Ok, this is a short chapter but I didn't want to lose impact (and if I've got this right, it should definatly have an impact).

Warning - Abuse and other sexual themes

Chapter 31

Aden sank down into a chair, covering his face with his hands. Part of him had known this was coming, but that didn't lessen the impact of the question. He lifted his head and ran his hands back through his hair, fingers linking briefly at the back of his neck before falling into his lap. Sweat trickled down his back, but inside he was ice cold. For all that he'd said to Nic, he knew that many people would judge him differently – purely because he was male. Belle perched on the arm of the chair, he hand resting on his shoulder. Silent but unwavering support, no matter what he chose to do. That alone gave him confidence, it was time to stop hiding.

“I'm not sure that 'understanding what Nic is going through' is an accurate description. What I can do is take an educated guess.”

Geoff looked totally confused, he had no idea what Aden was inferring.

“Okay, how can you take an educated guess? It's not like you're a shrink or anything!”

Aden laugh was humourless, bordering on bitter. The sound pulled Nic out of her own thoughts and focussed her attention, her mind jumping back to the talk she'd had with Aden...after her melt down.

“He's a graduate of the school of experience...that's how he could guess. It's also why he knew I was hiding something bad.”

Belle's shock at the summation was evident, she hadn't expected Nic to figure that much out. The side of Aden's mouth kicked up, a mere shadow of a smile.

“Bingo!”

Geoff sat down, he knew he was missing something important but for the life in him he couldn't figure out what it was.

“What happened Aden?”

The question was soft, Nic had taken Belle's previous spot on the floor cushion and was looking up at her surrogate big brother.

“You were lucky, he didn't get what he wanted.”

Aden stopped and took a few deep breaths, no-one said anything but Belle's hand tightened on his shoulder.

“I wasn't able to escape!”

The statement was quiet, pain haunting every syllable. He didn't dare look up, couldn't stand for his tears to be visible. Nicole's eyes widened as the meaning of Aden's words registered, he hadn't been able to escape...he'd been... Her mind instinctively shied away from finishing that thought, not wanting to fully accept the full horror that would be unavoidable if it did. She felt sick, but at the same time she still had questions. Her had crept up to hold Aden's.

“Who?”

“This towns greatest war hero...who else?”

The answer was filled with the hatred and bitterness of a decade.

“And just to complete one of the most dysfunctional family portraits of all time, my father knew and did nothing.”

Ignoring both Belle and her own boyfriend, Nicole pushed off the floor and wrapped her arms around Aden. He returned her hug, a silent acknowledgement of family support. Geoff had been sitting on the couch, gradually working through the implications of what he'd just listened to. He still couldn't really process what had been said.

“You saying that your Grandfather, one of the most respected men from this town, raped you?”

Aden winced as the truth was bluntly spelled out, the disbelief in the younger man's voice didn't help matters.

“Yes.”

He didn't feel the need to embellish his answer any further, no doubt Geoff would get to the point eventually.

“But...you're a guy!”

Aden's eyebrows rose to meet his hairline.

“An accurate observation.”

“The how could you possibly be raped? Are you gay or something?”
