I was really happy with my History Coursework because i got A*, I was doing well in it for a few months but in my yr 11 mock exams, I got a B, in one part and a D in another  so it averaged it down to a C, that was really annoying

I NEED HELP!! im doing my sociology coursework and i need everyones opinion. my project is based on gender and the media. here is the question and please please post your thoughts and comments on the topic.

HOW IS GENDER ROLES PORTRAYED IN THE MEDIA?

greatly appreciated .thank-you!! :)

The obvious one is advertising...the subliminal messages around gender sterotypes...

How succesful women are portratyed..often using masculine imagery...read the newspapers and look at the words they use to describe succesful women and the words they use to describe succesful men...the differences may be subtle but they are there..

The men and women on TV.....like presenters..newsreaders etc...the women have to be young, thin and have a certain look...

TV programmes...soaps....HaA, Corrie, EE, Neighbours, ...LOL...are there gender sterotypes here too?

Define gender...

It always annoys me that when a actress is having a interview, they are always asked' how do you juggle work and bring a family up'. But it is very occassionally asked of a actor. To me this always sounds terrible, as they both have the same roles in the house, so why does the woman feel under preassure to explain herself. Why Why.

Why cant we have both, the men seem to, but when we do there is a lurking question. Meaning that we are not taking care of our kids.

I have had my rant, and thrown my dummie out of the pram.:lol:

DO NOT get me started.... Ooops, too late!

Take the Ch 4 programme, Beauty and the Geek. This offends me more than almost anything on TV at the moment. The premise: beautiful women are pared with geeky guys, and they have to complete "challenges". The advert says something about how will the guys react to such stunning women, and then "will the girls learn anything?" Basically, then, it relies on the stereotype that intelligent people are all ugly losers and beautiful people are thick. And why is it not about ugly, clever women and hot, stupid men? That's not as entertaining, obviously.

The world is going mad. How come we, as humans, are willing to be fed this rubbish. I consider myself intelligent - does that mean I am a "geek" and automatically unattractive? But, the problem is definitely compounded by young women who are praised, and who build their careers on, being uneducated and doing/saying ignorant things - Paris Hilton, Jade Goody, Chantelle from Celeb BB. What sort of example does this set? And we are we suddenly holding glamour models up as celebrities - Abi Titmuss? If I had a daughter, I would be worried (notable exception is Kelly Brook who I actually really admire, as he is clearly a smart young woman who is going places. And Jordan who is clearly a shrewd businesswoman who knows exactly how to explout the media).

Even more though, it seems to be the norm for all female celebs to do nude shoots now, from soap stars to Keira Knightley, for God's sake. And yes, Keira's was more tasteful and less crude, but still completely gratuitous - why did she need to be naked? Then you get young women today saying, "I'm not a feminist, we don't need feminism nowadays." I always think to myself, "I'd be much more inclined to listen to you love if you put your top back on." How can any self-respecting young woman pose naked for a magazine who's advertising campaign revolves around the idea of females struggling with cars, DIY, etc, completely inept without the help of a big strong man, with the slogan "Women! Don't expect any help on a Thursday!" And think she has the right to talk to other girls about feminism.

I do think that men are often portrayed in a very negative way, as completely incompetent. But then again, those Bounty adverts (the kitchen roll, not the chocolate) get to me as well - for men to advertise cleaning products, lets dress them up as housewives.

I could say so much more. But I am aware I already sound like a bit of a crazy old bint so I won't. :P
