Extended Summary

Roo approaches Marilyn at the coffee cart and says she got a letter from Cohen. She notes he said very little about how he’s doing and was more concerned with how she is. Marilyn has to get something from the Diner so suggests they walk and talk. At the beach house, David has obviously filled Leah in on some of what’s happened. She says Lacey told her about the car crash but she didn’t know about all the trouble it’s caused. Leah and Theo leave, with Leah saying they’ll be plenty more chances for a barbecue. Outside, Leah hugs Theo, saying you keep your loved ones close when you hear a story like that.

Harper thinks the sound of someone at the door is Tane back but it turns out to be Eden. She drops off a wedding invite and says there’s a plus one on it and it’s up to her. Harper says Archie is having a nap and Tane’s camping with John and Mali; it takes Eden a short while to realise she’s serious. Eden asks about the dating app. Harper says she had a coffee date and he was nice but there was no chemistry. She says she has another one tonight at Salt. Eden is going to be there until 8pm so can keep an eye on things. Later, Tane does arrive back to find Harper in a towel. He explains John pulled the plug early. Harper says she had Dana lined up to babysit but he can do it. She says she has a date and that it’s not the guy from yesterday but a new one.

At the Diner, Roo reads Cohen’s letter to Marilyn and Leah; he says he loves being with his dad and his grandma’s nice but he misses her, Alf and Marilyn. Leah suggests he needs reassurance. At the counter, Lacey approaches Theo and asks about the barbecue. Theo tells her about Jo storming out. Lacey says Jo just told her David’s reopening the investigation. She goes round to the beach house and tells David what Theo and Jo have told her. She hugs him and thanks him. David remains stoneyfaced.

Tane is playing with Archie as Harper appears dressed up. He tries to tell her she looks great but she isn’t really listening. She says there’s heaps of milk in the fridge and leaves in the middle of Tane telling her to have a good time. At Salt, Harper chats to Drew about how she was worried people knowing about Archie would put them off. Drew says he has two pre-teens daughters and is told he’ll miss this stage when they’re teens. Harper briefly joins Eden at the bar to get more drinks, saying Drew’s nice, funny and cute.

Lacey asks David what changed. David says he still believes Jo did nothing wrong and she and Lacey weren’t meant to know he had the file. He doesn’t want her to see the file and have the images in her head. Jo comes home and storms off to her room at the sight of them. Lacey and David go to the Diner. David texts Jo to let her know where they are. Lacey suggests Jo has something to hide. David wishes she’d put herself in Jo’s shoes. Lacey wishes Jo could put herself in hers. Nearby, Marilyn drops by Roo’s table. Roo is struggling to write the letter, since she doesn’t want to tell Cohen how much she’s missing him but doesn’t want to lie either.

Tane is still looking after Archie when Eden turns up. She first claims she’s after the gossip about John before admitting she wants to check in on how he feels about looking after his baby while the mother’s with another man. Outside the surf club, Harper and Drew discuss how their exes are handling them dating again. Drew says he won’t tell his daughters until he meets someone special. He offers to walk her home but Harper declines. They hug goodbye and he says they’ll talk soon. After he’s gone, Harper rings Dana and gushes about how well it went.

Tane assures Eden that he’s not jealous but is worried that if Harper does find someone then there’ll be another man in Archie’s life and he’ll be less important. Eden says she doesn’t have the best relationship with her father but no-one could replace him. Harper arrives back and says it was fine before heading off to bed.

At the Diner, David and Lacey are still sat at a table. Roo tells Marilyn that she’s written two letters: One is what she really feels, which she will never send, and the other says everything that he needs to hear. Theo comes in and joins David and Lacey for dessert. David stresses the case hasn’t been reopened: He’s just checking to see if anything’s been missed and it’s not meant to be common knowledge. Theo agrees to drop it but Lacey says she’s wanted this for years and asks David to promise he’ll take action if he finds Jo is to blame.

David comes home to find Jo sat round the back of the house. He says he wishes she’d been at dinner and insists he still believes she wasn’t at fault. Jo is convinced there is a part of him that thinks she might be guilty and doesn’t believe his reassurances. Next morning, at the coffee cart, Harper is still raving to Eden about Drew. She gets a phone call from him and Eden convinces her to answer it before telling Leah that Harper’s had a date. Harper tells Drew she can be free tonight, apparently for a Korean barbecue.

David and Jo turn up at Salt where Lacey is waiting. Neither Lacey nor Jo is happy to see the other one there but David says there’s something he has to tell them both. He notes they were all going through hell at the time of the investigation, so he couldn’t bring himself to look at the case file and just waited for the final report, which means something may have been missed. He says he’s not taking either of their’s side, he’s realised they won’t be able to move forward as a family unless they work through it together. They both nod slightly.
