John’s absence is felt at the Surf Club. The Fowler siblings clash. Bree dreams big for her future.
Extended Summary
John is sitting in a deckchair on the beach, reading. Alf pulls up in the surf club buggy and complains about having to put the flags out himself and John not responding to his messages. John says there’s nothing to discuss and points to some teenagers swimming near a rip. Dana hurries up and wonders what happened to the bronze medallion class, since she didn’t read her e-mail. Alf says it’s cancelled until they get a new teacher. Dana asks John what happened to him and he replies that he quit.
At the hospital, Bree checks on Mackenzie who says she actually got a few hours’ sleep and gives the credit to Levi. She confirms that she likes that he takes his time with you. Not too far away, Levi is chatting with Eden, saying he didn’t know she was in the area. Eden sarcastically says she’s moved since they last met but admits she came looking for him and that Remi saw him. Levi suggests they go for a walk.
At the Diner, Marilyn chats to Alf about spending time with Jett then notes Alf wasn’t there when she got in or this morning, wondering if he’s been fishing. Alf says he doesn’t have time for fishing: He was at the bait shop until late because he was held up at the surf club. They chat about John. Marilyn tracks John down to Salt and, after a brief exchange of pleasantries, tries to chat to him about him quitting. John insists he’s standing up for his principles. Marilyn wants to talk further but John says he’s reading the paper. Marilyn gets him to hand her the horoscope. Nearby, Cash and Remi chat about Eden meeting Levi. Remi isn’t convinced it will go well.
Eden and Levi walk in a park area, making awkward chit-chat. Levi asks what she’s been up to and Eden asks if he means today, this week or the last few years. She refers to him as an arrogant brat and he reminds her she’s ignored all his invites. Eden indicates she didn’t want to see their dad. Levi says he thought about calling her and Eden admits she wouldn’t have picked up.
At the surf club, Alf is struggling to deal with a delivery and answer the telephone. John and Marilyn come down but John refuses to help out and watches as Marilyn tries to help with the delivery. Dana comes in and asks about the bronze medallion class. Alf points to a sign on the board, which simply says it’s cancelled until further notice. John leaves, telling Marilyn there’s another two big deliveries due in today.
Eden and Levi continue their walk near the beach. Levi tries to talk about specialising. Eden sarcastically says he’s not the loser black sheep but softens slightly when he says he downloaded Lyrik’s album after their mum told him about it and plays it in the theatre. However, when he mentions their dad, Eden has a go at him for taking their dad’s side. Levi insists he’s the only one that didn’t take sides. Eden asks if he’d make the same choice again. He looks awkward and she walks away.
At the hospital, Bree runs into Dana, who was called in by the agency after her class got cancelled. Bree asks about Levi and Dana says he had a good reputation at their old hospital for being good with patients and also worked for Doctors Without Borders. Bree approaches Levi, saying she’s heard both about his work and about him being Eden’s brother, and noting it’s a small hospital and a small town.
Eden arrives at the Newman house complaining about Levi and tells Cash it’s his fault for pushing her. She says Levi blames her for not being able to let go. Cash agrees she can hold a grudge and says his life is better for having Felicity in it. At the Diner, Bree tells Remi that Levi has inspired her about travelling and helping people. Alf comes in and asks after Mackenzie. Marilyn gives him his order and they briefly discuss the club, John watches from a nearby table and tells Marilyn it’s nothing to do with him. Marilyn suggests the complaint may have had some truth and his teaching skills need work.
Cash has visited Mackenzie in hospital, although she’s puzzled he keeps looking around for someone. She asks about Felicity and regrets kicking her out. Levi comes in and Mackenzie introduces him and Cash to each other. Cash says a sudden goodbye to Mackenzie before following Levi out, explaining he’s Eden’s boyfriend and suggesting they go for a beer. Down on the beach, Alf is directing swimmers while John watches from a distance. Dana approaches John and asks if he misses it. She regrets that he’s not teaching the classes anymore and John suggests they talk over how he did.
Cash and Levi chat at the bar at Salt. Levi says he tried to put what his dad did aside and view it as nothing to do with him. Eden comes in and reacts to them with horror. Downstairs, Remi and Bree arrive with Bree discussing wanting to travel and do charity work, saying she’s only ever been to Fiji. They see Cash and Eden come downstairs arguing, with Eden telling Cash to stop helping. Bree tells Remi to follow Eden and he suggests they go to a gig in Reefton Lakes. Levi also comes down and says his goodbyes to Cash and Bree.
John asks Dana how it felt being one of his students and if he was a bully. Dana carefully says she understands the need for resilience when lives are on the line. John says he needs to weed out the ones who won’t take it seriously. Dana does however say he could have been tactful and people could take things he said the wrong way. John tells her about Banjo and being banned from teaching before leaving. Marilyn asks Dana if he’s all right; she doesn’t think so.
Marilyn and Dana go to the surf club to talk to Alf. They think John cares a lot about teaching and should be given another chance. Alf says even if John got his job back, he wouldn’t be allowed to teach, and explains about Simon Henderson being a sponsor. Dana asks if the committee would be forced to reconsider if the complaint was withdrawn; she and Banjo swapped numbers so she’s going to talk to him.
Up in Salt, Cash and Bree discuss the situation with Eden and Levi. Bree mentions how he’s inspired her. Cash gets a call from Felicity and tells her he’ll be right there. He explains to Bree that they’ve been evicted.
