few weeks later she realized she actually was pregnant - and then actually miscarried. I think it was around about May or June 2004...

And wasn't Marilyn's miscarriage in 1998 not 1997 - or am I wrong?

I think they made an irreversible mistake with Leah's character by having her miscarry a second child in 2011.

I didn't really follow that storyline all that closely. Was it really that bad?

^To be honest, I think the real mistake was making her pregnant in the first place, trampling over logic and continuity just to put her and Miles through more misery.Hopefully they've learned their lesson.
