Extended Summary

John and Tane run into each other outside their houses. Tane notes he’s just been looking for Perri on the beach, recalling how he used to sleep there. They see a police car approaching and Tane explains they’ve been coming round once a day to search the house and yard just in case he’s hiding Perri in a cupboard. He goes over and greets Rose and her colleague, guessing they want to come in.

At the garage, Theo is saying goodbye to a customer. After making sure the man has gone, he tells Perri, who has been hiding in the office, that he can come out. Theo doesn’t think this can go on: He’s kept Justin away for today but isn’t sure how much longer he can do it. Perri thinks he just needs to lie low until it dies down. Theo says that could take weeks or months, and with his picture all over the place, customers will recognise him. Perri thinks he can change his look and says he can’t go to jail.

At Salt, Harper is making a phone call while sitting with Dana. She says she’s spoken to Perri’s old teachers and classmates and people he was in juvie with but none of them really know him. Xander brings over some food for the three of them, saying he’s on his break. Dana takes Harper’s phone off her and insists she eat. Xander asks if Tane knows where Perri is. Harper snaps that of course he doesn’t before admitting she thought the same at first.

Back at the Newman house, Tane watches as Rose and her colleague make a fruitless search. Harper turns up and notes Rose is early today. Rose says there’s no point turning up at the same time every day. Tane says that if he was hiding Perri, which he isn’t, he wouldn’t hide him there. The police leave and Tane complains that they’re too busy looking for Perri in the wrong place.

Mali and Abigail are walking into work. Abigail says it’s the perfect job but changes her mind when Kirby turns up. Kirby comments on Abigail’s uniform and Abigail says she’s looking forward to some parts of the job more than others. Kirby heads off to do a lesson. Abigail confirms to Mali that she was lying when she said there’d be no more problems with Kirby but promises to play nice in working hours.

At the Diner, Rose sits with Theo and asks him about Perri. Theo downplays their friendship, saying they only hung out a couple of times, and can’t think of where he might be. He asks what will happen if Perri doesn’t turn up soon. Rose says that the longer he’s missing, the guiltier he looks.

Harper tells Tane she’s contacted Perri’s old social worker for a list of his old hangouts. Tane worries Perri’s in another state. He asks Harper how she is, saying he’ll always worry about her and their baby. Theo turns up and says he needs to ask Tane about the parts he ordered. Tane goes along with it until Harper leaves then asks what it was about. Theo says he knows where Perri is. Tane says to take him to him. Perri hides when Tane and Theo turn up at the garage. Tane calls out, saying he knows Perri’s there. Perri is upset with Theo but Tane says Theo did the right thing and asks to speak to Perri alone.

At the Diner, Harper examines the Wanted poster of Perri and comments to Dana that if she saw it then she’d carry on running as well. She suddenly feels the baby kicking for the first time. Despite her warning about boundaries, Dana insists on having a feel and tells Harper that this is why they have to look after her.

At the surf club, John approaches Mali and Abigail, noting the latter is working there now. Mali says he’s already sorted out the paperwork. John gives Abigail the surf club handbook, saying there’ll be a pop quiz on it later. Kirby returns and Abigail tries to make polite conversation with her. Kirby wants to sort through their issues, reminding her of the story she told Mack and saying teenagers don’t always make the best decisions. Abigail is unimpressed and walks off.

At the police station, Rose retrieves a printout. Harper turns up and tries to suggest that Rose needs to broaden the search. However, Rose is more focused on the printout, which is the autopsy report. She explains that it showed water in Carl’s lungs, meaning he was alive when he went into the pool and drowned, meaning Perri could have saved him and didn’t. She has to pass the news on to Homicide.

Tane tries to convince Perri to turn himself in. Perri says the police couldn’t put Carl away or keep him away from him. Tane reminds Perri he joined his course because he wanted to make a decision about what sort of man he was going to be: He didn’t have a choice over what happened to Carl but he does now. Tane walks away, saying the choice is Perri’s.

Abigail is sat on the beach. Mali joins her, saying she can either study the handbook or talk to him, and she gestures for him to sit down. Mali wonders why she’s still holding a grudge over a missed birthday party. Abigail says it was her first birthday since her dad and Levi left and she only had her mum and Eden, then Eden met Remi and Kirby and joined the band and suddenly she wasn’t there anymore either. Mali points out that was Eden’s decision and Abigail’s forgiven her, suggesting it’s easier to blame Remi and Kirby than her.

Outside the surf club, Dana approaches John and asks if she can do fewer shifts on next week’s patrols. John asks what’s more important than saving lives but relents when she says she wants to keep an eye on Harper. Mali and Abigail approach where Kirby is finishing off her lunch. Kirby says she’s going to do some stock orders. Abigail asks to do them with her and she agrees.

Harper arrives at the Newman house and tells Tane about Rose’s new information and that they can only go on the evidence without talking to Perri. Tane worries he’s made a mistake but a moment later Perri turns up and announces he knows what kind of man he wants to be. Tane and Harper take him to the police station where Rose is pleased when he says he’s stopped running and explains he’s under arrest. He is taken to have his fingerprints and mug shots taken while Tane and Harper wait. Tane tries to tell him it’ll be okay but he doesn’t look convinced. Rose takes him to a cell, explaining he’ll be kept there until a magistrate decides on bail. He is left alone.
