Extended Summary
Justin and David meet up outside the surf club with David explaining they need to get his stuff from storage. Theo comes along and they explain the move’s happening. David suggests Justin bring Leah along for a barbecue afterwards and also invites Theo, who agrees to ask Lacey to come. At the camp site, John is out in the open, nervously trying to attract attention. Tane and Mali emerge from their tents and say they both slept well. John asks if they heard any noises during the night but denies it when Tane asks if he was scared of the Hairy Man.
At the Diner, Leah and Theo discuss going to the barbecue. Leah encourages Theo to ask Lacey, who is sat nearby. Lacey suggests they go to the beach. Theo tells her about David’s invitation. As if he hasn’t spoken, Lacey suggests a beach picnic. When Theo presses it, she accuses him of going behind her back. Theo explains about Justin helping David move but Lacey still leaves.
At the beach house, Jo is singing along to music in her room and unpacking records, despite David pointing out they don’t have a record player. Justin comes in with another box and they tell Jo about the lunch. Justin hasn’t heard back from Theo as to whether Lacey is coming. David says Jo could invite some friends, suggesting Tane.
Tane gets Jo’s invite text. Mali reads it over his shoulder and asks if something’s going on, before musing about dating with Harper down the hall. Tane texts Jo back saying he’s camping, then says Harper’s gone on a date, denying being jealous. John is still keeping a fire going and Mali checks he didn’t scare him. John asks what happens if the Hairy Man comes. Mali says if he touches or scratches you or makes eye contact then you become a hairy man.
David and Jo put the last things together. Justin brings the last box in and says he’ll go and get changed. David starts dancing to some music before saying he’s brought something from the old place; a piece of wood he sawed off, on which Kristina made a note of the girls’ heights and her own. Jo wishes she was there.
Mali comes up behind John and gives him a scare. John suddenly announces he thinks they should go back, claiming he has a lot of surf club admin to do. Mali fills in Tane, noting that since John’s their transport, they have to go back too. After John’s out of earshot, Tane admits to Mali that he made the noises last night. Mali says the idea was to occupy John, not scare him, but Tane thinks he’s done that, since John’s thinking about the Hairy Man rather than Irene.
Theo arrives back at the Diner flat with a breakfast roll. Lacey claims not to be hungry, but when Theo threatens to eat it himself and raves about how great it is, she takes it, saying she’ll have it later. She suggests they go somewhere for lunch but Theo is going to go to the barbecue, saying he wants to get to know David and Jo because he likes her. Lacey isn’t impressed.
David and Jo are doing more unpacking and Jo says Tane’s busy. David goes upstairs to get changed. Jo opens a cupboard and finds the file. David comes back down looking for the box with his clothes in and sees her with the file, trying to claim it got mixed up with their stuff. Jo rushes off and locks herself in the bedroom.
John, Tane and Mali have nearly packed up. John suggests they stay for another night and he picks them up tomorrow. Tane says it’s a bit late for that and he’d like to see Archie anyway while Mali wants to check on the shop. John knows they brought him there to cheer him up and tells them he’s going to see Irene in a couple of weeks. They note the fire’s out and Mali and Tane both make joking noises at John before they leave.
Talking through the bedroom door, Jo asks David if he doesn’t believe her. David says he’s just checking to see if the investigation missed anything. Jo says she thought they were moving on from that. At the flat, Theo tries to encourage Lacey to come. She refuses, and also doesn’t have a message for David, but does hope he has a good time. Leah turns up, wanting Theo’s help with some platters, and asks if Lacey’s coming before saying they’ll bring back leftovers for her. Lacey says not to bother.
Justin, Leah and Theo turn up at the beach house and greet David. Theo says Lacey was busy. Jo walks towards the door without a word, saying she’s going anywhere that’s not there. At the surf club, Mali tries to convince Tane to spend time together to avoid work but Tane wants to get back to Archie. Jo turns up, wondering if Lacey’s working. She is surprised to see Tane. He says they came back from the camping early but Jo asks why everyone’s lying to her. Tane suggests they sit and talk.
Justin suggests to David that they do this another time when things are less tense. David suggests it’s strange for Leah being there. Theo notices the height chart and comments that Lacey’s always been a shrimp. John turns up with a bottle of wine from Wales. David still suggests firing up the barbie but the others decide against it. John says Irene would want a family in the house. He and Justin leave; Leah tells David they are a family but he says they don’t feel like it.
Outside the surf club, Jo tells Tane that she thinks David doesn’t believe her anymore. Tane asks what’s changed. Seeing Lacey approaching, Jo storms over to her and tells her David has reopened the investigation. Lacey insists she didn’t know anything about it. Jo asks how she talked him into it.
